Lee: This annual is published for you. It is a history of the 1960-61 school year, to which each student has contributed his talents, abilities, knowledge, and attendance. The theme used in this book is Our Year, because we believe this annual symbolizes the entire year, which belongs to all of us. This has truly been a memorial year. To the sophomores, it has been new and exciting. To the juniors, it has been spent in preparation for that big year. To all seniors, it has been a busy year, ending with just a little touch of sadness. The 1961 Lee Traveler staff has ypMiv at JZob it £. This milestone is graduation from Robert E. Lee, where we have gained the foundation of knowledge upon which we will build our futures. It is hard for us to realize the honor and importance of our associa- tion with one another in such an outstanding class, but someday we will look back to the Class of '61 with pride. Members of the senior class have contributed scholastically and athletically in making this one of the greatest years in the history of REL. We have all made lifelong friends and acquired invaluable knowledge. We must now respond to the challenge of the future like true Ganders, carrying our knowledge and spirit into our daily lives and the lives of others. It has been a great honor to serve as your president. It is now my privilege to extend to you my best wishes for a happy and success- ful life. To the Juniors: Looking back upon our efforts and achievements this year, I am sure that as a class and as individuals, we can say that we have made possible one of the most outstanding years in the history of Robert E. Lee High School. This year is our own great opportunity. We shall become the lead- ers of our school. We must also, however, realize the responsibility that we have to our school and ourselves. As leaders, we have pledged ourselves to the task of extending the greatness of Robert E. Lee as only our abilities can limit us. Our responsibilities to ourselves are recogniz- able to us as individuals only, through the extent of our own per- sonal aspirations and our ability to fulfill them. I am very proud to be a part of this class. I believe we will leave Robert E. Lee a better school, and Robert E. Lee will have given us the education that will make us happier and better adapted adults. It has been both a pleasure and an honor to have been your president. I hope that I have successfully fulfilled the duties of my office to the satisfaction of you who have entrusted me with this honor. It is the year we finally reach Robert E. Lee and learn more about Gander spirit and tradi- tions. Since everything is so new, this year passes faster than the or- dinary school year. It is a big step forward from junior high into high school. We now have to begin getting ready for our college careers and our future walks of life. We must start the sophomore year off right, to better ourselves and our school in the coming years at Lee. We are all grateful to the faculty who has been patient in helping us to prepare a foundation for our future. It doesn't take long for everyone to learn the true meaning of the band, the Brigadiers, and the great Gander athletic teams. To me, there was never a feeling so proud as hearing Dull Razor Blues and cheering the team on to victory. Let us never let the spirit die. That powerful squad brought home Robert E. Lee's first district championship in 13 years, and because REL's first basketball team ever to compile a perfect district slate with 14 wins against no losses. Coach Jay Bollinger's present crew, with only two returning lettermen to lead the other eager but relatively inexperienced players, levelled its sights on further accomplishments of its immedi- ate predecessors—who had added four San Antonio Tournament victories to their district string for a total of 18 consecutive wins . . . and who, in the process, had scored a school record of 92 points in one game. Thus it was with high hopes and justifiable pride in Robert E. Lee's wonderful record of last year that 1960-61 Gander Basketballers buckled down to strenuous training long before their season opened in November. 19S9-60 Coach Jay Bollinger Lee-56 Lamar—46 Lee-57 Reagan—44 Lee-70 Jeff Davis—72 Lee-71 Temple—43 Lee—63 Lamar—71 Lee—50 Spring Branch—58 Lee-57 Jeff Davis—51 Lee—61 Clear Creek—69 Lee-72 Reagan—46 f Lee—56 McCallam—49 Lee—56 S. I believe that the future of America depends upon mutual understanding and better cooperation of business, industry, labor, the home, the church, the school, and by the peoples of our own and other lands. I agree to do my utmost to bring about better understanding and cooperation on the part of all these groups. I believe every young person should prepare himself for a useful occupation, and that he should carry on that occupation in a manner that will bring the greatest good to the greatest num- ber. I believe every young person should be actively interested in better social, political, community and family life. I believe every young person has a right to earn his living at a useful occupation and that this right should not be denied him because of race, color, or creed. I believe every young person should take respon- sibility for carrying out assigned tasks in a man- ner that will reflect credit to himself, his associ- ates, his school, and his community. I believe in my own ability to work efficiently and to think clearly, and I pledge myself to use these abilities to make America a better place for everyone. Lee as we remem- ber our deceased friends. The halls seem to be quieter and there is a definite feeling of sorrow in the air, as everyone realizes that these friends and classmates have been taken from our midst. The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away. -Job 1-21 David Sigl«r John Williams David Sigler and John Williams will always be remembered by the students of Robert E. Lee. Their friendliness and fine personalities made them fun to be with, wherever they were. A memory of these two fine boys will ever re- main in the hearts and minds of their close friends who knew them well, their classmates whom they studied with, and the many teachers who taught them. 274 CARL'S RESTAURANT I 102 Alexander Drive Home of the Famous French Doughnut Open 24 Hours a Day We Specialize in the Finest of Heavy Beef Steaks and Fresh Seafood of All Kinds CARL TRENCKMANN Owner JU 3-5518 HUMBLE SERVICE WITH A SMILE SMITH SERVICE STATION MULLENS SERVICE STATION 6002 Bayway Drive LO 6-8301 HUMBLE 518 Park St. JU 3-1275 LAKEWOOD SERVICE STATION RALPH C.
