Hannon-Coordinator DEDI ATIO We, the graduating class of 1961, at Roanoke Catholic High School do hereby dedi- cate this issue of the ge-yto our Coordinator, the Reverend John Patrick Hannan. To Father Hannan, we offer this thank you, a mite in comparison to all that he has done for us and our Alma Mater. The students of R.C.H., especially the seniors, will always remember how he show- ed us the right way in life, firmly, but with a personal interest in each and every one of us and was never too busy to listen to our suggestions and entreaties. Like Saint Paul, his first emphasis is always on the things of the spirit. Under his supervision and guidance, the standards of Roanoke Catholic High have risen even higher. We are confident that the years to come will see a bigger, newer, and better building and greater advantages because of the work of our first Coordinator. It is with utmost sincerity and gratitude that we dedicate our annual to Father Hannan and beg God's blessings on him for the years to come. 5 FOREWORD This 1961 edition of the Key salutes at once the old and the new R.C.H. We, the Senior Class, offer a glance at both in this year's annual. The forthcoming pages unfold nostalgic memories for all of us. The halls and classrooms of our old building will ring with echoes of talk, laughter, and prayer. The Walls will always radiate the warmth and friendliness we have found there. Nowabeautiful new school is rising from our beloved grounds, a wonderful structure with large classrooms and well-equipped laboratories. Soon it will be as cherished as the old, for its pupils and faculty will carry their warmth and humor into it. God's blessing be upon both for all time! You will have grateful memory of the devotion of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth who have shared with you not only their knowledge, but their lives. You will carry with you a strong Cetholic'Faith, which has been nourished and strengthened, not only by the courses in religion, but by the whole atmosphere of your school. ln your hearts will be a profound gratitude for your parents, for the Priests, as well as for the Sisters who have made possible the Catholic education which you cherish and which has fitted you for a successful life in this world, and as pointed out to you, the way to eternal happiness in the next. advantage of the splendid facilities which are planned for the new build ing which will be under construction as you depart.7 They will enjoy more modern and more commodious facilities, and it is hoped that they will have a fine spirit which you have exemplified during your high school days. That spirit will enable you to rejoice in their good fortune. Because of the fine Christian education which you have received, more will be expected of you than of others who have not been so favored. So, y hope and prayer for you is that you always live up to the wonder- ful example of the dedicated lives of your teachers, as well as to the profound religious truths which they imparted to you, and that you will be active in the lay apostolate, which will bring blessing not only on your own lives, but on the lives of others to whom you give good example and whom you mey be privileged to help. So, as you prepare to leave Roanoke Catholic High School, I beg the blessing of Almighty God upon you that you may have good, long, holy years in God's grace. Devotedly yours in Christ, JANE .S mmm! You go to college or into business. The school will soon move into a new building. The nation is under a new administration. The world recognizes new countries. In the changing times you have an important position. You are to help form and mold the new. Your Catholic schooling has given you eternal principles and formed virtuous habits. We, the class of '61 will remember always with great affection our lively and lovable principal, Sister Cornelius. Her delightful charm, sparkling wit, and Bostonian accent have made her beloved to all. Sister came to us in the fall of 1959. Born in Boston, Mass., she was graduated from Nazareth College and did post-graduate work at Xavier University in Cincinnati and the Catholic University in Washington. Besides her duties as principal, Sister teaches Senior Government, French, and Latin. For the ensuing pages we owe her a debt of gratitude, for without her help they would not have been possible. Her patience and devotionto everyone at R.C.H. is a wonderful example of the Mary- like qualities she possesses. We will never forget you Sister, and we can never thank you enough for being, above all else, our friend. 12 Reverend John P. Hannan Sister Cornelius, S.C.N. Reverend Vincent L. Campi 0UH. E me 03,15 Rom Linle, corns row The Class of '65 has been and will continue to be a mission-minded class. We have taken an enthusiastic lead over our upper classmen in the C.S.M.Cp. Stamp Drive. This project is our major goal for the year and the winner at the end of this drive received a bulletin board for the classroom. Our social activities have entailed such agenda as a sub-freshmen repre- sentative to the homecoming court and a good showing on the Junior Varsity cheerleading squad. We are proud of our girls! The year held many exciting prospects, for example, the establishment of a chapter of the Junior Red Cross. This project included the making of miscel- laneous items for the men and women at the Veterans Administration Hospital. All in all, our sub-freshmen classes have had an active and enthusiastic year. 15 Class Officers Sub-frosh A3 President, Clare Duetschg Vice President, Diane Diamond Cabsentlg Secretary, Anna Marie Humphreys, Treasurer, Mike McDonald, Student Council, Barbara Bentley. I' As the Freshman class brings to a close its second year at Roanoke Catholic High School, we will carry with us many wonderful memories of the past year. When we entered R.C.H. in 1959, we were distinguished as having been the first sub-freshman class at our school and also as the largest to enroll. The boys and girls were very busy in extra-curricular activities. All belonged to the C.Y.C. and have been initiated into the Catholic Students Mission Crusade and have worked hard in both groups. The girls as well as the boys, were very eager to participate in the sports offered them. We will remember this freshman year as one of the hardest studying but also one of enjoyment and fruitfulness. 23 M . -s Freshmen Ag President, Franny Surkamerg Vice Presidentg Mercedez Perezg Secretary Treasurer, David Marting Student Council, JoAnn Milan. In November seven were made probationary members ofthe Pacelli Chapter of the National Honor Society. Many of the sophomore boys participated in football and took active parts on both basketball squads. However, the boys were not the only sports-minded students! The sophomore girls were members ofboth girls' basketball teams and one is a cheerleader. The Glee Club counted many sophs as its members and one of them, the accompanist. Sophomores entered projects in the annual Science Fair. At Christmas time both class rooms filled baskets. Seven sophomores are in Senior Girl Scout Troop 16, who are Fairy Godmothers to the boys at St. Vincent's. The sophomore class is looking forwardto its remaining years at Roanoke Catholic High. They hope to live upto the standards which their predecessors have laid down before them. 35 an T N CLASS 0F 1963 SOPHOMORE I: T r e as u r e r , J o hn Carrollg Secretary, Judy Hedrickg Vice-President, Charles Boushg President, Cathie Kramer. We've had our hands full taking care of studies and other activities instituted by our new school system. The biggest and best thing, of course, was the prom, which we were very proud to sponsor. We also showed ourselves well by having five of our students in the honor society, being active inall school activities, producing five of the school's eight cheerleaders, and by proving to be the mainstay of the football team. Starting with our Freshman yearwe have been well represented in sports. In that same year we sponsored the Harvest Dance which was very successful. In both our Freshman and Sophomore years we have had not only school but regional winners in the science fair. To top everything off we willbe the first seniors to graduate from our new school. Our girls will also be the first seniors to wear the school uniform. We are anxiously looking forward to becoming the seniors at R.C.H., but we know we will always be able to look back fondly on the great junior year. 43 0F 1962 President, Billy Andrews, Vice President, Edith Piedmont, Secretary, Michael Carroll, Treasurer, Ed Sneed. To us, this ring is a symbol of glorious memories of hard work, tears and laughter. I know all of us remember the mixed feelings we experienced on our first day in high school. We strived so hard to make a good impression by sitting straight in our desks with our hands neatly folded. Surrounding us on that first day was a veil of tension until a bold sophomore wrote Welcome, Frosh on the blackboard. Our freshman year passed quickly into the sophomore. Hops, dates, football and basketball games filled our days along with our scholastic efforts. Before we knew it we were writing essay after essay for our sensational junior teacher. Will we ever forget the night of our Junior Prom! After all our savings and work, we looked with pride at the shining results. Finally, the day of all days came when we received our coveted rings. No one but a senior can know the feeling of accomplishment one experiences at this time. This year passed quickly and gra- duation night found us solemn with the realization that we were leaving our old school. But, we will never forget it, nor can anything be as exciting and interesting as our high school days. 53 V P4-iiwrf amd- 2 , W fwa -W M,-W 7 5 5 ww' WVU T 4 w ' M si ,W-of Q. ,ff wwau.-1 WN f f 1 Q If 5 5 5 3, f 3 1 mf i 1' L 1 Come Holy Spirit, Snligmen Gut Minds A 0 mv 945306909536 , i 6613661090988 JERRY AGEE SAMMY ASSAID Football 1,2,3,45 Basketball 1,25 Track 25 Basketball Manager 1,25 J.A. 2,3,45 ROJAC 45 Who Wouldn't Be Crazy 35 C.Y.C. l,2,3,45 F.B.L.A. 3,45 Glee Club 3,45 Science Fair 2,45Altar Boy 1,2,3,45 Christmas Pageant 1,3,45 Class Treasurer 3,45 Sports Editor C.S.M.C. 4. Qua- lity matched quantity in the wide range of exhibits, the result of effort, research and planning. Seven specialists from the scientific and educational field were invited to evaluate the pro- jects and select winners. Con- current With this judging, re- presentatives oftheVirginia Society of Professional Engineers rated dis pl ay s and nominated winners for their special awards. Five projects were selected from the Winners to represent R .C .H.S. at the Regional Fair held at Roanoke College. Q A OUR FIGHTING IRISH IV 'xlg Coach Vince Shedwell Practice makes perfect and our fighting Irish soon learned that this was true and proved it with results. With Coaches Vince Shedwell and Ray Lucas to lead them, the team practiced hard and had a fine season to show for it. Backed by the Athletic Association, cheerleaders, students, and Faculty, the teams had plenty of support. After losing to Cave Spring in the opener, 31-O, the Irish fought back with new vigor. Following a loss to William Byrd, 25-0, the Irish scored their first points of the season in another loss to Altavista. Undis- couraged, the team looked good in the next game, but lost to a powerful Notre Dame team before a home crowd, 7-0. Craving for a victory, the Irish fans were elated by the team's next game where they stomped Valley High of Hot Springs, 21-0. After losing a close one to Central of Lowmoor, 18-14, before a Homecoming crowd, the boys whipped Brook- ville, 24-0, in the following game. After a hard-fought-tie with a much stronger Lord Boutetourt team, the Irish again battled to a tie, 12-12, with Appomatox on the last away-game of the season. Returning home, they licked Pembroke in good style, 21-14, to finish a great season. Nice going boys! se Q N In . And it was this spirit which cheered on the R.C.H. team during the long winter months. Under Coach Pete Wiggins, the boys practiced hard and managed to pull a few welcome victories from their determined opponents. Irish fans saw this spirit in the pregame pep rallies led by the school cheer- leaders, in the hallway buzz just before the boys left on a road trip. But most of all, our spirit showed itself in the roar of the fans during the heat of a hard-fought game as the Irish charged down court to dunk another two-pointer. This year likewise proved to be one of invaluable experience for the up-and-coming players whowillbecome, in a few years, our Irish Varsity. We all hope the Irish Spirit will grow with the new school and see abetter and better Irish team with more and more Irish victories. Congratulations to the team and best of luck to the young boys in the future! 91 Coach Pete Wiggins 1960 - 1961 We They Brookville 43 46 X Cave Spring 39 58 Q tk William Byrd 34 36 A Lord Boutetourt 50 55 ,N Benedictine 40 45 f I Central 54 36 Cave Spring 47 ' 69 Trinitarian Seminary 50 54 Fishburne Military 64 82 Covington Boys' Home 45 33 Covington Boys' Home 71 37 Cathedral 39 50 Benedictine 65 89 Lord Boutetourt 59 69 Central 64 28 Q. THE TEAM AS A WHOLE Mrs. William Berry, a newpersonality at Roanoke Catholic this year, coached our varsity and junior varsity girls' basketball teams. The season included participation in the City League against Jef- ferson, Andrew Lewis, William Byrd, and William Fleming, by both Varsity and JV. The highlight of the season was the annual Knights of Columbus Tournament in Richmond, February 24-26. A rol- licking time was had by all. Underlying this year's games were many hours of strenuous practice. After several unfortunate games, the players were found dreaming of luscious hamburgers, but more realistically munching on orange rinds. Our thanks to Mrs. Berry for all she has done for R.C.H. and may her succeeding years be filled with success and happiness. 97 THE IRISH COLLEENS OF R.C.H.
