Bicentennial Parents Night 156 Make me more beautiful says Mrs. Edwards. ' M were abort BAYTOWN :ek schools SCHOOL BOS Robert E. Lee has always had a fine group of ath- letes representing the Ganders. REL's athletic records can attest to that. The Class of '76 was no different, as two star-spangled athletic careers came to an end. These two persons were just a small part of a large contingent which carried the Lee banner in all athletic events, but they were the best, and they are the co-recipients of the annual Gander Gazette Athlete of the Year Award. In the past, only one award was given. However, since girls’ athletics have come on the scene, two were awarded — one to Ann Girar- deau and the other to Freddy Bradshaw. While the two finished at the top in their athletic endeavors, the pair was also outstanding in the classroom. Girardeau finished No. 2 in the Class of '76; Bradshaw No. 9. Girardeau’s second-place finish in the Sr. class rankings may be her lowest finish in 1976. as she was nothing but No. 1 in the pool. Ann completed recently, the most brilliant career of any female athlete, any swimmer and maybe any athlete in REL history. A four-year let- terwinner. Ann was the high scorer of the team all four years, racking up 1,495 points in four years. And Lee has not lost a dual or triangular swim meet since Girardeau has been at REL. Winner of the swim team’s MVP award, the Armstrong-Rice Award, in 1974-75. Girardeau had her best year that season, making 504 points. But Ann's excellence was not limited to the team. For instance, there are 10 events in swim meets (not including diving). At the Lee pool. Ann either holds individually or is part of a relay which holds the pool record in seven of those events. Girardeau holds the District 20-AAAA records in four events — the 200 free, the 200 individ- ual medley, the 100 free and the 100 back. Ann has qualified to go to the state swim meet all four years — the first Lee swimmer to perform this feat. Girardeau has swum in four events nine times in state competition. In those state performances. Ann has been all state three years, an honor only bestowed for the last three years. Though the National Honor Society, of which Freddy Bradshaw is the Robert E. Lee chapter president, is made up of those academically out- standing. Bradshaw would belong in any honor group for athletics as well. The three-year football letterman and four-year track letterwinner has had quite a career at Lee. Where Freddy was most prominent, though not always the most prolific, was in football, where he was a standout defensive back. Bradshaw lettered his sophomore year, seeing only lim- ited action due to a broken arm. Freddy started at defensive back his jun- ior year after an early-season broken ankle, and made the District 20- AAAA second all-district squad. The tri-captain received all-district honors for that season, as well as the James Gay award for best football player in academics and the Dan Stallworth award for the outstanding back. Unfortunately, head coach Ron Kramer and track mentor Gene Bosse must now find a replacement for Bradshaw. Freddy was just a tremendous athlete for our program. Kramer said. His play was always good, as was his leadership. He was very dependable to our program. He just didn’t miss. He’s just an outstanding athlete. Bradshaw's biggest asset is that he is a great competitor. Bosse said. He wants to win. and he works well to achieve that. ANN GIRARDEAU To qualify for all-state, one must be in the state's top five. And that’s not all. For three years, there have been All-American honors handed out. Annual Gander Gazette Award. . . Girardeau and Bradshaw Cop Athlete of the Year Awards And, for three years, Girardeau has been under consideration for that honor. Ann was on the 400 free ralay team under consideration her soph- omore and junior years, and has been under consideration for All-Ameri- can honors in the 100 free for all three years. According to swim coach Kathryn Wright. Ann’s lifetime best of 1:02.0 in the 100 back makes her a cinch for All-American honors this season. The All-American team will be announced this summer. What is more remarkable about Girardeau is that she swam what Coach Wright needed for the team, whether or not it was her best event. At one time or another during her high school | career, she swam in every event. Wright said. She swam whatever I needed her to swim when I needed it for the team, even though many times, it wasn’t what she wanted to swim.” FREDDY BRADSHAW Freddy was no slouch in track, either. In his four-year career. Bradshaw's versatility showed. At one time or another. Bradshaw ran the mile relay, the 440-yard relay, the 880 relay, the sprint and distance medley relays, the open quarter and the 220. Bradshaw’s specialty was the 440. where he had a best of 47.72 in the regional meet this year during which he placed fourth. Freddy won the loop crown in the event his junior and senior years. Freddy has timed faster in a relay, however. In the Ganders’ record sprint medley relay at the Baytown Relays. Bradshaw turned a 47.3 lap as REL put together the nation's fifth fastest time in high school competi- tion. Bradshaw was on the district champion mile relay his sophomore and junior seasons and part of the loop titlists in the sprint relay his sophomore and senior years. If Bradshaw continues at this pace. UT football coach Darrell Royal and track coach Cleburn Price will have something to talk about by 1979-80. 159 160 Reporter: Larry Malloy 161 THE FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA is a National Organization sol up to improver the qual- ity of Agriculture through youth and leadership. Instead of the usual maroon and white, red, white and blue deco- rated the halls and stage. Teachers and students alike were encouraged to dress patriotically and all of the exhibits had historical themes. Why? The Bicenten- nial, of course. Dr. Horatio (Melanie Moskowitz) and lady friend (Darlene Perio) attend assembly. Besides the assembly there were many exhibits — such as this one of Boston Harbor. Awards were presented to Micky Thompson. Mike Eskew. and David Clark. A Bicentennial tea was prepared and served by the Homemaking department. 236 Flags made into rugs by crafts classes, totem poles, a model of Boston Harbor, papers on ‘‘What America-Means to Me,” a talking Thomas Jefferson, and a medicine man show all added up to a big night and lots of headaches for teachers and students. Was it all worth it? The Liberty Bell cracks again in this lifesize model made by Sine- Waves. To increase attendance, students were awarded an extra exemption day if they had their parents come to the exhibits and assembly. 237 Among the presentations was this flag presented to Mrs. York Decorations for the tables in the commons and on the stage were for the History and Gov’t departments. made by the Brig. I Ze want to brighten your future! Baytown, Texas Another year, anothei What does it mean? A Better. . . Worse . unchanged. . .? 334 f grade — I re we older. . . different. . . Or do we remain What is passed? What is still to come? Everything — Anything? 335 As I look back on the past four years I have spent at Lee. I cannot help but have a great feeling inside . . . I have met so many great friends and teachers: and although it has been work, it has also been a lot of fun. I have learned and experienced: I have enjoyed; I have had good times and bad times, but mostly I have matured. These years have been the greatest four years of my life, and I will always treasure them as long as I live. For all of the underclassmen: 1 hope you will enjoy and get as much out of High School as I did. Just do not rush things, take your time and enjoy them while they are there. And for all of the Seniors: 1 just say that there is a bright new future waiting for us but ivehave to make the best out of it. A new day is dawning: we must open our eyes to the world around us. The easy part is over, it is now up to us to mature and make our own decisions. Good Luck to everyone and 1 hope you will enjoy this edition of the LEE TRA VELER. « 336 In Memory Elaine White dedicated heir life . . .
