Football Squad . . 1957 - ... The 1957 Roanoke Catholic High foot- ball team was brought to life in the middle of August. Under the careful guidance of head coach, John Monaghan, and line coach, Leon Briggs, the team prepared it- self for the heavy season, Financial aid was given to the team by the newly formed R. C. H. Athletic Association. On September l3, the lrish took the Galax field only to find the offensive of the strong opponent superior for that night. We lost 26-O, The following Altavista and Radford games also found Catholic unable to produce a touchdown. Finally, on Thursday, October 3, in Vic- tory Stadium, the lrish made a touchdown in the Valley High game with Barry Thomas scoring from the 25 yard line in o sleeper play , but this lone touchdown was not enough to top Valley's l3 points. On Sun- day, October l3, the lrish faced the Cru- saders of Norfolk Catholic High. The team, all keyed up after weekend activities, would never settle down to playing ball, so lost another game, 6-O. The lrish looked as if they had reached their potential after tying Hillsville 6-6, with Jimmy Welsh scoring on an end run. The lrish lost to Franklin High the next week, but then come back on Friday, No- vember 2, to tie Troutville O-Ol The iniury-ridden team played its last game of '57 with Cave Spring, in Victory Stadium. Throughout the entire season, the famous words of Coach Monaghan echoed through the locker rooms, l just can't understand why that blank reverse won't work. If it would only work, we would go all the way. l
