I'.ditnr Munttjser U! risor 2 Tills year was a first for the change in design of our senior rings. On one side there is a flying Gan- der with 1962 above it. Below is ‘‘Gander” written within a chevron. In the left hand comer is a winged foot—the symbol of athletics. The right hand corner has a scroll and quill—the symbol of education. The reverse side has the bust of Robert E. Lee with 1962 written above it. Again, we find a chevron with R. E. Lee written in it. The right hand corner has the atomic symbol for the atomic age. The left corner has a pallet board symbol- izing the art division. Around the base, above the garnet setting, is written Robert E. Lee. Below the base is Baytown, Texas. The 1962 senior class is the first to wear the newly-designed ring. They are a symbol of our accomplishment of one phase of our education, and a symbol of our readiness to face a new world of hopes, dreams, and accomplishments. May we always wear them with pride and humility. 3 or a journey through As We Present to The 1962 Lee Trav Foreword . . . Here is your book. Long hours have been spent in trying to make it a memorial that you will treasure all your life. We hope we have been successful in catching and holding a few of the memories of your days at Robert E. Lee High School. Not only have we tried to show our extra- curricular activities, such as dances, sports, elections, assemblies, and clubs, but we have tried to show our curricular activities through our classes. We have also added a new “fine arts” section to our book. At the present these activities arfj so fresh ami vivid in our minds that we can hardly think of them as memories, but as the years go by we sincerely hope that this book will be of great help to you as you desire to recall the days you spent in Robert E. Lee High School as “moments to remember.” We hope you enjoy the 1962 Lee Traveler as much as we enjoyed publishing it. It was ours for almost a year. Now it belongs to you. THE STAFF 7 Dedication During our high school years there have been many people who have contributed unselfishly of their time and energy to prepare us to take our place among the citizens of this world. The 1962 LEE TRAVELER staff believes that no one, however, has been more generously devoted to her profession, her friends, or God than MISS EULA POTTER, dean of girls. In return for the priceless gifts of knowledge and inspiration which she has bestowed upon us, we dedicate to her this book. Many lives have been touched and molded to better citizenship, respect, and honor by her years of devoted service to the Student Council of Robert E. Lee High School. Throughout the district, state, and national organizations she is respected as an authority and veteran of Student Council work. In 1950, Miss Potter became dean of girls at REL, and in this position has given wise counsel, assistance, and encouragement to all those young women who would come her way. It is she who quietly performs for us the many kindnesses about which we never learn. To you, Miss Potter, we deeply express our gratitude for your years of devoted service to the young people of our community, and realize that those of us who have not had the opportunity to know you closely have perhaps missed one of life’s greatest blessings. It is with pride that we call you “our friend!” 8 A show of appreciation goes to Miss Eula Potter 9 I TIES Mr. Robert E. FINE AR TS Art fulfills aesthetic desire, These masterpieces uf student art were only some of the many judged for the Easter Contest. One of the many services that the art department con- tributes to our school is helping promote school spirit through posters and signs for athletics. Along with painting and drawing, the art stu- dents gain experience in such things as sculpture. serves practical purpose Abstract art allows the artist to express his emotion through various designs. “I can’t draw a straight line” is a common saying among people who wish to express their art disability. Students at R. E. Lee certainly learn more than just how to draw a straight line. Face portraits done in pencil work is among the activities of the art class. 41 R.E.L. drama department presents CAST Liliom. a carousel barker, is admired by all the girls . .. in order of appearance Julie Mrs. Muskat Julie Triche “Liliom” Serrant Girls Elaine Carrol, Frances Bryan, Linda Lewis Poliecmcn Bob Guill and Kenneth Meadows Mother Hollander Gail Sheffield Linzman Kenneth Meadows Ficsur IVolj Beifield First Policeman Second Policeman Doctor First Policeman of Beyond Donald Magill Second Policeman of Beyond Richly Dressed Man Jerry Standard Richard liohhs Poorly Dressed Man Stan Toups Old Guard Magistrate Louise Shirlev Hunter Townspeople Earl Wilburn. Back row: Carolyn Herman, Treasurer; Patsy Richmond, Second Soprano Chairman; Linda Lyon, Secretary; Ann Rose, President. The Southern Belles of Robert E. Lee High School sang American music exclusively this year, using the first American song through contemporary music of movie and Broadway composers, and including music of Stephen Foster and the early American hymn writers. Featured in their concerts were flutists Sharon Martin and Virginia Bethea and accompanist Judy Smith. The Southern Belles trio consisted of Judy Williams. Dianne Fulmer, and Barbara Morgan. An important project of the year was the making of a recording of the school song for non-profit distribution among loyal Robert E. Lee High School students and fans. Five hundred copies were made and sold. This recording is used on KWBA before broadcasts of Lee basketball games. The organization's schedule of concerts included an assembly for the high school, programs for the St. James House and the Cerebral Palsy Center, a full-scale spring concert, and assembly pro- grams in each of the four junoir high schools. The most spectacular performance was a Christmas concert during the holiday season on the golden stairway at the Citizens’ National Bank. Social events for the group included a beatnik party and movie line party during the fall term and a dinner dance at the Goose Creek Country Club in the spring. 49 FIRST SOPRANOS Junic Clinton Marcy Gallatin Kathy Head Carolyn Herman Becky Hollis Jo Anne Horton Cheryl Howell Doris Laidlcr l.inda Lyon Barbara McClain Stephanie Meadows Bonnie Mitchell Carol Mosley Linda Parson Dianna Phillips Sheryl Portis Ann Rose Carla Skeen Donna Toups Bonnie Walters Reba West Judy Williums Beverly Wright Fay Young SECOND SOPRANOS Lavonnc Ammons Colleen Bailey Ann Campbell Karen Casey Carolyn Corwin Susan Cox Sally Daniel Kathleen Dill Carolyn Garrett Pauline Gilbert Sharon Hammack Sharon Holloway Carole Johnson Kay Kenny Judy Korenck Beth McNav Joncll McShan Barbara Ann Morgan Sharon Overstreet Wanda Plochcck Sharon Richardson Patsy Richmond Judy Shoemaker Martha Jo Tucker Patricia Wilson ALTOS Cheryl Burnet Diana Craft Brenda Dilluhunty Judy Faylc Della Ford Dianna Fulmer Susan Gill Kitty Henderson Cynthia Holccek Jennifer Jones Sharon Kelly Barbara Miller Paula Miller Shirley Mims Melanie Moore Charlene O’Hara Dawn Robins Peggy Smith Polly Stephens Barbara Taylor Jo Ann Thorson Sharon Travis Sandra W’ilcox Sharon Martin Flutist Ginny Bethea Flutist Judy Smith Accompanist Mrs. Mary Gucmplc Director 51 The Famous Robert FLUTES Sharon Martin Cinnv Bethea Dianne Smith Jo Anne Horcczy Margaret Mitchan Sherry Pittman Charlotte Fisher Linda Hanna Dianne Cummings Lauretta Livingston Gloria Burns OBOES Carol Badglcy Linda Longacre Julie Via BASSOONS Helen Rose Marie Depew E-FLAT CLARINET Lana Harbour CLARINETS Lois McCullough N'elda Day Katina King Carolyn Leggett lx one Washburn Cheryl Glaw John McCullcy Margaret Young David Westcrmann Mary Lee Clark Carole King Jactjuelin Johnson Beverly Boyd Jane Davis Helen Teten Diane Tiemann Glenda Harper Gaudia Phillip Judy Loughridgc Betty Shepherd Vicki Burton Charlotte Dommert Susan Burris Willie Hopper ALTO CLARINETS Francis Torkelson Cathy Curry Denalda Spitzmillcr Avilda Fisher BASS CLARINETS Judy Riley Bessie James Louise Smith Scottie Ratliff ALTO SAXOPHONES Peggy Wadley Butch Diehel Cora Lou Oliver Pam Williams Beverly Gray Wayne Bradbury Barbara Dendy Judy Robinson Linda Downing Le Cone Taylor Pat Brundige BARITONE SAXOPHONES Linda Hanson Freddy Bauer Lynn O’Sullivan TENOR SAXOPHONES Susan Bryan Ricky Rawley Sandra Scbcsta Martha Strauss Billy Lewis CORNETS Jimmy Emmanuel Sue White Wayne McCleskcy John Robins Lin Junge Donald Denny Peggy Pollard Karen Meigs Hope McDonald Terr Simon John Schultz.
