Basketball Roanoke Rapids 58 Tarboro 53 Roanoke Rapids built a 12 point lead through three quarters and then held off a fourth quarter Tiger rally to defeat Tarboro 58-53. Turnovers nearly cost the Jackets a victory but time ran out on Tarboro, with them five points behind. Scoring honors were shared by Bill Davis and Greg Taylor, with 14 points apiece; Tim Sweat bucketed 12 points; and Arthur Hawkins netted 10 points. Roanoke Rapids 65 West Carteret 77 West Carteret handed Roanoke Rapids its second defeat of the season by winning 77-65. The Jackets took a first quarter lead but saw it surmounted in the second and third quarters when the Patriots out- scored the visiting team 47-20. The Jackets tried in vain to erase the Patriot lead but could only come within 12 points as the final period ended. Tim Sweat led the Jacket attack with 28 points. Roanoke Rapids 62 Northeastern 58 The Yellow Jackets build a 10 point lead through three quarters, saw it dwindle to two points in the fourth quarter, and then assured them- selves of victory when Arthur Hawkins sank some pressure free throws in the waning moments of the fourth period, as the Jackets beat the Northeastern Eagles for the second time, 62-58. Arthur Hawkins scored 18 points; Ricky Fondren, 14 points; and Tim Sweat, 10 points. Roanoke Rapids 63 Havelock 43 The Yellow Jackets got off to a slow start but gradually increased their lead to beat Havelock 63-43 in their second meeting of the year. After scoring only six points in the initial period, Roanoke Rapids hit in double figures in the remaining quarters to bring home the victory. Tim Sweat led Jacket scorers with 24 points. Greg Taylor and Bill Davis scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. Roanoke Rapids 61 Bertie 66 The Bertie Falcons avenged an earlier loss to Roanoke Rapids by pulling out a 66-61 victory over a never-say-die Jacket team. Behind by 14 points at one time, the Yellow Jackets kept battling back and finally led the Falcons by a point with less than three minutes remaining in the game; but a three point play put Bertie ahead to stay with 50 seconds left. Tim Sweat netted 22 points, while Bill Davis hit for 13 markers. Roanoke Rapids 61 Washington 79 Washington’s quickness again prevailed as the Pam Packs bombed the visiting Jackets 79-61. The Yellow Jackets didn’t get the scoring punch they needed until the fourth quarter, when they netted 30 points. Tim Sweat put 21 points through the hoop to lead Jacket scoring. Bill Davis scored 16, and Arthur Hawkins added 11 points. Roanoke Rapids 68 Tarboro 61 Another close game resulted in the second meeting between the Jackets - and the Tigers of Tarboro. The second quarter proved to be the difference. The Yellow Jackets outscored the home team by seven points that period, while the two teams equalled each other’s output in the first quarter and the second half. Tim Sweat poured in 35 points to power the Jacket offense. Arthur Hawkins netted 12 points and Bill Davis scored 10 points. Roanoke Rapids 53 East Carteret 49 Roanoke Rapids outlasted a Mariner fourth quarter surge and defeated East Carteret for the second time this season. The Jackets pulled away in the second quarter to a 10 point halftime lead, increased it to 12 in the third quarter, and held on for the victory as East Carteret scored 17 points to the Yellow Jackets’ 9 in the fourth quarter. Tim Sweat led in scoring with 15 points, followed closely by Arthur Hawkins and Bill Davis with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Roanoke Rapids 63 Conference Tournament Play Tarboro 64 Roanoke Rapids seemed to be cruising to an easy victory over Tarboro in the first round of the Conference Tournament with a 17 point lead midway through the second quarter; however, by halftime the Vikings were down by nine points, Tarboro continued to whittle away at the Jacket lead until] they went ahead for the first time 64-63, leaving one second on the clock. The Jackets failed to score on the ensuing play and lost by a single point. Arthur Hawkins led in scoring with 22 points, followed by Ricky Fondren with 13, and Tim Sweat with 12,

With a little more than four minutes of play in the fourth period, the Junior Jackets slipped into the lead. Behind the shooting of Tyrone Hockaday and Tom Maddrey, the Jayvees held the lead. Rock Powell led the scoring attack with 12 points. Hockaday canned 11, while Maddrey put 8 points through the loops. Roanoke Rapids 40 Northern Nash 50 The Junior Jackets fell behind 13-1 in the first period and could never get back in the game as they fell victims to the Baby Knights 50-40. Donnie Hux’s foul shot was the only point scored by the Junior Jackets in the first period, as they were outplayed under the boards. Tyrone Hockady and James Vincent shared the scoring honors with 11 points apiece. Roanoke Rapids 85 Northampton 40 The Junior Jackets outscored the Jayvees of Northampton 53-14 in the middle two periods, and went on to win the game going away. Jimmy Deloatch led the Roanoke Rapids Jayvees with 12 points. Roanoke Rapids 71 Northampton 30 The Roanoke Rapids Jayvees demolished the Northampton Jayvees ina return match, 71-30. The Junior Jackets caught fire early and stayed that way the remainder of the game. Rock Powell scored 22 points and Jimmy Deloatch had 10. Roanoke Rapids 86 Northeastern 68 The Jayvees held a 20 point lead entering the final period and only lost two of that as they defeated the Junior Eagles of Northeastern 86-68. Tyrone Hockaday scored 30 big ones and was followed by Jimmy Deloatch with 17, Rock Powell with 15, and Donnie Hux with 12 points. Roanoke Rapids 69 West Carteret 41 Behind the scoring of Rock Powell and Tryone Hockaday, who netted 19 each, the Junior Jackets coasted to an easy victory over the Junior Patriots from West Carteret. Jimmy Deloatch followed Powell and Hockaday with 11 points. Roanoke Rapids 80 Havelock 55 The Junior Jackets used a fast moving offense and a pressure defense to defeat the Jayvees of Havelock 80-55. The Jayvees took an 11 point first quarter lead and really poured it on in the third quarter to take the victory. Roanoke Rapids 49 Bertie 44 The Jayvees found their victory at Bertie a little harder to come by than usual. They could not pull away from the fledgling Falcons, but they took the jead early in the game and never lost it. Jimmy Deloatch and Rock Powell shared scoring honors for the Junior Jackets with 12 points each. Roanoke Rapids 63 Washington 39 The Junior Jackets rolled up another big lead as they downed the Washington Jayvees 63-39. Leading the scoring for the Jayvees was Rock Powell with 20 points. Jimmy Deloatch and Tyrone Hockaday scored 12 points each. 61 Roanoke Rapids 66 East Carteret 30 Using a fast-breaking offense and a hard pressing defense, the Jayvees defeated the Junior Mariners 66-30. Jimmy Deloatch led the Jayvees scoring with 13 points, followed by James Vincent with 12, and Tyrone Hockaday with 10. Roanoke Rapids 65 Tarboro 58 Behind the 16 point output of Tom Maddrey, the Junior Jackets defeated the Junior Vikings of Tarboro 65-58. James Vincent followed Maddrey with 13 points and Tyrone Hockaday canned 10. Roanoke Rapids 55 West Carteret 62 Although Rock Powell pumped 24 points for the Junior Jackets, they lost their first conference game to the Patriot Jayvees 62-55. Tyrone Hockaday followed Powell with 13 points. Roanoke Rapids 55 Northeastern 58 The Junior Jackets lost their second game in a row as the Baby Eagles of Northeastern outscored them by three points 58-55. After leading through the first three periods, the Jayvees fell behind at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Tyrone Hockaday took the honors in scoring with 12 points. Roanoke Rapids 62 Havelock 37 The Jayvees trounced the Baby Rams 62-37 in their second meeting of the year. The two middle periods were the big quarters for the Junior Jackets as they pulled out in front by 25 points. Tyrone Hockaday led the scoring with 14 points, while Rock Powell scored 12. Roanoke Rapids 60 Bertie 44 The Junior Jackets downed the Baby Falcons for the second time as Rock Powell bucketed 16 points. He was followed by Tyrone Hocka- day with 14 and Donnie Hux with 13. Roanoke Rapids 64 Washington 67 The Jayvees fell victim to the Pam Pack Jayvees in a thrilling 67-64 overtime loss. The Junior Jackets lost their 11 point lead in the second half and could only score 3 points to the Pam Pack’s 6 in the overtime period. Rock Powell was the Jayvees’ big gun with 24 points, while Tom Maddrey added 16, and James Vincent canned 10. Roanoke Rapids 55 Tarboro 57 The Junior Jackets could not regain their 6 point halftime deficit as the Junior Vikings beat them 57-55. Rock Powell led Jayvee scoring with 21 points. Tyrone Hockaday followed Powell with 16 points. Roanoke Rapids 54 East Carteret 42 The Jayvees finished regular season play with a 54-42 win over the Baby Mariners of East Carteret. A fourth quarter scoring outburst assured the Junior Jackets of their victory. James Vincent and Rock Powell topped the Jayvee scoring attack with 13 points apiece. Conference Tournament Play Roanoke Rapids 49 East Carteret 27 Roanoke Rapids, seated first in the first annual Northeastern Conference Junior Varsity Tournament, defeated eighth seated East Carteret in the first round, 49-27. The Junior Jackets held an 11 first quarter lead and were never headed as they continually increased the margin during the remainder of the game. Rock Powell topped Jacket scores with 12 points. Roanoke Rapids 52 Northeastern 49 In the second round of the Junior Varsity Tournament, Roanoke Rapids blew an early first quarter lead but held on through the rest of the game to take the semi-final victory over Northeastern. The Baby Eagles took the lead over the Junior Jackets in the second half and the game see-sawed back and forth till the end, with the Jackets victorious in the last minute surge. Rock Powell led the Jacket scoring punch with 18 points. He was followed by Tyrone Hockaday with 11 markers. Roanoke Rapids 49 West Carteret 34 The Junior Jackets took the Northeastern Conference Junior Varsity Crown by downing the Junior Patriots of West Carteret in the initial Junior Varsity Tournament. The Jackets obtained a 21-13 first half lead and increased it to 14 by the end of the third quarter. They outscored the Patriots by a point in the final period to bring home the tourna- ment trophy. Tyrone Hockaday scored 16 points. James Vincent, 12; and Rock Powell, 11.
