It was also the year of the presidential election and the campaigners adopted modern methods of barnstorming. The flick of a switch and the twist of a dial brought the chicken-salad circuit into every living room via the Nixon-Kennedy television debates. Americans watched and listened to the closest two-man race since 1884 and earnestly prayed that the man who replaced Dwight D.
