The Senior High Student Council is Democracy's Workshop in the Senior High School. lt is composed ot one representative from each homeroom in the Senior High School. The purpose of the council is to develop leadership qualities in its mem- bers and to increase school spirit. The council's aims are these: to acquaint the student body with their activities through council meetings con- ducted by the homeroom representatives in the rooms, to plan and direct school projects suggested by students, and to help prepare the students for future civic duties by giving them responsibilities, At all times the council represents the voice of the senior high student body. These were selecting monitors to regulate hall and stairway traffic between classes and having a contest for the cleanest room. The rooms were given grades, and at the end of the year the room with the highest grade was given a prize. The council decided to give an award each semester to the best citizen in Junior High, It also planned to decorate one of the old Home Ec, rooms as a permanent meeting place for the Council. Later the Junior Council worked with the Senior in revision of the Student Handbook. One of the highlights of the council's activities was their annual dance which was given in the spring. The Key Club is a service organization which is under the Kiwanis Club, its sponsor. The Key Club is made up of Senior High boys who have been selected for their good character, scholastic ability, and initiative. To develop character, build leadership, and promote better citizenship are the purposes of the Club. To serve the school and the community this year the Key Club has marked off the parking area at school and given baskets to needy families at Christmas and Thanksgiving. The objectives of the Monogram Club are to promote and improve competitive athletics at R. R. l-l. S,, to build and maintain a high standard of sportsman- ship on the field, on the court, and in the stands. The club's activities include whole- hearted support of any sport during the season by helping to maintain order at games, selling or taking up tickets ot games, and performing any other service necessary tor a successful athletic event. X JUNIOR RED CROSS Junior Red Cross officers make plans for the club's project of sending a gift chest to a school. To promote service, health, interna- tional understanding, citizenship, and intelligent leadership are the aims of the Junior Red Cross. The Club's projects this year were the Red Cross enrollment drive, the overseas chest drive, and the blood program. CAMERA CLUB Mr. Taylor and Camera Club members inspect snapshots which have been submitted for their annual photography contest. The Camera Club has as its objectives, the stimulating of interest and activity in photography. During the year the club has had instruction in darkroom technique, prac- tical work in developing and finishing photos, and has sponsored a school-wide snapshot contest. The club also exhibited prints of the prize-winning snapshots entered in the National Scholastic Press Association's High School contest last year. The purpose of the French Club is to better acquaint French students with f France--its people, its customs, and the practical use of the language. The club presented an assembly pro- gram, contributed to the French Tuber- culosis Fund and the Key Club concession stand project, in addition to donating several French books to the library. S A Social activities included a Christmas party and a dance in the spring. The club programs included games and songs in French, and several mem- bers had French correspondents. Johnson X 96 The Moderns, directed by Senior Roddy Wood, are now in their eighth year. They have come to be known as one of the best high school dance bands in the state. The sound of the band has been compared to that of Les Brown's orches- tra. The purpose of the Moderns is to provide experience in playing dance music for members of the regular bond who are interested in it. Next the Yellow Jackets traveled to Ahoskie where they out-played the Indians all the way. Buck Wilson caught a pass on the twenty-yard line, and Bobby Gray ran the touchdown which clinched the game for the Jackets with a score of 6 to O. Roanoke Rapids played its next game at home with New Bern. The Jackets won 52 to 42. The second game Roanoke Rapids played with Weldon was a hard-fought game. lt was nip and tuck all the way, with both Weldon and Roanoke Rapids boys hitting well. With a slim lead our defense held them and the game ended with the Yellow Jackets 43 and the Tornadoes 42. The Jackets had an easy time in the game against Seaboard. The Roanoke Rapids defense kept Seaboard from scoring many points. The Yellow Jacket offense clicked perfectly and the game ended 64 to 29 in the Jackets' favor. The second conference game was with Kinston. At the beginning the game was close but as the game progressed the Jackets gradually pulled ahead and with good defense and frequent points the Jackets won 62 to 53. In this game against Washington another good defensive showing was made. The Yellow Jackets forwards and guards hit from the floor and our boys captured the rebounds regularly under both baskets. The game ended with the score 53 to 49 in favor of the Jackets. The Jackets dropped their fourth conference game against Greenville. The score was 52 to 43. The next game was with Elizabeth City and Roanoke Rapids was ready for this one. The Yellow Jackets were sparked-up and got an early lead and kept it for the remainder of the game. Roanoke Rapids won 60 to 46. ln the game with New Bern, the Bears were hitting from all over the court. The Jackets fought hard but could not stop them. New Bern won with a score of 85 to 53. The game with Jacksonville Started out to be a good game for Roanoke Rapids but the Jackets dropped behind late in the first half. ln the second half they closed the lead to only a few points but the Jacksonville team edged away again. The score was 68 to 55 in favor of the Cardinals. This second game with Kinston was a great ball game. The score was close throughout the game. Toward the last of the game Kinston and Roanoke Rapids were exchanging point for point, but the Yellow Jackets couldn't hit on their foul shots in the last few seconds and lost 48 to 46. In this second game with Washington the Pam-Pack got a lead and kept it and no matter what the Jackets would do, they couldn't get ahead of them. The game ended Washington 44 and Roanoke Rapids 36. ln their next to the last home game the Jackets played Greenville. The game was close during the first half but in the second the Phantoms got a lead that the Yellow Jackets couldn't tap. The final score was 7l to 60. The last home game was played with Elizabeth City. ln this game the Yellow Jackets got an early lead and after the first quarter much substitution was made. Roanoke Rapids won with a score of 75 to 61. For their last regular game the Jackets traveled to New Bern. The score was close and stayed that way throughout the game. In the last quarter the Yellow Jackets were hitting very well but New Bern managed to pull through and win by one point. The score was 4l to 40. ln the tournament the Yellow Jackets were eliminated in their first game, against Greenville. They tried hard but couldn't overcome the lead Greenville got early in the game. They only lost two games out of the nineteen they played-one to Washington, 54 to 29, and one to Kinston, 47 to 42. The Junior Jackets showed good sportsmanship and playing ability. Coach Curtis built a team that has given an excellent account of itself this season, The team was sparked by excellent ball handling and fine shooting ability. The Jayvees earned every victory with team play and hard work. Playing on the Jayvees provides valuable experience for the boys who will later be the mainstays on the varsity teams. Collins sets him down. 3 L, ,,,5, VARSITY The Yellow Jacket baseballers of Roanoke Rapids turned in a commendable record of six vic- tories, one tie, and eight defeats. The Jackets didn't have many veterans last year but had ci lot of material coming from the tenth and eleventh grades. The Roanoke Rapids club had an entire new pitching staff and the lack of experience proved fatal. No matter what the reason, the Jacket base- ball players could not muster the strength to match the competition BASEBALL towards the last part of the season. Early in the baseball season the Yellow Jackets enjoyed a winning streak with five wins and two losses. Oxford, Henderson, Greenville, Elizabeth City, and Jacksonville fell before the Yellow Jackets, but Wilson and Kinston outslugged the team. Then Roanoke Rapids hit a losing streak, losing to New Bern, Jacksonville, Washington, Kinston, Greenville. Next the Yellow Jackets won over Elizabeth City and lost their last game to New Bern. TRACK The first track meet that Roanoke Rapids entered was supposed to be a triangular track meet with Greenville and Elizabeth City. Greenville couldn't make it so Roanoke Rapids and Elizabeth City went ahead with the meet. Elizabeth City defeated the Yellow Jacket cin- dermen in their first meet. ln the next track meet, Roanoke Rapids played Elizabeth City again. lt was a close meet all the way with Elizabeth City leading only by a few points. When the track meet was over Roanoke Rap- ids lost by a few points, 44-37. Roanoke Rapids played their third straight meet with Eliza- beth City. In this meet we were missing a cou- ple of boys because of sprained ankles. Our fourth meet was held in Wilson. There the Blackerbymen sparked up and took a roaring victory over Wilson beating them 49-30. The final track meet was held at Green- ville with Roanoke Rapids, Washington, Greenville, New Bern, Elizabeth City, and Jacksonville participating in it. ln this meet the Yellow Jackets finished fifth and thus fin- ishing in fifth place in the Northeastern Con- ference.
