Their deep roots, their common bond, lie hidden without the assistance ot the Holy Ghost. He alone can scale the heights to God and stir the embers ot love that too otten grow cold in the world To learn without Him is error to live without Him is death He makes all truth to glitter and all love to glow Only an ignorant world tries to survive away from Him May your devotion to the Holy Ghost be an integral part ot your lite God bless you Fa thtully in Christ Most Rev Joseph H Hodges Auxiliary Bishop ot Richmond QQ-K Most Reverend Joseph H Hodges Auxiliary Bishop of Richmond 'EM vb vi c AS umiw 'ic X145 317 'T 53 's ' . g . 5 ' ' , .L l , . Aluly v......,,,c Trail Blazers fl ww At the last meeting of the Parent- Teacher Association, the Juniors presented a program featuring the award winners in the fields of Religion, English, history, science and business. The competition for some of these awards was city-wide, for others, state-wide. The success of the stu- dents in these scholastic endeavors pleased the teachers and delighted the parents. Before the meeting opened, colorful pos- ters showing names of winners, the prizes won, as well as the field ofthe award, were attractively arranged around the hall. Pinkie and Paula really showed their ar- tistic touch in these posters. Paul Belmont was the emcee of the eve- ning, he very capably held the attention of everyone, not only because of his pleasing personality, but because of the number and variety of awards announced. On these pages we have pictured a few of the winners. Would that it were possible to present the full story of a heart warming night. 1957-58 -R. C. H. lll Freshmen and display on Christian Reading. The 1957 Roanoke Catholic High foot- ball team was brought to life in the middle of August. Under the careful guidance of head coach, John Monaghan, and line coach, Leon Briggs, the team prepared it- self for the heavy season, Financial aid was given to the team by the newly formed R. C. H. Athletic Association. On September l3, the lrish took the Galax field only to find the offensive of the strong opponent superior for that night. We lost 26-O, The following Altavista and Radford games also found Catholic unable to produce a touchdown. Finally, on Thursday, October 3, in Vic- tory Stadium, the lrish made a touchdown in the Valley High game with Barry Thomas scoring from the 25 yard line in o sleeper play , but this lone touchdown was not enough to top Valley's l3 points. On Sun- day, October l3, the lrish faced the Cru- saders of Norfolk Catholic High. The team, all keyed up after weekend activities, would never settle down to playing ball, so lost another game, 6-O. The lrish looked as if they had reached their potential after tying Hillsville 6-6, with Jimmy Welsh scoring on an end run. The lrish lost to Franklin High the next week, but then come back on Friday, No- vember 2, to tie Troutville O-Ol The iniury-ridden team played its last game of '57 with Cave Spring, in Victory Stadium. Throughout the entire season, the famous words of Coach Monaghan echoed through the locker rooms, l just can't understand why that blank reverse won't work. If it would only work, we would go all the way. l 1958 . .
