CROSSING THE LI E On 5 February, 1966 the Owens crossed the Equator and after proper initiation the entire crew became Shellbacks. Because of the large number of Pollywogs it appeared that a revolt was imminent. The Pollywogs had their day on the -ith of February and the Phantomlsl made a vain attempt to bring down the Bush along with his cohorts. However, the small group of well organized Shellbacks proved equal to the task and conducted a very successful initiation. Captain Bennett received his orders from King Neptune at 0800 on the morning of the 5th and the long series of trials began. By the time the morning was out a thoroughly exhausted crew had been initiated and all hands were ready for a well deserved rest.
