CK C3153? 0m 5W It should be with confidence, responsibility, and strong character, that we leave high school to take our places in society. We must be able to meet the demands and to cope with the problems existent in our modern civilization. It is only with intelligent application of our educational backgrounds that we can hope to contribute to the advancement and to the betterment of the world in which we live. In our beautiful new building we have more facilities and opportunities to provide the students with this essential background. We are proud of our new school as we will be proud of the citizens who leave it. Mr To. Mic : '- n7 Johnsoe WeICo MR. MILO MIELKE '1 mes alumnus Our principal, Mr. Mielke, has advised, guided, and encouraged the students of Robbinsdale since 1936, when the high school was first established. He has watched both our old and new schools grow from hopes and plans to realities. 0:0: PM With our new school came a new as- sistant principal. Mr. Ulrich was formerly the principal of the school at Lakefield, Minnesota. In our new school he helps with the attendance data and the general organi- zations of the building. MR. ULRICH Miss Loe, Miss Manion. Mrs. Springer, Mr. Dawson, Miss Mickelson. Unfailing hands of mercy and an answer to our many problems, scholastic and personal, aptly describe the coun- seling department. We, as students, are indebted to the thoughtful guidance of those who devoted time to provide a college night for seniors, plan out yearly schedules, and advise us, the students, how to show improvement. WW 5:: Out Home Economics Department con- sists of four rooms, each of which has its own purpose and facilities. First, we have a classroom for writing and lecturing. Sec- ondly, one of the basic parts of the depart- ment is the kitchen which consists of seven units. A sewing laboratory with nine ma- chines is the third room in this department. Finally, there is a small room which is for the purpose of interior decorating. We are very fortunate to have a wide variety of courses offered to us in this field. These courses include sewing, co'oking, good grooming, etiquette, food preservation, child care, family and marriage, and interior dec- orating and are taught by Miss Hughes and Miss Sundal. l6 Our Industrial Arts Department offers many courses of which the following are included: machine shop, woodshop, basic electricity, basic metals, architectural drawing, and machine drawing. All the equipment in these shops is new and of the latest design. Mr. Hanson, Mr. Lehner, Mr. Riccelli, and Mr. Wivell are the instructors of the various parts of this department. To prepare students for future jobs, there are many opportunities that can be found in our Industrial Arts Program. Miss Sundal, Miss Hughes The aim of the language courses is to promote and create world understanding among countries. The courses in French, German, and Spanish are given for two years with two credits given when both years are completed. T0 round out the program there are three language clubs, Le Cercle Francais, Der Deutsch Verein, and Espanol, the major activities of which are: Mardi Gras, German Week, and eating at a Spanish restaurant, respectively. Both the students and the teachers feel that language is an important study because the world is steadily growing smaller. I , ' 3 12PM . w! Mr. Ensz, Miss Anderson, Miss Snabbi A high school musical and a class in drama were two great firsts en- joyed by R.H.S. students this year. We would like to say thank you to the Thespians and their advisors, Miss Sinnott and Mr. Swanson, for giving us many outstanding memories to re- call. Mr. Swanson, Miss Sinnott I7 Walking into Mr. Kvamis art classes, one finds many artistic students at work creating works of beauty consisting of advertising illus- trations in commercial art to jewelry making in basic art. Of course, art classes would not be complete without the making of colored post- ers, displays, and dance decorations for school functions, Mr. Kvam School would not be school for some without the challenging and varied choir program under the direction of Mr. Adams. Four hundred students participate in this program of musical development from freshman choir on up to select choir which performs at school and at music festivals. Mr. Adams, Mr. Mendenhall Marching in a parade for President Eisen- hower and playing for school games are two of many activities which the band under the leadership of Mr. Mendenhall participates in during the busy year. Two hundred students make the band room their home for one hour each day playing many different musical selec- tions. Mr. Root, Mrs. Sunde, Mr. Larson, Miss Anderson, Mr. Kemppainen Before an R.H.S. student grad- uates to the outside world, he will gain a first-hand knowledge on a cluster of subjects under the main heading social studies. This group of subjects ranges from world his- tory to the careful study of our complex economic problems. $31? Mr. Christenson, Miss Mickelson, Mr. Thiede, Mr. Henjum wvmxwwwwm Contrary to common belief, these grueling courses do have personal value in that they develop in us a sense of duty. It is then quite clear that an R.H.S. student can only but un- derstand the many authoritative problems of governments past and present. Mrs. Adams, Mr. Driver, Mr. Alden English is required in all three years of high school with an ulti- mate goal of three credits earned. English is given to facilitate stu- dents' use of their native language and to read with understanding translations of foreign works. By reading Shakespeare and one novel per year, they accomplish this. Every student is familiar with a grammar workbook and the exer- cises contained within. The writing of themes and speeches is an im- portant part of this class, and if a student has some stage fright, it should disappear when he graduates from school. Miss Sinnott, Mr. Zimmerman, Mr. Gill, Miss Larson, Mrs. Peterson, Miss Snabbi Because English is used by every- Mrs. Adams, Miss Bouchard, Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Childs. one to communicate thoughts and ideas, this subject is one of the most important. Finding news, taking pictures, and writing headlines are just a few of the problems that have been met and conquered by our 1956-57 Robinis Tale staff whose advisor is Mrs. Patricia Childs. These prob- lems were overcome just fifteen times during the past school year, and it was just this that made the Robinis Tale the outstanding high school newspaper it is. p ga' In. I Attending meetings, casting votes, and meeting deadlines are just a few of the trials and trib- ulations the Robin staff of 1956- 57 has put up with in the hope of producing an annual which you will like. Always willing to help us in fulfilling this goal were our advisors, Miss Peterson and Mrs. Moore. 20 Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Childs, Miss Peterson Miss Brown 1W Letis have no talking over there, is a familiar phrase heard resounding daily through the library of the new high school. It is equipped with formica top work tables and four listening or discussion rooms. The student body provides able assistance for Miss Brown, the librarian. The library is open to all students whether one is just browsing through an exciting novel or magazine, or gathering theme and report data from the wonderful selection of reference material. 2l Browsing H ! Studying? ? ? Nowadays, an education in the basic sciences is a near necessity; consequently, many of our major college courses are de- pendent upon them. To cope with this situation, R.H.S. has a very complete of- fering in these fields. In the long labs with their black tables, faucets, and gas jets, or the biology rooms with their book cases and stuffed animals, any student who so desires knowledge in these courses may receive it. Mr. Johnson, Mr. Lussenhop 64cm? . p55; -5 1 W In order to help to give the fu- ture graduate the basic funda- mentals of mathematics necessary to meet future demands, our mathe- matics department includes courses from general mathematics to solid geometry, with such interlocking courses as algebra, plane geometry, and higher algebra. The requirement for graduation is ari acknowledged understanding of basic fundamentals in mathe- matics. Miss Manion, Mr. Nerdahl, Miss Knudtson, Mt. Hutchinson, Mr. Van Loon. 22 Because of the importance of good health and physical fitness, Robbinsdale has made available to its students one of the finest physical education programs in the state. Under the expert direction of John Grygelko, Bob Larsen, Jim Root, and Marvin Wrucke, R.H.st new di- vided gymnasium and abundance of wide open spaces surrounding the building offer to the student an opportunity to learn football, basketball, track, wrestling, baseball and many other body-building activities. Mr. Wrucke, Mr. Grygelko, Mr. Root, Mr. Larsen. me, 8d With Our brand new gym and locker room, our athletic-minded girls 'seem to find- it rather easy to have fun defending their teams in end- ball, basketball, badminton, archery and base- ball, while, at the same time, building strong healthy bodies. ' - v; , ' Miss Skartvedt and Mrs. Sunde direct all the girls in their activities. Miss Skartvedt, Mrs. Sunde 23 Miss Jacobs Besides putting bandages on cut fingers and taking temperatures, the nurse, Mrs. Flosseth, plays an im- portant role in our school curriculum. She tests our hearing, vision, and during the fall she sees that all the students and teachers have chest x-rays. 24 Miss Sandberg, Mrs. MacDonald, Mrs. Widstrom. One might say our office girls are clearinghouse agents for all the incoming and outgoing information. Their- duties range from making out tardy slips to helping lost students find their way to class. All agree our school would be in shambles without them. Saba! Our school has a wide and varied group of business education courses, which include typewriting, business practice, stenography, bookkeeping, and salesmanship. Typewriting teaches the beginner the basic requirements Mr . . .. . Hagemeister and Mr. Zimmerman chat with necessary to obtam a future offlce posmon, along Wlth alumni. typewriting for personal use. To get students ready for office procedure, they receive training in office procedure by using such machines as transcribing, mimeographing, duplicating machines and how to file. While bookkeeping gives students a founda- tion for work in the accounting and business administrative fields, shorthand, on the other hand, trains the student to take and to transcribe dictation accurately and speedily. After graduation alumni enjoy coming back to reminisce about the pleasant memories of their school days. Two faculty members that they particularly enjoy 'visiting are Mr. Hage- meister and Mr. Zimmerman. A new course, salesmanship, teaches the student to sell himself to the public. All these courses not only help the student for future office positions but help them to know ; i GWMW and to understand others. During World War II, Joe Keller permitted some cracked cylinder heads to go out of his shop and be installed in air- planes. Because of this, twenty-one pilots were killed-possibly his own son, Larry. Mr. Keller's partner was sent to prison as the guilty party. Chris, Joe Kelleris son, discovered his fathers guilt and was about to leave home when Ann Deever, the girl Larry was engaged to before he died, brought forth an old letter from Larry, saying that he had no desire to live knowing that his father had caused the death of twenty-one boys. The play ended with Joe Keller committing suicide because he felt as though they were all his sons. 94 Hello. Laughy. . What'd you do. grow !' You made me show it to you. You wouldn't believe me. When staffed by such powerful hitters as Don Hansen and Jim Ellingboe and such fiel-ders as Rich Dallin and Julian Hook, it was no wonder that the baseball team had such a terrific season. It is an all-around development sport. Under the careful; observant eye of Mr. John Adams, the young professionals of tomorrow practice steadily and earnestly; over and over again, to become proficient in the sport. Golf is a relatively new sport here at Robbinsdale compared to football and basketball. It contributes, however, just as much to the building of American youth. Niblick, mashie, five-iron, and woods are some of the familiar terms which are ever present with these someday-to4become Slingini Sammy Sneads. Golf is on the rise; keep an eye on it! First row: B.
