MARINE DETACHMENT As on the first ships of the U. S. Navy, the ROANOKE has its Marine Detachment. On the modern Ship ot the Line, Marines serve as order- lies and sentries as well as manning the guns and providing an honor guard when the occasion arises. They are equipped and trained to serve as a nucleous of the ship's landing party.
