Re-member-ing Making time Taking part Participating in extra-curricular often took two basic things: a photographic memory and plenty of gas. Getting involved could be fun. but it also meant extra work and sometimes a lack of sleep. The hardest part was remembering which dub did which activity on which day.' commented Stact Jones (12). Sports, dubs, and organizations all did their part in making sure that teenagers' busy schedules were filled to the hilt. Being a member also meant paying your dues, either in terms of money, time, or both. “Some- times I wondered if all of those fund-raising pro- jects were really worth it. commented Steven Le- Vay (11). Teenagers were always needing money for one rea son or another. Taking your boy gir! fnend out to the show cost $4.75 per per- son. and this didn't include snacks. Some teenagers held part-time iobs to get money. Most begged mom and dad when times were hard. Shopping wasn't an absolute necessity, but practically everyone loved to get something new. The clothes ranged from cheap to expensive, but the in clothes were usually the most expensive. “Going to school dances are fun and expensive, if you don't have $2.00,' claims Tammy Fuller (11). Prom was another matter entirely. The girls had to buy a dress, purse, shoes, and a bouton- niere The guys had to buy a suit (or rent a tux), shoes, a corsage, dinner, and a way to get there. Commenting on gas expenses Amy Yankoviak (12) said. My tank is always sitting on empty because I only put in a couple of dollars worth at a time.
