Will you re- member, many years from now, the life you led at Robbinsdale High School? Will you remember the good, and with it the bad?. . .how you hated to rise so early, to trudge to school at 7 a.m. in this, our first year of split schedules and half-days . . . how, during snack-period each day, we laid aside our books and studies and tried a hand at chocolate milk and cookies ? Will you remember your ve ry first day at school, and all of your 'opening-days and exam weeks thereafter? . . . and the Homecoming parades and football games . . .the TALE deadlines, and class plays . . . your first prom, and dancing to soft mu- sic ? Remember these well, for now at last, every- thing is over: the Game is won, the TALE is ended, the Music has died away. We have completed a part of our lives that will never be recaptured. For each of us, of course, certain aspects of our high school years shall linger longer in our memories . . . this athletic team. . .that language club. . .the other musical organization. . .a special teacher or class, and still more memories that will sweeten further with time. - And so, here is our annual, the ROBIN of 1954- 55, as our only means of recalling our youth at RHS . . . when the years that are spoken of within these pages shall have become a treasured part in the lives and memories of each of us. Through these doors, the main entrance into the private world of RHS, have passed football heroes and Homecoming queens, our auditorium speakers and friends with snack period milk, our school bands and debate squads, and all of the every-day people connected with the little society existing inside our walls. And through these doors have passed years and years of tornorrow's leaders and citizens. All of us, eventually, shall pass forth from these same doors into an entirely new kind of world. What awaits us there. . .yet depends upon us. 6 WW KEITH IRONSIDE Assxstam Supermtendent ag JOHN ADAMS Chou' PATRICIA AUSTINSOIN Enghsh Joumahsm 5 -.3 9. Student Council The students of this high school were represented throughout the year by their Student Council, consisting of one representative from each homeroom. The Council, during the year, sponsored the Leadership Conferences, sent rep- resentatives to state and national conventions and supported other projects to pro- mote school unity and improve the standards and reputation of RI-IS. Robbins- dale was very proud of this fine representative group who did so much to cast the best reflections upon our school. Welcome Club Executive Board Make yourself at home might well be the motto of the Welcome Club. Their fallauditorium for sophomores and new students was just the beginning of their work. Then, throughout the year, they kept busy welcoming and introduc- ing new people to RHS and in February sponsored an all-school dance, with pro- ceeds going to charity. Row 1: J. They will remember the annual Christmas Breakfast at Stouffer's and the package that was GeI'mGl l sent to their German family filled with friendship and good wishes. German Week, during which members conducted all conversation and Club responses in German, left lasting impressions. Through this knowl- edge gained, the members came to better understand the German- speaking peoples and people the world over. Red Cross As the organization with 100070 RHS membership, the Red Cross tried to bring charity and understanding to the students of this school. Red Cross sponsored such noteworthy activities as the Operation Friend- ship, the sending overseas of a chest of clothing, soap, etc., and the lnte rnational Art and Music programs. RHS was especially honored to have aRobbinsdale student, Norman Berg, selected as Vice President to the Hennepin County Chapter House. Nurses' Club was the organization in which future nurses learned about their chosen profession. Even if one did not plan to become a nurse, it was almost impossible to miss the feeling of earnestness that pervaded the group in all its trips to learn more of the work that is con- cerned With serving others. It was the day when everyone, Frosh and Sen- ior alike worked side by side, putting forth for that day their special efforts to make it big and unforgettable for the high school and for the returning alumni. The excitement that reigned throughout the week was stimulated by the band marching through the halls, by posters, and by pep cheers of Dina-Mite Edina! And finally came what everyone had awaited. . .the Coronation Program: the darkened auditorium, the strains of the familiar processional, and the first sight of Robbinsdale's lovely attendants. Then, appearing in white at the door, came Queen Carole. Following her coronation by football Captain Gary Kauffmann, was the entertaining program based on the Roaring Twenties , with flappers, Charlestons, and all. With Homecoming spirits thus raised to their peak, students poured outside where the parade of bands and floats began. From this time until the kickoff against Edina at the evening game, and the Homecoming Dance afterwards, the prevailing atmosphere was one of high spirits, gay reunions, and pride in be- longing at Robbinsdale. Pep Club, Rooter Club School spirit and a greater interest in athletic events were the goals successfully reached by Rob- binsdale's two pep-promoting organizations, Pep Club and Rooter Club. Rooter Club, the newly organized boys' cheering club, was the brother club to the girls' Pep Club. Its purpose was to increase the male support of all ath- letic activities and put the boys' energy and am- bitions into useful and organized fun. Through the work of these organizations, new and unprecedented enthusiasm and spirit filled the Pep Cots halls of RHS during the year. Row 1: P. Featherstone, S. Mickelson, L. Clark, C. Gabler, J. Very seldom were there more than three seniors on the field at one time, yet four higher-rated teams were destined to bow to the gridders from Robbins- dale. Captain-elect Gary Kauffman, who was voted the most valuable member of the team, and Jerry Page and John Bies made the Coaches' All Conference honors. No one will soon forget the hard-fought Homecoming game with Edina that ended in a scoreless tie. The climax of the season saw Coach Irv Nerdahl greatly pleased with his gridders' performance in the new and tricky split-T formation. The Robin grapplers, sporting only three seniors--Gary Kauffman, Roy Carlson, and Chuck Meister--won all but one of their ten conference matches. Not bad for a team predicted as an underdog! The spotlight of the season was probably focused on Captain Gary Kauff- man. Wrestling fans saw him go undefeated all season right up to the final round of the state tournament at Mankato. Blllg 1 fguawgx R 'S gums gms I gosmg 14 ...F if-'ii Coach Bob Larsen's '54-'55 cagers faced many obstacles in their fight for a Lake Conference position this year. Playing with an entire underclassmen squad, with the exception of senior center Denny Sullwold, the cagers' struggle ended as they finished in the 1eague's sixth spot. Their loop record was Zwins and 11losses,with their season record stand- ing at 4 and 12. In non-conference play, the Robins' only loss went to Cam- bridge, while they triumphed over St. Paul Murray and Richfield. One highlight of the season came in the selection of junior Pat Gorman to the Lake League's All-Conference Team. Another high spot of the season oc- curred in the statewide TV telecast of the Robins-St. Louis Park game. The Robins won the hearts of fans throughout the state as they gave league-leading Park a good run for their money. With only one player lost by graduation, the prospects for next year's cagers are very bright. For the present, congratulations to Coach Larsen and his Robin cagers for a hard-fought season of basketball. , l W I Gorman shoots while Davis watches. Davis rebounds and drives in for a shot. Ski Club The ski team.was something new at Robbinsdale this year, but young as it was, the skiers emerged from the state meet at Duluth in fifth place. The team was composed of six members from the somewhat larger ski club. Larry Brucklemeyer, who took fourth in the jumping honors, Jack Car- son, Tom Ryan, Jerry Peterson, Ted Shallbetter, and participating coach Steve Rieschl comprised the team. Champ Rieschl He's national ski jumping champ, and what's more, he's from Robbinsdalef' Such was the proud remark made by many a Robin after senior Steve Rieschl returned from the nation-wide tournament in Montana as Na- tional .Jumping Champion. Steve credited his coveted award to ex- perience and practice. He first felt the thrill of skiing at the age of four and his present activities include coaching the Robbinsdale 4 Ski Team.
