Whether carried weii or pooriy, age invoives memories of the past, however distant. Thus we attempt to record in these pages some of the age of a fighting ship at a time when we were her voice, in order that the memories will not he dimmed hy the passage of years. This Cruise Booiz wiii reiate the history of six months, hut first delves hriefiy into that which has gone hetore. Born of the need for additionai fighting ships of the line, the construction of a new iight cruiser was authorized hy Congress in Iune ot1934. Then for eieven years pians were drawn, ship huiiders worized and eventually a war was fought. Finally, in June ot1947, Miss Julia Ann Henehry, daugh- ter ot the Mayor of Roanoke, Virginia, christened the USS ROANOKE CCL-1455. Qur ship siid down the ways of the New Yoriz Ship Building Company in Camden, New Jersey, and made the short trip to Philadelphia for outtitting at the Naval Shipyard. Almost two years iater, on April 4, 1949, she was dedicated hy the new Secretary of Defense, Louis Iohnson, in his first puhiic appearance as a Cahinet memher. She was Hthe last word in her ciassnp she was now in her element, never again was she to he unattended. The ROANCKE spent her tiedgiing years as a memher of the greatest peacetime Navy ever known, operating in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Carihhean areas. Gradually the fine edge of preparedness was molded and she moved to surpass her oider sisters of the line. For three years the ROANCKE placed second in the Atlantic Fleet hattie efficiency competi- tion, and finally in 1955 the most coveted prize, first piace, came ahoard. But the changing worid situation had created the need for readjustment of the major fleet units. In the fail of 1955 the Panama Canal was transit- ted, the hiue water of the Atiantic was shai-zen from her plates and the chaiienge was Hung to the ships of the Pacific Fleet--'an an-out assault was launched for the first ranizing in the wide Pacific. Thus came to pass a few months of overhaul at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, and weeks of training oft the western coast of the United States. When the preparation was complete, this maiden cruise to the orient hegany the age was ours. Dedication? the ROANOKE ...We'll never forget her .,,,,Q: . . , v ' f- HK -1 -2 f.-, . - .. J THE SAGA OF ESTHER One of the numerous visitors aboard ROANOKE during our Far East Cruise, and certainly the best known, was Esther. Esther came into being in 1942 aboard an Australian destroyer, when one officer wrote a passionate inscription across a publicity photograph of Esther Williams, and hung it in the wardroom. In 1946, he was transferred to a cruiser and took the picture with him. Later that year, the Aussie cruiser was assigned to occupation duty in Japan, and the real saga of Esther began. For two years the struggle for Esther was carried on between officers of the Aust- ralian, Canadian, New Zealand and British Navies. ln 1948, the US Navy entered the fray and Esther has since been aboard most of our ships deployed to WESTPAC. The rules of the game are few, but are sufficient to prevent mass murder, while only slightly discouraging mayhem. Only officers may participate. Esther must be displayed in plain sight in the wardroom, she may not be welded to the bulkhead, and firearms cannot be used. yr? Al ,. K of-,J . Esther first came aboard ROANOKE when Lieutenants Breen and Carlson rowed a motor launch across India Basin to the USS CAVALLARO in the small hours of a dark and rainy night, sneaked aboard undetected, slipped into the wardroom, siezed Esther and fled into the night, their brilliant feat soon to be announced to the long- suffering 0.0.D's who didn't know what they were in for. BUT ALAS . .. The heroes of the epic admire their handy work... . r.. the newly created Esther Medal is bestowed. -W-Ulu Perhaps the most galling incident of the entire saga of Esther was her theft from the mighty ROANOKE by two officers of the USS AMPERE QADG-lll-six omcers embarked. Dressed as enlisted men and using liberty cards signed by 'RADM Atom Smasher, USSR , they came aboard ROANOKE about 2300 one early September evening. The O. O. D. stopped them on suspicion that they had been ashore on a duty day, and turned them over to the quartermaster who took their liberty cards and told them to go below. An obliging M.A.A. showed them to the I Division compartment while another good shipmate helped them locate themselves on the damage control diagrams in No. 2 messing compartment. Awaiting on the forecastle, they sat forward of turret l until OlOO when they went below to the wardroom, seized Esther, and succeeded in leaving the ship via the after brow. But alas, the AMPERE too was doomed to failure in keeping Esther's aFfections, and in the wake of typhoon Emma she moved on to be fought over by a group of minesweepers. ..and receive the proper recognition when Retaliation was the watch word... and THIS is the schedule of events that led to her return' 1300--Pre-planning conference. 1400-Planning conference-drew up plans 'A', 'B' and 'C . 1500-Post-planning conference. 1600 1700 1800 1900 2000 2100 2200 2300 2400 0030 0045 0050 0051 0052 0053 0100 0101 0110 0150 -Preliminary pre-Esther recovery detail brief- ing in number two messing compartment for Esther raiding party, bell captains, key plotting personnel and safety observers. -Pre-Esther recovery detail briefing. -Esther recovery detail briefing. -Post-Esther recovery briefing. -Final Esther recovery briefing. -One last briefing. -Set Condition Il in all Esther raiding stations. -Manned all Esther stations. -Called away it 3 motor launch, coxswain- LT Breen, engineer--ENS Willcott, bowhook -LTJG Gobel, sternhook-lst Lt Rose, navigator-LT R. On Sunday night, October 28, two officers from the USS BOXER came aboard, looking for a friend. One of them was escorted to the wardroom by the messenger, grabbed Esther, raced topside and threw her to his companion on the pier, but Esther went into her element-the water. She was retrieved by the brow sentry and returned aboard. Shortly thereafter, the Executive Officer of the BOXER, accompanied by several omcers, came aboard and claimed Esther on a technical foul-allegedly an enlisted man had participated in her defense. During the argument, he picked up Esther, walked out of the wardroom and dashed down the brow. An alert .l.0.0.D., ENS Willcott, cut him down with a flying tackle. ENS Cremo and LTJG Murphy joined in and Esther was once more rescued. The lines were drawn, however, and battle soon rejoined. The Exec. from the BOXER called out every officer aboard, and soon had mustered 80 on the quarterdeck! These 80, followed by T6 more, returned to the ROANOKE and launched an all-out frontal assualt. The undermanned duty section, numbering T2 officers, put up a magnificent struggle, but were soon over- whelmed by sheer weight of numbers, and Esther was carried off by brute force. X T A prisoner was taken during the battle, and for a while the ROANOKE's luxurious brig had a guest. Eventually he was returned to the BOXER under guard and all the Esther mementos were passed on to the victor. Looking back the bruises may have seemed hardly worthwhile, but unsuspected qualities of valor and loyalty had been uncovered. qi A last maior Replenishment exercise is con- ducted-and the ROANOKE prepares an attack on the previous time record The lines are over-here comes the food!! plenty of supervision xX.,. .Xi-N No new record is set, but the time wos close. In peacetime, our primary mission is to train for those wartime missions. The Gunnery Department bears the maior responsibility for manning the armament of our ship, and training to obtain the fine edge of excellence that has been the mark of ROANOKE in both Atlantic and Pacific Battle Efficiency com- petitions. The six E's displayed in the main Bat- tery, the striking of target triggered bursts seen when the Secondary Battery fires at a small drone, the 'locked on' reports from the directors-all of this is concrete evidence of the state of readiness and performance of the gunners and fire-controlmen of this light cruiser. ff ? ,g l la x ll EE P A it QM ' r' sl , 'I Z .. When you hear us fire a 21 gun salute at precise five second intervals, watch our helicopter rise from the fantail, see a drone catapulted into the air, ride in one of our boats as you go on liberty-then you are obser- ving the Gunnery Department in action as much as when the guns are firing, radars acquiring targets or the main deck being scrubbed to its usual state of cleanliness. We consumed 81,904 candy bars, 182,850 packs of cigarettes and, of course, don't forget the huge demands required to meet that all important chow call. 2 Q tl iw 0 U K , N Z z 5 X X '- Q -'bfxgtkq isi s' J ' wi- Miiyfi, f ssfisxr 4 J w 3 J F Supply Officer LCDR Creel OF THE MANY JOBS IN SUPPLY MOST CREW MEMBERS VOICE CONCERN ABOUT FOOD Out of the reefers comes the food . . . ...into the hands of the cooks of Delicious IIMLLYIIC, but 5111611575 the garbage.'.' lf X WW 9 Our daily bread . .. ......,,,,,m My K X M1 X fiij jk ao x-7 W W f , A f Z QA X if 5 f , , 1.33- jg J Cf? The business manager takes our cut. EDITOR LT B. R. INMAN BUSINESS MANAGER LT R. P. HILTON It is fitting that the last words remain to the harried editor, in order that praise may be duly bestowed, and the blame shifted elsewhere. Much effort has gone into these pages and many have contributed of their time . ..and here we take space to thank those few who gave many of their hours: to Lieutenant Bob Hilton, not only for his outstanding iob of financing the book through various schemes, but also for his encouragement, sympathy and assistance in the actual composition of the book...to PH3 Don Marks who cheerfully gave up many of his hours of liberty in the constant struggle to supply the portrait of a cruise...to JO3 Bob Grueter and PFC John Coleman for their valued assistance on layouts and their restraining hands on some of the wilder caption ideas...to Seaman Whittenhagen for assistance on the photographic coverage . . .to Ensign Herb Smetheram for assistance in proofreading...to Mr. Suga of Toppan who supervised the printing...to Lieutenant Len Coates who scouted for pictures and kept the money coming from bingo. . .the Iist could go on and on. Separate mention must go to three young men: Tronstad, Rameriz and MacDonald. Tronstad designed the cover and the insert pages, MacDonald did the fly leafs, and together with Rameriz, the cartoons spread throughout the book. In these pages we have attempted to tell the story of six months in photographs with terse comment, and with a minimum of deathless prose. Unlike modern novels, the daily language of the salty sailor has not yet become popular in Cruise Books, and we shied away from blazing any new trails.-And the blame...I don't know, Mac, but it didn't happen on my watch!
