Lee High School were warmed by our school's be- loved principal, Mr. R. B. Sparks. Then, last year, this great man passed away. He left behind many wonderful and joyful memories. Ever eager to lend a guiding hand to students during their years at Lee, he continued his interest in them by following their progress long after graduation. Faculty members found him always an honorable, understanding friend. His quiet, steadying influence will long be an inspiration to sincere people who strive for better schools and better com- munities. It is with deep reverence that we dedicate The I960 Lee Traveler to the memory of Mr. R. B. Sparks. —THE STAFF Mr. K. E Sparks 5 This has been a year of surprises, most of them happy ones. Perhaps the event that caught us most off guard was the four-inch February snow—the first snowfall .some of us ever watched. It was sunny Gander- land’s first snow in several years, and the deepest since oldtimers-cannot-remcmber- when. Other exciting events ranged from our district championship in basketball to our first compulsory final examinations, with all sorts of other surprises in between. And now, wc bring you more surprises . . . J Dennis Mr. Kobert 8. Cee io Miss Robert 8. Johnny Sanders, a very well-known senior, will always be remembered at Lee for his friendly smile and great personality. The Senior Class, especially, will always keep fresh the memory of Johnny throughout the coming years. 176 To the Students of the Senior Class: The day is rapidly approaching when we will l e called graduates of Robert E. I.ee, but have we ever really stopped to think what it means? To me, it is a climax of three years filled with learning and exper- ience, not only scholastic but extracurricular also. It has been a time of making lifelong friends and adding to our wealth of memories. But being a graduate does not end here. In another year, the Spirit of the Ganders will be carried to all parts of the world by the Class of 1960, and it is our duty to share this unique spirit with all people we come to know. Ours is a heritage to be proud of and uphold, and we must re- member that its future is entrusted to all of us. “Let us then be up and doing, with a heart for any fate; still achieving, still pursuing, learn to labor and to wait.” (Longfellow) Sincerely, President Senior Class Officers A1 Dennis Paula Stricklin William Hudnall Bobby Paulson Vice-President Secretary Student Body President Senior Class President 178 Seniors BENNETT ADAMS HARRY ADAMS JCL. Our version of American Bandstand. 212 To The Junior Class of 1959-60: Let us not feel that we are the “in between” class but the more experienced class of juniors. We have gained much these two years in knowledge, ex- perience and friendship; these are lasting legacies; these will go with us through high school and into college. Let us do as the prophet of old, “push forward.” Do not let it be said of our class of juniors: “So many dropped out to seek something easier.” I would like to thank the junior class for electing me president. I consider it a privilege and honor to serve my friends and my fellow classmates. Next year when we take our positions as leaders of Robert E. Lee, may we keep in mind always that we are what we are because of our parents, friends and, especially, our teachers. May we always look to Him for guidance and direction throughout our days.
