Dedication The greatest privilege which we as a staff have is being able to dedicate our year's work to some person or persons whom we feel have contributed most to the suc- cess of the school year. We, the staff of the Lee Traveler, dedicate the 1963 edition of your year- book to Chris Sander and Gracie Adran, Robert E. Lee High School's first foreign exchange students. They have truly made the year complete. From their arrival in Baytown during the summer, Robert E. Lee students have learned and profited from these students from abroad. The student Council deserves all of our praise for enriching our school by enter- ing it in the American Field Serv- ice foreign exchange student pro- gram. Gracie Adran, from Argentina, is staying with the family of Dr. and Mrs. Malcom E. Hunter, par- ents of Anne Hunter. With her ready wit and intense interest in everyone, Gracie has become everyone's friend. Chris Sander of Germany has become a mem- ber of the family of Dr. and Mrs. J. L. Franklin, parents of Kirk and Jamie Franklin. Chris has earned respect and friendship with his vitality and intellect. The year 1963 will always be remembered by students as the first year that Lee participated in the American Field Service program. But personally, each student who knows Gracie and Chris will remember two of the most gracious and wonderful people who ever attended Robert E. Lee High School—our first foreign exchange students. 6 Chri and Gracie with their American brothers and sisters.

J. c. JAKE” BURKETT IN ME The excellent equipment and fine facilities with which we are blessed in the instrumental music department of our school system are the direct result of devotion and many unpaid hours of hard work by one man—J. C. Jake” Burkett. His heart was full of love and energy for his bands who marched in Chicago, Jackson, Mis- sissippi, and the Cotton Bowl. Every football game, parade, and concert were equally important to him. Former students who are scattered throughout our nation today are better citizens as a result of having been under the influence of this dedicated man. Mr. Burkett's dedication went beyond his bands and the music program. He was loyal to his church, many civic organizations of our community, and to his home. We in Baytown shall remember him most when we see or think of the Robert E. Lee Band. The tradition, pride, spirit, and perfection the Lee Band displayed in their performances were the direct result of his devotion and desire for his students to excel in all phases of their band work. His presence will be felt in our instrumental program for many years to come. 8
