With participation in six meets, the 1970 RRHS Yellow Jackets Cindermen captured 8 first places, while nailing 2 second, 3 third, 1 fourth, and 1 fifth places in various events. Broad-jumping ace Charles Thornton and fleet-footed Arthur Ray Hawkins led the RRHS Cindermen, cap- turing fourteen places between them. Thornton placed eight times, with five being first-place honors. Out of six times placing, Hawkins placed four times in the 100 yard dash. Both Thornton and Hawkins competed at the Re- gional, Sectional, and State events, with Thornton taking a first, second, and third in broad jumping events, while Hawkins took fourth and fifth in the 100 yard dash. Leaping past a 22’6” broad jump record, Thornton set a new regional record of 22'7”. Charles Laughlon, and Billy Netherland, teamed with Hawkins and Thornton, captured a first-place in the 880 relay. Rounding out the first place scoring for the RRHS Tracksters during the season, Dennis Philips vaulted 1110” to capture a first-place in the pole vault competi- tion. Although recording no first-place finishes among other schools, the Yellow Jacket Cindermen finished third in two meets composed of four schools.
