Novigotor Quartermaster to the Helm! is an order which indicates that the ship requires accurate and skillful control. Accuracy is the Watch-word of the Quartermaster, he checks chrono- meters to the nearest half-second by radio signal, compasses to the nearest tenth of a degree by the sun, time differences to the nearest micro-second by LORAN. Location, time, distance and speed are the essence of Navigation. On the bridge, in the pilot house and chart room, the Quartermaster carries out the function of guiding the ship across Wide oceans and through narrow rock-bound channels to safe haven. He stands endless Watches, forever cheking compass, course, fathometer and position, maintaining always a complete minute-to-minute record of the ship's actions and activities as Well as the weather and states of sea encountered. It is the Quartermaster who tends flags and pennants, and our national symbols, as Well as assisting with honors and ceremonies at sea and in port.
