San Jacinto Shines Every town has a big power to draw people to the city. And Baytown also has its bright spots. Yes. Hous- ton may have the Astrodome, but Baytown has the San Jacinto Mall. Like a big magnet “The Mall pulls people from all around to help stimulate the Baytown economy. Along with the new Mall built on the corner of Garth Rd. and I-10 many businesses and stores packed up and moved either into the mall or some- where near the mall. The mall brought more jobs for the people of Bay- town. Highlands, Barbers Hill, and Crosby. Many stu- dents can be seen at any given time after school or on the weekends working somewhere in the mall. The mall helped put money back in students' pockets now that they can work year round. The employers try to help work-out a work schedule for their employees who were attending school. Along with new jobs the mall also created a new place to go on the weekends. The mall contains a store to please the taste of every individual who en- ters. It contains a game room, roller skating rink, and six theatres. If these types of stores do not appeal to you. then there are plenty of other stores to shop around in. Like a star radiating energy, the mall sends out its special energy to cover the Baytown area. It has changed the way of life for many people. There were many new jobs created, a new source of entertain- ment, and revival of the life of shoppers in Baytown. The San Jacinto Mall has become the new generator of energy for the Baytown area. Rondo Weems. Daria Carlisle. Tracey Roger . Texas Avenue Radiates Every town has a main attraction and Baytown is no exception. Houston may have the Astrodome, but Baytown has Texas Avenue. People from all around come to cruise” the street known as the the Snake.” Texas Avenue has become the place to go on the weekend. The Snake is becoming known as one of the biggest hangouts of teens in Baytown. In 1975 the street took on a new appearance. The long straight features were changed into curves that resembled a snake. The street was no longer used for drag racing, but it was now a place to cruise.” The change was made to cut out the drag racing, and also to try to beautify a deteriorating downtown area. As the popularity of the street mounted so did the problems. People would come to Baytown to drink and drive down Texas. The city saw a need to curb unwanted activity and enacted strict no drinking poli- cies. Long lines waiting to get on the street and many traffic accidents prompted police to close the street at times and they also allowed no parking on Texas between the hours of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Texas Avenue holds many great stories to tell and helps to add many hours of excitement to the lives of teens from Baytown and wherever else they may be from. Who knows someday Texas Avenue may be- come as famous as Westheimer in Houston. Andy Mixon Mama Noma. Bred In- gram share lunch tune together. Texas Ave a place where many spend weekends 4
