Our highest card, our ace, is the human re- lationships we have experienced here, so the peo- ple of Robert E. Lee High School, all of them, are represented by the “Ace of Ganders.” . . . As did the Greeks long before us, so. too, do we extol a sound mind in a sound body. ' Because we be- lieve that no school excels our own with is wide- ranging athletic and physical education program, we have for our next high card the 'King of s.‘ ... The Queen represents our Person- alities; her crown symbolizes the special high hon- ors which have come to many Lee students who have excelled in various areas of our curricular and extracurricular activities . . . The “Jack of Clt Organizations is shown with the to that symbolizes organization . . The Joker, traditionally a wild card with manv values that many parts, represents Business. Industry, Proiessions—the adult community from which we have received so many things and of which we will soon become a part. Truly, we have been 'dealt high cards” as stu- dents at Robert E. Lee. Foreword In a manner of speaking, each of us is “dealt a hand ol cards bv Life. As we are born, grow up. and mature, we each acquire certain basic fun- damentals of civilized humanity—values, charac- ter, education, and much more. We feel that the cards dealt us during our years here have been high ones. Ganders post 6-4 record The Robert E. Lee Fighting Ganders went on to post a 6-4 record this year after dropping their first two games to Spring Branch 13-0 and to Port Arthur 12-0. Despite these two shutouts, the Ganders rallied hack to beat Port Neches 10-6, Corpus Christi Ray 14-6, and Beaumont South Park 18-7. The Ganders dropped their district opener to Texas City 17-14 before a home crowd, but made up for that loss by shutting out the then Number 1 team in the state. Galena Park, 24-0. The next week they stopped Brazosport 14-6. Before a small home- coming crowd, who watched the game in a drench- ing rain, the Ganders managed to stay in the run- ning for the district crown by edging Galveston Ball High 2-0 on a safety in the last 30 seconds of the game. The Ganders then met undefeated Pasa- dena for the district title, but were dropped 25 14. The finalists were selected from among 26 en- tries. Each Contestant entered two pictures, one full-length and one close-up. to be judged. The Relay Queen was to be chosen by Larry Kane, from the Larry Kane T.V. Show. The annual Lee Relays were held March 21, at Memorial Stadium. 190 CAROL WILLIAMS Simonetta Pozzi was Exchange Student Our Foreign Exchange Student this year was Miss Simonetta Pozzi. Simonetta is from Florence. Italy. She returns there after this year to pursue her studies toward becoming an interpreter. Tin's marks the second year of participation in the Foreign Exchange Program for Lee. Sponsored by the American Field Service, the Exchange Program here is coordinated by the Student Council. Many of the Council’s activities help to raise funds for the program. Simonetta hopes to be an interpreter; at Lee she studied English. Russian, and Spanish. Simonetta’s studies often required library research. The personal friendships made through the For- eign Exchange Program heighten international good will. Who’s PAT HUDNALL began her days at Lee as a sopho- more class officer, and has been one of the busiest stu- dents here ever since. This year she is president of the Keyettes, serves on the Student Council and as a delegate to the Good Sportsmanship League, is a member of the R. B. Sparks FTA, and is a Lee Brigadier. Pat was a duchess in the King and Queen Assembly during her junior year and a favorite of her class both last year and the year before. ROBERT MYLER has brought distinction to himself and to Lee through his scholarship. He is the only National Merit Scholarship finalist from REL this year. A member of the National Honor Society and the Science Seminar, Robert does not confine his interests to things of purely academic nature: he also is a veteran band member and this year was selected for a position in the Lee Symphonic Band. DAVID BARNES has distinguished himself by service to his school and his classmates for a period of time which reaches back beyond his high-school years. He was chosen to represent Lee at Boys’ State last summer, and has worked hard as manager of the Gander basketball squad. This year David has given much time and effort to his job as president of the History Club, one of Lee's oldest, largest, and most active organizations. CONNIE THOMAS is a former vice-president and current president of the Anchor club. A three-year mem- ber of the Brigadiers, this year she was Lieutenant of the Flags. Connie is the Student Council historian; she is devotional leader of the R. B. Sparks FTA, and district recording secretary for the future teachers. Connie worked in the JCL for two years, at which time she was a member of |he National Latin Honor Society. 193 JENEFRED HEDERHORST’S seemingly unlimited energy and dedicated ability have served REL since she entered its halls as a sophomore. She was drum major of the Sophomore Band, and this year is drum major of the Junior-Senior Band. As a delegate to Girls’ State, she won election as lieutenant governor: and this year she has served as a Kevette officer. A class favorite the past two years. Jenefred is also a three-year Student Council member, and is president of the District 12-IA Good Sportsmanship League. MIKE FERRELL’S hard work on the football field has paced the Ganders to many victories. A three-year letterman. Mike was tri-captain of the squad this year and has received state-wide recognition. Mike was chosen for both the offensive and defensive line-up of the 1963 All-District Teams named by the District Coaches, the Houston Post, and the Houston Chronicle. Off the field. Mike has worked hard as a member of the Key Club. Who’s 194 FRANK TERRY is a student Lee can be proud of. He was selected for Boys’ State and has been a vigorous president of the Key Club this year. He has also contributed much to the work of the American Field Service Committee, of which he is a member. Frank is on the Lee track team, and has lettered three years in the tackle slot on the football team. He was a tri-captain of the 1963 Cander gridders. Who SARA GRIFFIN'S contributions to REL have been evident in mam activities. I.ast year, she edited the Gander Gazette and was active in the Junior Classical League, and was elected to membership in the National Latin Honor Society. This year. Sara is the Lee Traveler’s editor-in-chief and is president of the R. B. Sparks FTA. On the Student Council. Sara has served as reporter, dele- gate to the Good Sportsmanship League, and as delegate to the Southern Association of Student Councils Conven- tion. 195 Who’s RAYMOND CAMPBELL has done a great deal to help make the Robert E. Lee Band not only the nation's largest marching band, but one of the best in the country, too. President of the I-ee Band, lie also has been selected for membership in the Houston City Symphonic Band and has been named to the All-District Band. This year, too. Raymond is president of the INTERACT Club. ANN LEESEMANN is perhaps best known as com- pany commander of the Lee Brigadiers, but her worthy activities do not stop there. She also is president of the Junior Rotary Anns, a very active sendee group. Ann previously was parliamentarian for and this year is vice-president of the R. B. Sparks FTA. 196 HERSCHEL ROSSER is president of the Baytown Junior Optimist Chapter of the National Forensic League: last year he was that group’s historian. He is also in the Humanities Seminar and is parliamentarian for the National Honor Society at Lee. Herschel has belonged to the Alpha Beta Gamma chapter of the Junior Engineer- ing Technical Society, was president of the TRICO Junior Achievement group during his junior year, and served as a delegate to Boys’ State in 1963. DAN N't DuBOSE, president of the student body, is a two-year Gander football letterman. He also has been a delegate to Boys’ State, a class favorite, a duke of the King and Queen Assembly during his junior year, and is a member of INTERACT Club. As a scholar. Danny ranks high, and this year serves as second vice-president of the Lee chapter of the National Honor Society. 197 198 ORGANIZATIONS 199 ; - V Charm and Talent Are the Southern Belles’Key Note Belle Officers Donna Toups, president and a Relay Queen candi- date, stands beside a copy of the theme song. We thank you especially for the blessing of music which expresses the joys and the sorrows of the world. We pray that you would bless our performances. When we sing sacred music, we pray that those in our audience will be drawn to a better knowledge and closer walk with God. We pray that when we sing secular music, their hearts will be lifted and entertained so that they may forget, if only momentarily, their own problems and problems of the world. We pray that you would help us to do well, not only for the joy of knowing a job well done, but that our audiences may be inspired to look up. These blessings we ask, and we will thank you for them, for we pray in the name of our Saviour, Amen. Director Mary Gucmple leads the girls as accompanist Martha Gopffarth plays.
