SUTTONQ DAVID BLACKVVELDER, PRESIDENTQ BILL TOOMY, VICE PRESIDENTQ X7VONNE PELLE-rr, EcRnTARY The people pictured on this page are merely the representatives of the students. Backing up these officers is the entire Student Body and through this cooperation the student government has been a success this year. During the 1957-58 session the Roanoke College family has grown closer due to the activities performed and improvements made within the Student Body. In conjunction with the Honor Council, the Student Body revised the Honor Code and a court of appeals was introduced this year. The dormitory proctor system and proper attire for meals were initiated this year. Another important function in the 1957-58 session was the first Religious Retreat, through which the students were reunined in religious realizations. The campus saw the beginning of two new dormitories in the fall. The officers for the past year were: David Blackwelder, Presidentg Bill Toomy, Vice Presidentg and Vonnie Pellett, Secretary-Treasurer. Ellis and Toomy were again the high scorers for the Maroons with 22 and 18 points, respectively. 97 51' 'N if 'EI' H 24533 gg ee, 629534 QL ,,:.,. :fi x I n 49 SOCCER The Maroons ended the 1957 season with a 5-4-2 over-all record. The record shows a winning season but is not indicative of the ability of the players. They put on some tremendous performances in certain games but in others that certain spark of life was missing. Recognition should go to Harry Clegg who was placed on the first team Mason-Dixon, Co-Captain Robert Nelson second team, and Co-Captain Clilf Shaw and Roger Sullivan honorable mention. fFir:z Row, Left to Righzj Inu RALEIGH, Russ Coox, Roslin SULLIVAN CSecond Row, Left to Riglztj ED BOYER, PETE LAwsoN, JACK '11HOMAS, JIM OQVIAHONEY, CLIFF S1-IAW, HAIRRY CLEGG QThird Row, Lqfz 10 R-ightj JOHN HYLTON, DON IQERR, NIIKE KENIP, PHIL DUVALL, LENNY IQATZ, BOB NELSON, REUEEN O1zTENBE1xc, Tom NIURRAY 100 Roanoke Roanoke Roanoke Roanoke Roanoke Roanoke Roanoke Roanoke Roanoke Roanoke. . . . . . Roanoke cleaned up in their own Conference and had to go out of the Conference to find competition which they found in a potent VVilliam and Mary team that romped OE with the Southern Conference-Championship after just barely squeezing out a 27-31 victory from the Maroons. Roanoke's captain, Howard Meineke, shattered the course record only to be beaten by VVil1iam and Mary's Southern Conference Champion Bob DeTOmbe after leading him for three miles. ' ' Roanoke won the rest of the meets and walked OE with the Little Eight and Mason-Dixoii Championship. Howard Meinclte pulled down the top slate for the lVlaroons in both championships along with a line showing by George Jocher whoiran record to Meinclte in the Little Eight. Besides Meiiicke and Iocher, Roanoke had lvayne VVilson, lVarren Light and Dick Emberger in the top fifteen. The Maroons did not have an official coach but many thanks to former Coach Homer Bast who gave a great deal of his time to making the team another great one. 102 INDO0R TRACK Es ' W , A' T99-N ' 2 ' W A 'XZ Q. .3 LLEGE ? In the Little Eight and lVIason-Dixon Conferences, the Maroons Walked away easily with both champion- ships and trophies. The only competition offered our runners was the Norfolk Division of William and Mary in the Little Eight and Catholic University in the Mason-Dixon Conference. The Maroons have now Won the Little Eight Championship for four consecutive years and the lVIason-Dixon Championship for six consecutive years. 103 TRACK The MaI'OOIl track team Will be opening its outdoor season with another powerhouse. Having lost only five lettermen from last year's team they should prove to be one of the strongest teams in the East. The last dual meet lost by a Roanoke College track team was in the Spring of 1953. They are now displaying an astonishing record of 38 consecutive dual meet victories. The strongest opposition that will be odered this year Will be on their southern trip to Florida. The Thin- clads will be running against Miami University and Florida State who are both big contenders in their conference. The team will be coached by Mr. Fox. Opening practice found Hve of the six positions being hlled by veteran men, but stiif competition was oifered them in holding these positions by prospective freshmen Great improvement was shown this year not only in ability, but in interest. Next yearis team finds all of its lettermen returning except for Bill Cerelli who was the only senior on Letterrnen on this year's team were Dick Jordan, Bill Cerelli, Lu members on the team are Don Long, Ted Neimen, and Ben Dushane TENNIS the squad thei Nlauney, Bill Naff and Ken Gerlxen Other SWIMMING Roanoke's swimming team, although it never finished on top in any of its meets, completed a comparatively successful year. The differences between the scores dropped considerably over last year's, and in the meet with American University, Roanoke had the pressure on hard during the whole time. This shows great promise, forlast year the team was composed entirely of freshmen and this year its members were sophomores and freshmen. Two outstanding men have been prominent not only here at Roanoke, but also throughout the whole Mason- Dixon Conference. They are VVill Caterson and Bob Gately. VVill swims the 60-440-yard freestyles and now holds the school record in both events, and Bob is undefeated in zoo-yard backstrolce, holding also the school record in this event. Nliss Ramser has done a remarkable job, and we are looking forward to a topnotch team next year. 107 qflifft Row, Left to Riglztj Tom SITTON, CLIFF SHAW, BILL CERELLI, jimi O,NIAHONEY, PETE VVISE CSKCUHIII Row, Left to Riglzzj IVIATT SIMONOVITCH, BILL Tooxxiv, Wruuusx Licnr, Tom SMALLXVOOD, Bois UPTON QThird Row, Left to Riightj jon QUARA'r1zLLA, BARRY BITILLER, Howie TAX'LOli, DoN WILKIE, FRANK VEST The Monogram Club is an organization composed of the athletes who have earned a letter in a major or minor sport either as a player or manager. The purpose of this organization is to develop in the students a growing ap- preciation of intercollegiate athletic competition and to promote a higher degree of cooperation among the athletes of Roanoke College. This year,s oliicers were president, Bruce Johnston, vice president, Howard Light, secretary, Jay Angelicog treasurer, VVarren Light. The lVIonogram Club has been very active this past year during which it sponsored the Homecoming Dance, the Spring VVeekend, the fifth annual Awards Banquet, and various other activities. MONOGRAM CLUB 108 HOCKEY The Varsity Hockey team under the direction of Coach Frances Ramser didn't prove as successful as they had hoped due to the loss of some of last year's letter Winners. However, the team started the year with a bang by defeating the Campus Characters. Again this year, they played well against the powerful Hollins and held them to a tie on the Hollins field but weren't quite so successful on their home field losing 4-2. Miss Ramser used as her nucleus, the following letter winners: Fran Pulis, co-captain, Sally Randolph, Carolyn Rakes, Jo Umbergerg Marcia Klingelg Ruth Stubbs, Georgia Crawford, co-captain, Florence Robey, and Sylvia W'ill. Two freshmen, Ellen Shaw and Sherry McDonald, rounded out the Varsity. lVIore credit was brought to Coach Ramser and the team when five members, Sally Randolph, Marcia Klingel, Fran Pulis, Sherry McDonald, and Carolyn Rakes were selected to represent Roanoke College on the Blue Ridge Teams.
