The Lee Traveler Robert E. Lee High School Baytown, Texas Volume 44 With deep appreciation the Traveler staff proudly dedicates this 1974 Lee T raveler to MR. WILLIAM BRENTZEL whose devotion, loyalty, and contributions to Robert E. Lee exemplify EXCELLENCE Contents Excellence abounds at Robert E. Lee It was exemplified by the superior achievements of many at REL during the '73-'74 school year. Some who achieved Excellence are shown on these pages. Excellence in scholastic work Anne Rice was a National Merit Scholar. Alan Elliott and Lowell Crow were National Merit Finalists. 6 Excellence in literary events Debra Martinez won the National Council of Teachers of English Award. Her sponsor was Mrs. Natalie Huckabee. This was the fifteenth consecutive year that a student from REL has won the award. Excellence is achieved by those who choose to excel Willie Moreno. Alan Elliott. Paul Putman. Mike Thomas, and Terry Adcock appeared on TV on the Prep Bowl — a tribute to scholastic ability found at REL. 7 Excellence in vocational training Cosmetology students took numerous firsts in State and District competition. FRONT ROW. left to right: Esmeralda Martinez. Sherill Hunter. Martha Cortez. BACK ROW. from left. Rhonda Sims. Cynthia Landry. Lynda Lynch. Denise Cook. Sharon Hodges. Yolanda Rocha. Mary Paschal. Excellence is earned, not given Joe Paul Mayo, right, and Kirk Warren won first and second in the State in Auto Mechanics. 8 Excellence in music Reggie Pittman was an All-State Choir member The price of Excellence is high; it can be purchased only with desire and effort All-State band members were Sherry Strickler, Christy Harris, Kyle Schultz, and Kathi Hayden. 9 Excellence The Ganders were District 20-4A Champs in track. At right. Track- Star Daniel Stagg is presented the Rockhold Award by Coach Gene Bosse at the Spring Sports Ban- quet. Superior achievements result from superior efforts This sign tells the story: the Ganders again excelled in football, and were District Co-Champs in 73. el nHMPS 562 (,)nttTa UovTo Go! Coach Ron Kramer was presented the Baytown Sun's Coach of the Year award, and Ernest Salazar was named to the All-State team and received the Sun's Player of the Year award. Sun Managing Editor Jim Finley, center, made the presentations. 10 in sports These four members of the Girl’s Swim Team — Anne Rice, Elizabeth Rice, Mary Kathleen Peirce, and Ann Girardeau — advanced to State in swim competition where they placed fifth. Each girl was named All-State for 1974. Anne Rice was the first student in REL history to advance to State in any sport for four con- secutive years. Once Excellence is achieved, continuous efforts are required to maintain it n Excellence in language arts Displaying winners trophies for Regional and State championships in Latin Decathlon events are Lowell Crow. Cathy Combs, and Alan Elliott. Wisdom excellet h folly as far as light excelleth darkness. ’ Ecclesiastes 2:13 Junior Classical League members who helped bring Regional honors in Latin to REL this year were Kathy Harper, front, and standing, left to right. Instructor Miss Mary Jane Bickley. Lowell Crow. Marla Dug- ger. Alan Elliott. Georgianne Spiller, Billy Rahlwes. Sandy Druce. Denly Murph, Barbara Westbrook, Marvin Wesselhoft. and Cathy Combs. 12 Excellence in precision REL’s famous marching groups — the Brig- adiers and the Band — made history this year by combining in a drill at a home foot- ball game. Brigadier Directors Mrs. Sally Black and Mrs. Jackie Scott watch a drill at left. Band Directors Charles Forque and Randy Fitch are at right. These were just some of the achievements of Excellence at REL this year. There were many more, by students at a school which exemplifies superiority in many ways. Because of the many ways the Ganders demonstrate Excellence, it is evident that REL IS ALIVE AND WELL! 13 15 School A dministration Superintendent of Schools Johnny Clark, Jr. 1973-1974 President of Texas State Teachers Association SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS SEATED.
