“
It is oar sincerest hope that as you read through this book, you will come to a better understanding of our school life at Robbinsdale. That as you read, you will feel that you have spent a day -- with its troubles and problems, its hopes and promises -- here at our school and so realize the place of loyalty and devotion that RHS holds in our hearts. Robbinsdale High School Robbinsdale, Minnesota 60MTEMTS FACULTY------ SENIORS------ STUDENTS----- ACTIVITIES--, i ATHLETICS— '• o DEDICATION Charles Johnson Commencement time came sooner for Chuck Johnson than for the rest of his classmates at Robbinsdale High School. Suddenly, during the school year, the angel of mercy brought him to the House of Many Mansions -- the land of non-ending day and of beginning again. Chuck won many honors but none greater than to hear the voice of his heavenly Father as he entered his eternal home: Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the house of the Lord. The Reverend Reuben K. Youngdahl To express one's feelings for a departed classmate is difficult; for Chuck Johnson's brilliant mind, sparkling personality, and warmth as a friend defy description. We say only that his virtues create an ideal for all of us. It is needless to say that we miss a comrade who was picked in the budding years of a promising life by the Eternal Hand which guides the fate and destinies of all mortals; therefore, as a humble gesture in appreciation of his years with us, the Robin staff of 1953 dedicates its efforts to the unconquered spirit of a boy never to be forgotten. But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When 1 have crost the bar. Robbinsdale has had championship teams in the past, but the up-and-down season of 1952 will be remembered as long as any of them. Irv Nerdahi's 1952 Robins started off the year with a trip to St. Cloud Tech, but the Tigers set back their unwelcome visitors to the tune of 27-12. Captain Tommy Jacobs of the Robins stole the show by grabbing a pass on his 20 and galloping the remaining 80 yards for the first local TD of the year. After the stormy Cloud contest, however, things looked up for the Robins. In the next three games, they were able to hold a trio of opponents to only 6 points, collect 47 for themselves and shut out Mound and Columbia Heights in the process. But sandwiched between these two tilts was a 6 - 6 deadlock with Hopkins in which half the lighting system failed for the first two periods. Possibly the turning point of the season came when the Robins were stunned by the admittedly weak Minnetonka Skippers in their third conference game. It was at this time that star quarterback Chuck Johnson contracted polio. Chuck passed away October 8. The Robins faced their homecoming game with heavy hearts. Edina's victory was a tribute to the Hornet's superiority over the conference, as few teams could have gotten past the Robins that night. Two defeats at the hands of Park and Wayzata closed out the season for an over-all record of two wins, five losses, and one tie -- a season which found a potentially sound Robin team, prevented by injuries and even death, from reaching more than momentary greatness. Dave Butler and Jim Burke were named to the coaches' All Conference squad, and Burke was elected most valuable of the Robins. DEFENSIVE TEAM ROW 1: J. Bistodeau. D. Butler, R. Slaney, L. Dmohoski, L. For that utterance was, for the most part, the entire vocabulary of Robbinsdale fans. And well it might be, for their favorites came up with the poorest conference showing of any local squad in the history of the school. The record shows that the Robins wound up with five wins and fourteen losses for their overall season's efforts. But what the record also shows, and what should remain mostly in the memories of Robin fans, is that eight of those fourteen losses were by six points or less. If several shots had bounced in a different direction or had luck ridden the team bus more often, the final story might have been a complete turnabout. The charges of Ed Kernan didn't have such a tough time of it in non-conference play as they took four out of six games, but the dark fact of the matter is that they lost eleven out of twelve conference tilts. Although this was a losing season, it was packed with thrills throughout. Take for instance Jim Zakariasen's last-ditch field goal that snatched victory from the clasps of the Robins with only seconds remaining in the second Minnetonka game, or the thrilling overtime tilt with St. Paul Murray. Last but not least, who could forget the second Edina game played on the Hornet's new floor? Nothing was more excitihg than that first and only conference win. But the end came quickly for the Robins when the Minnetonka quint conquered them in the first round of sub-district playdowns. Paul Watten and Don Berndt, who sparked the locals all season long, received the All-Conference and Most Valuable Robin awards respectively. One of the sad disappointments though, was the 4-1 loss suffered at the hands of Edina in the first game of Regional playdowns. Graduating this year are Goalie, Gary Sieve Bleum, Fred Glanz, Earl Hassinger, Vince Hamman, Wilbur Nelson, Duane Christenson, and Dan Hat Trick Shanesy, leaving Mr. Braga with a good-sized building job for next year. Although Johnny Grygelko's wrestlers weren't State Champions this year, they had the distinction of being one of the few squads to beat Wayzata -- last season's champs and this year's co-champs. After a successful round of dual meets, the Robins went on to State Tourney play in which Harrison Ziegleman, Gary Kauffman, Denny Ernst, Gordy Grandner, Harry Champlain, and Rusty Lipps participated. Mr. Grygelko also has plenty of returning lettermen to spark his squad next year. An active team in this high school that is rarely heard from is the gymnastic squad under the coaching of Russ Simondet. Seniors Louie White and Dick Veeck led the boys this year to several meets, the largest being held at Mankato. In all meets in which they participated, the locals fared well and gave RHS a good name in the art of gymnastics. GYMNASTICS ROW 1: W. Zirbcs, R. Veeck. Mr. Simondet, H. Defren, G. Diethert.
