TABLE OF CONTENTS FACULTY SENIORS STUDENTS ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS Our annual is one of those cherished souvenirs which will always have a place in our memory, because what is pictured within its pages has become a treasured part of the school life of everyone of us. 3 DEDICATION This year marked the twenty-fifth year of service given by Mr. Milo Mielke as principal of the Robbinsdale High School. There have been many changes in our school system during his years of service. Mr. Mielke entered our school system in August, 1929, when he took the position as principal of the junior high. In 1936, our high school building was built. Since then, Mr. Mielke has witnessed eighteen graduation classes, including two mid-year classes. Mr. Mielke has had great pride in our high school and its students. All of his memories connected with our school and student body are pleasant ones, as Mr. Mielke was blessed with the virtue of forgiving and forgetting. He has had a great interest in all his graduates and the alumni enjoy coming back to visit with him. There are many forthcoming problems in our large school system and we wish Mr. Mielke much good fortune as he continues to serve as principal of our school. It is with pleasant thoughts and a deep sense of gratitude that we seniors of 1954 dedicate our annual to Mr. Mielke. 4 MILO M. MIELKE 5 . . . From the day we took Mother' s firm hand and held it tightly as we met our first teacher, until the day we were presented with our diplomas, our instructors have given us the encouragement and understanding so helpful to us all. Once again, another school year has rolled by... Remember the arrival of Oscar Barbalat from Belgium and Marianne Denecke from Germany, who brightened the year for all RHS students? Now, we have to say farewell to all these activities and carry them only as memories when we casta glance at the high school corner showcase. 16 t SENIORS Our fondest dream has come true on graduation day as we receive our diploma, signifying the honor of having completed our high school education; we are now beginning a new adventure in life. There was size to spare in the line, and plenty of drive and shiftiness in the backfield. Although the record was a very respectable six-win and two-loss combination, it wasn't significant of the real power the team possessed. Most of the squad was composed of seniors, and to illustrate their worth, five of them placed on the All Conference rating. As a feature attraction, Captain Dave Butler became the first player from Robbinsdale ever to win All State honors. Karl Berlin, Jim Bistodeau, Dick Engen, and Denny Taylor were the other four seniors to win All Conference laurels. Captain Dave Butler Coaches Rarin to go! KING OF THE FALL Highlighting the year was the spirited Homecoming win over an aggressive St. Louis Park eleven. Also in the spotlight, was the heartbreaking one-touchdown loss to league-leading Edina. The Robins, down by two touchdowns, fought gamely to come back and to tie the score, but Edina cashed in the clincher on four plays from the three-yard line. The first touchdown of the year is always pleasant to recall, and this season it was Jerry Halverson squirming over the eight-yard line against Mound in the conference opener. The final tally of the year was recorded by Jim Bistodeau at St. Cloud. Yes, this wasn't a championship season, but the thrills, spirit, and action made it seem that way. The locals finished the schedule with a 17-loss, 2-win record, yet narrowly missed defeating second-place St. Louis Park in the last game of the season. A new league free-throw record was established by team captain, Verdi Blonigan, who dropped 78 out of 132 gifters in twelve games for an average of 6.5 per game. Five senior players graduated this year. They were Jack Burns, Chuck Hille, Ron Johnson, Verdi Blonigan and Joe Walovicz. Coach Bob Larsen, new to Robbinsdale this year, had a big job of building to do as only two of last year's starting five remained. All in all, both coach and team deserve lots of credit for a hard-fought basketball season. B-SQUAD Row 1: W. Gutches, J. Bies, D. McClain, W. Cox, J. Donicht, J. Page. Row 2: R. Lindblom, T. Determination, ability, good coaching, and toughness all combined to make this year's wrestling squad a good one. The grapplers , who lost only twice in conference matches , both times to Anoka, finished out their eleven wins with a second in the Regional. They came within one point of first-place Mound whom they had defeated twice during the regular season. Co-captain Larry Hennig went on through the entire season without being beat or tied, and thenwent onto take the state championship in the heavyweight bracket. Denny Ernst, the other co-captain, copped third in the state, and a second in the Regional. A total of six wrestlers, including Steve Rettke, Denny Ernst, Dick Zalusky, Jack Stowe, Frank Meister, and Larry Hennig, participated in the state tournament. Robbinsdale tied for seventh in the state to top off a very successful season. A SQUA.D, Mr. Grygelko.L. Hennig, C. Martin, J. Stowe, R. Zalusky, G. Hurley, G. Kauffmann, F. Meister, S. Rettke, D. This year, there were mostly juniors on the squad. The three seniors, Roger Anderson, Gordy Robison, and Don Whitman, carried much of the load along with Dave Marchand, Marv Hoisve, and Grant Taft. Mr. Root, in his first year of coaching hockey here-, looks back on a one-win and a thirteen-loss record, but the prospect for next year appears brighter due to the number of returning lettermen and the anticipated return of Steve Rieschl, who was out this season with an injury. l cvue f....................................a tcC Sfcsutty Sfronts 7e«t U Row 1: W.
