M iss Virginia Wilson, Mr. Tilman Smith, Principal 2 I I I I., .1 I I I I A Challenge to the Class of 1945 We, the seniors and graduates of 1944, leave a challenging thought to the juniors. Though our abilities were not of the greatest nor were om' attempts 'mall smashing successes, we tried to honestly carry our responsibilities. The obligations we were to assume we handled as ably as we could. We found, in the fall of 1943, that our newly acquired responsibility of being the oldest and the pace setters in school, was by no means an easy one. Because we were seniors we were obliged to take positions of importance and to reach decisions by the application of clear thought and good judg- ment. ' Our class was little different from other senior classes and your senior class of '45 will probably not differ greatly either. The highly regarded and reputable standards of our school must never be lowered. We, as hundreds of other Roanoke High school graduates, have accepted and fulfilled the responsibility of being seniors. So, to you seniors of 1945, take up the challenge and accept with pride, the responsibilities of leadership which will be yours next year and carry on in the best tradition of our alma mater. CRAVENS Physical education: industrial arts, sponsor of the senior class for four years. Senior News We have reached the end. That is, we have completed our eight years of grade school and four years of high school and are now ready to start out in the big, wide World. l ' During our twelve years we have accomplished much but, to be truthful, I think we have accomplished more this last year than ever before. We can now take things at a faster pace. All of our classes have sped right along. Every class has been fun as well as educational. I suppose you recall some of Scherer's antics which I've related in previous senior news columns. He is still busy with his wise-cracks, although he has lost his partner, Joey, at least for the time being, as Joey is with the Militia, fighting the flood waters. Kenny Bachman is also on flood duty. We all hope they get home to receive their diplomas. Soon no one will be able to complain about the offensive and evil odors of chemistry for we will store the equipment, odors and all, for the summer to be left for the oncoming chemistry class. We wish them as much luck as we have had and also the fun. L Some of the girls are really speedy in shorthand now-why, some are nearly as good as John Robert Gregg himself, and have you seen those fancy certificates some of the girls are flashing around! The typing class is really going to town with their speed, et cetera. Of course, regardless of what we Seniors do, we always do it exceedingly well. We wouldn't be Seniors if we didn't. Would we? Mr. Smith has finally reached the conclusion that the members of his Sociology class read nothing in the newspapers but the funnies. He asked us the other day how many had been keeping up with a certain event of importance-well, to be frank, no one admitted ever reading of it. Outside of that, of course, we are all right. We have finished our Sociology book and last semester we finished our Economics books. In bookkeeping we started the year by working simple problems, and worked up until we are doing regular business practice. One of the things enjoyed most was working on our practice sets. They gave us an idea as to the things we would have to do if Working in an office. The girls out- numbered the boys 15-2, but all in all we got along very well. Senior Play, Bargain Bride' The Senior play was a rolliky, laugh-packed, three-act show. Those in the cast were Jerry Sauder, Winifred Martin, Rosemary Wilson, Jack Sauder, Virginia Priller, Ann Blunier, Janice Brown, Mildred Rocke, Betty Walker, Donna Schirer, and Joey Bussone. - Jerry Sauder, as a girl, stole the hearts of at least fifty of the male audience. The play consisted of one merry mix-up after another. First the boys have to be married by the end of the day in order to obtain their rightful share of some money. Their regular girl friends turn them down because they believed the boys were only interested in obtain- ing the money. To settle matters, Jimmy Smith CJerryJ consents to be attired as a girl and passed off first as his own wife, then his roommate, Dex's CJackl wife, and then as a sister to Dex. 11 One hilarious scene was Aunt Oma from Omaha wanting Jim Uerryl to try on a slip she had purchased for Daisy tJerryJ as a wedding present. The girls came back to accept the boys but by this time everyone is so mixed up as to who Daisy is that the girls nearly leave again. This time Jim saved the situation by taking off his wig. Cissie's father is visiting the girls and falls for Daisy and then Aunt Oma really dresses herself up and vamps Cissie's father back again, as he was once her old flame. The love mix-ups are straightened out and the play has a happy, jovial ending. Class History Our introduction to school life came in 1932-the year of the great depression. Most of us entered Roanoke Grade school with Miss McC1eary as our teacher, although a number entered the various rural schools the same year. The membership at the Grade School was as follows: Eugene Audi, Jos Bussone, Lloyd DeJohn, Norman Funk, Ernest Huschen, Louis Lepret, Charles Mangold, Robert McEldoWney Tom Paluska, Victor Randour, Jack Sauder, Gerald Sauder, Robert Scherer, Eugene Warren, Eliza Kistner, Annette Pioletti, Georgette Pretet, Virginia Priller, Irma Randour, Goldie Schuler, Harriet 'i hommen, Betty Walker, Ann Wallace, Richard Schoon, Melvin Bohn. Of the 25 original class members, 15 are graduating. During our second year we lost five members but gained two. We lost Ernest Huschen, Louis Depret, Richard Schoon, Melvin Bohn, and Lloyd DeJohn. Those coming into our class were Joyce Mayes and Harry Ulrich. In our third year we again gained two new members-Leo Blottiaux and Nelson Schackerbauer, and lost Harry Ulrich at the end of the year. Our fourth year Janice Brown, Robert McAttee, Howard Jones and Lewis Jones came and we lost Joyce Mayes. The Jones boys dropped out at the end of the year. Our fifth year was an uneventful year as we neither gained nor lost, although we did advance upstairs-a great event in our lives. The next year Victor and Irma Randour moved away and we also lost Leo Blottiaux and Nelson Schackerbauer. We added Rufus Small, Junior Ratliffe and Louis Rathbun. ' In the seventh grade, Velma Blunier, Heye Harms, and June Wilson were added. During our eighth year we gained Dorothy Martin, and the Randour twins, Irma and Victor came back, only to leave again in October. This year we elected our first class officers. They were Tom Paluska, president, Jerry Sauder, vice presidentg Goldie Schuler, secretary, and Joe Bussone, treas- urer. Our cheer leaders were Janice Brown and Robert McEldoWney. Then came the day we had long been waiting for-our enrollment in High school. There were twenty-four from town school and the following from country schools: Kenneth Bachman, East Harmony, Everett Bauman, Schertzg Ann Blun- ier, Pleasant Valleyg Don Gudeman, Willow Tree: Winifred Martin, Maple 12 Lawn, Irma Pfister, Maple Lawn, Donna Schirer, Schirerg Vernon Springer, Pleasant Valley, Rosemary Wilson, Willow Tree. Our freshman officers were: President, Joe Bussoneg vice president, Nor- man Funkg secretary, Janice Browng treasurer, Velma Blunier. During our freshman year we made some educational trips. Mr. Wiles took us to Starved Rock, Springfield, and to a Cement Mill. Another ex- pedition was taken up Mount Jumbo to see the sun rise. We were one of the last classes allowed to make these trips, because of war restrictions. One of the things we will remember most about our trips, was when Charlie Mangold accidentally caught his breeches on a rock near the cement bill. The occasion called for a new pair of pants. You should have seen how lovely he looked in his new overalls! The first part of the year Vernon Springer left and at the end of the year Velma Blunier and Robert McAttee moved away. Our sophomore officers were: President, Jerry Sauder, vice president, Ann Wallaceg secretary, Charles Mangold, treasurer, Goldie Schuler. 'l'he first part of the year we lost Eugene Audi and from Eureka came Gene Fehr and Mildred Rocke. Our junior year was filled with a great many events. We first elected officers and they Were: President, Tom Paluskag vice president, Virginia Prillerg secretary, Ann Blunier, treasurer, Janice Brown. Then came our Junior play, The Sunshine Twins, which was a great success. ' 'i'he big event of the year was the Junior-Senior banquet. We worked hard to make the banquet a success for the seniors. We also got our class rings and pins which We were very proud of. This year we lost three boys, Joey, Tom, and Norman, who became apprentices at Caterpillar, with the understanding that when they com- pleted their four-year course, they would receive their High school diploma. We also lost Everett Bauman, Junior Ratliffe, and Gene Fehr. Our last year in school has been the most important and worthwhile year in school. 'lhis year was filled with exciting events, such as the Senior play, Bargain Bride, getting our pictures taken, selecting our invitations and cards, being guests at the Junior-Senior banquet, and re-electing Mr. Cravens as our class adviser for the fourth term. The senior year we lost Rufus Small and Heye Harms. Joey came back, and at the end of the year Ruth Sebree came from Alba, Missouri. Joey has been busy making up the work he missed in his junior year so that he can graduate with his class. Tom has had one four-rnonth college term and with those credits and some from night school he will have sufficient credits to graduate. Robert McEldowney joined the Marines and left April 16, but he will receive his diploma in abscentia. After four years of hard work Donna Schirer has earned the honor of being valedictorian, and Irma Pfister salutatorian. On May 14 our baccalaureate service was held with Rev. Rodney Shaw as speaker. Our class class took place May 15 with talent from the class participating. Our graduation took uplace on the evening of May 16, with Carl S. Win- ters of Oak Park, Ill., delivering the commencement address. 13 Senior Class Will-1944 We, the class of 1944, being of sound mind, superhuman understanding, intelligence beyond all human comprehension, having acting initiative and ability which to this night, May 15, has remained unsurpassable, do hereby ordain, bequeath and grant to posterity these 27 separate and distinct wills and testanients, making null and void all threats, statements, wills or prom- ises made prior to this evening. The Class of 1944 leaves to Mr. Cravens our comfort and understanding thoughts to be used when faced with the many trying circumstances, and unhappy hours of future years without us and also our deepest sympathy for the large vacancy left in his heart when we leave. 1 Class of 1944 leaves to the freshmen our strength of character, solemn dignity, good looks, charming manners, sweet, loving dispositions, and remarkable intellectual ability. To the sophomores we bequeath our superb judgment, originality, cheer- fulness, cooperativeness, bright shining faces, good conduct in class, pep and loyalty, and influence over the teachers. To our beloved faculty, as a whole, we leave all our amazing knowledge and startling information we have furnished them from time to time on our various examination papers. Charles Mangold leaves his speedy step and quick alert ways to Miss Rutledge who is sooo slow. To Mr. Smith-the hope that in some future year he will again have the honor of teaching as distinguished a class as ours has been. To Miss Wilson-ability to work up a temper and still remain pale and fair while doing so. The Chemistry class will to Pop their ability to break test tubes, explode gas, shatter bottles and 'make the most unpleasant odors imaginable. To Mr. Webb we bequeath our unanimous musical ability. To Mrs. Springer, the girls leave their short dresses, and tons of hoard- ed unchewed gum. John Martino-our consideration in dropping scraps of paper, candy, erasers, et cetera, in only dark inaccessible places. To Alene Zimmerman, the typing class, wills the ability to type seven thousand words withouth even one error. To the building we will all of our marks of art in the shapes of pencil marks, initials, and pin marks, and scratches on doors. The Class of 1944 leaves the school for good! Kenny Bachman leaves Alice Riggs foot loose and fancy free tat lastl. June Wilson: Ability to stay out late at night and still get to school on time to Jim Davis. Ann Blunier: Wills her cute, coy ways and soothing voice to Mary Lou Smith. Harriet Thommen leaves all her girlish glamour to Rita Nauman. Jack Sauder: Leaves his ability to run the mile to anyone who is dumb enough to accept it. Goldie Schuler: Wills her shortness to Herman Tjaden. Tom Paluska wills his money-making ability to Jim Leman, in the hopes that some day Jim will buy Neta a coke, 14 I To Myrtle O'Russa, who deserves a break, Anne Wallace wills her secret weapon which has aided her in holding that love 'em and leave 'em Rich Zimmerman. So, don't be surprised, when next year you see Myrtle and Rich before school, at noon, between classes and after school, gazing fondly into each others' eyes. Pvt. Robert McEldowney bequeaths his ability to entertain study hall by making faces and weird noises to Geneva Ulrich. Rosey Wilson leaves her ability as dirt-scraper-upper to the next author of What's Burning. Oh yes, and in case you didn't know, Rosey was the Little Red Hen too-the author of Chicken Feed, in 42-43. May 'I ask those seated beside Helen Hodel to sort of see that she doesn't rush up here and tear Rosey to pieces now that she knows who wrote a certain thing in a certain Inkwell. thing in a certain Inkwell. But why bring up the past!!! Ruth Sebree wills her high-pitched voice to Mrs. Springer so she can be heard over the noise immediately after the 6th hour study hall bell rings and therefore get everybody quieted down, at least before 1:15. Betty Walker wills her quietness and ability to come and go without making an issue of it-to Margaret Schuler. Jerry Sauder wills his ability to be friendly with everybody at all times to Phyllis LaConte and Grace Kistner, and just as a good-will gesture he leaves his basketball ability to John Fischer. Irma Pfister leaves her amazing ability to keep her work up to date, know all the answers, and get wonderful grades to Johnny Martin. We might add that Irma has plenty of night life too. Donna S. wills her feminine charm and strength to Peggy Wallace. Winnie Martin leaves her flaming hair to all the dishwater blondes in school. Janice Brown leaves her ability to lose weight to Malinda Hodel, and her enormous vocabulary to John Pioletti. Milly Rocke will her quiet, reserved manner to Neta Fauber and her tempestuous nature. Don Gudeman-his way with wimmin and dancing ability to Eddie Tuescher. Joey Bussone wills his dark, dashing, handsorneness to Billy Von Bret. Dot Martin wills her height, basketball ability, and gift of gab to Lena Rora. Robert Scherer leaves his bright remarks and 'Tm from Missouri technique to the next genius who enters school. Eliza Kistner wills her get 'em and hold em technique to Barbara Fischer. Georgette Pretet leaves her simplicity and child-like nature to Doris Santi. Virginia Priller wills her slender figure to Joanne Wilson. Annette Pioletti wills ner figure and Hwolflessness to Betty Hangartner. Last of all, the Seniors wish to leave this thought with all of you, Be it ever so humble there is no school like our own school. 15 Class Prophecy We hereby do prophesy that all of the following will take place no later than 10 years from this date-May 15, 1944. Kenny Bachman has grown a long curly mustache and sideburns to match, and is manager of the Mighty Secor Midgets baseball team. Ann Blunier Works for the Leman Hog Raising Company as secretary, and spends most of her time taking dictation from her perch on the boss' knee. After her last romance, which left her broken-hearted, Janice Brown is filling the highest position on the staff of the Roanoke Review, giving advice to the lovelorn in a column entitled The Voice of Experience. Tune in your radio to station USMC every morning at 1:30 a. m. and you will hear a familiar melancholy voice gurgling loudly and cooing softly like a mourning dove. It is none other than our own Private Robert McEl- downey enteiiaining the women Marines at his base in San Diego. Annette Pioletti is making personal appearances at army camps. She is Illinois' most famous jitterbug. Harriet Thommen was just married for the fourth time and is living with No. 4 and her ten freckled faced children in Cruger. June Wilson has become famous overnight. She can do the ballet, hula, and jazz wiggle at the same time and is now starring in the Martino Tulip Club. Ruth Sebree has graduated from a school of nursing and is on her Way to Europe, where she will not only play a heroic part innursing the soldiers' wounds, but will play a very important part in keeping up their morale by her kind motherly ways. A few weeks ago an elaborate party Was the talk of the town. It was the Coming Out Party of none other than Georgette Pretet who announced that since she is no longer kept busy with her school work she is seeking a social career. Jerry Sauder is in full charge of the Sauder Funeral Home as an under- taker. He is now undertaking the task of supporting his wife and a beau- tiful baby daughter who looks just like her father. Mildred Rocke has just accepted a position in Hawaii as Hula Queen instructor of Honolulu. I hear she is quite the wiggle type and has finally wiggled herself into her life's dream of going to Hawaii. Anne Wallace has finally settled down in Roanoke and is the proud mother of 7 crew-cut, bow-legged, and knock-kneed kids. She also does secretary work at the Zimmerman Dental Clinic in her spare time. Bob Scherer has finally made up his mind to be a fisherman and is doing a good job. I hear he finally caught a blonde one. Charles Mangold swings the hash and flips the flapjacks at a ritzy joint in Secor. He cuts hair as a sideline and I do mean sideline. He uses one of his bowls as a pattern. He just signed up Myrtle to be his head waitress. Joey Bussone has set up a laboratory and is diligently working to find a formula to get more miles out of gasoline so he can get from Roanoke to Bloomington at least twice a week. 16 If you are ever driving through Texas he sure to stop in at the 'Martin Slap Happy Dude Ranch. You will be entertained by that beautiful red- haired flame, Winnie Martin, and her guitar. Her exquisite music has brought all the wolves to Texas. Jack Sauder has just been appointed Secretary of Agriculture. He was appointed upon his merit and also because of his super-natural hog calling voice. Donnie Gudeman has won fame in Hollywood as an actor. He is the only living human being that can wiggle his ear, blow smoke rings, tight-rope walk, stand on one hand, play the piano with the other, and wiggle his toes all at the same time, while the band plays the polka. Virginia Priller, we find, has started up her own business and is doing quite well as a grocery Woman. She is in partnership with Joe Rediger and the name of her store in Joe and Joe's Food Stuff. Tom Paluska has reached the height of his ambition. He has finally been selected to be the main organ-grinder man in Cole Brothers' Circus. Due to the shortage of man-power Goldie Schuler has taken a position as a clown in Cole Brothers' Circus. In Tommy and Goldie's spare time you will find them feeding the elephants. Believe it or not Donna Schirer has finally settled down on a farm of her own. When she is not helping her husband, she is taking care of her pet calf and two kids. Rosemary Wilson turned down her ambition of joining the WAVES for a position of driving a transfer truck from Roanoke to Eureka. She has a man in every farm house along the way, so she takes the hard road past Bluniers going over, and the gravel road past Sauders coming back. This way she can make the rounds every day. ' Eliza Kistner is a missionary in far Africa. Her gentle ways have tamed the most savage savage. Her greatest achievement, a school for apes, has made her many close friends. Betty Walker with her beautiful singing voice is the leader of a church choir. Every Sunday their voices fill the church and crowd the people out. Irma Pfister has a job working for the Pfister Hybrid Co. She helps with the detasseling in the summer and shelling in the winter. Dot Martin, we find, is singing for the Salvation Army and you should hear the men swoon as she holds on to one of those high notes. And last but not least, our dear Mr. Cravens was left broken-hearted when his favorite lovable seniors graduated. He couldn't bear the sight of school without his dear little seniors so he decided that the only alternative was to join the Navy. He has now achieved the rating of eaman 3rd class after being in the Navy four years. Every pay day Wil find the sailors gathered around Seaman Cravens to participate in that little game that has to do with rolling ivory cubes. No wonder his family is on relief. The above has been prophesied, written, and approved by the three great and notable prophets, Mildred Rocke, Anne Wallace, and Jerry Sauder. 17 Junior Class Picture Top row, left to right: Marvin Yordy, Richard Rocke, Richard Zimmerman, Lloyd DeJohn, Eddie Teuscher, Jim Leman. They were supposed to raise enough nioney to give a banquet to the seniors, school board, and faculty in the spring. As it takes time to make enough money for a banquet, preparations were immediately begun. One of the first projects started was the selling of candy bars, potato chips, corn curls, peanuts, and popcorn at noons, after school, and at games. Hot dogs and pop were also sold at some of the basketball games. For many years the junior class has presented a play, and ours Was no exception. This play, Don't Keep Him Waiting, a three-act comedy, Was given October 18. It was a great success and We were proud to have made 95112.00 profit. Every class is asked to present an assembly program and We had ours the day of our play, The main attraction of the assembly was the play skits. A number of musical acts and a gossip column filled in the rest of the time. 18 J unlor-Senior Banquet The annual Junior-Senior banquet was held April 28 in the High school gymnasium. The Senior Class colors were wine, and white, but since we were unable to obtain wine colored paper, we had to use blue and white. The seniors' motto was, We've Crossed the Bayg the Ocean Lies Before Us. The gym was decorated to represent the deck of a ship which was christened the Voyager. All of the guests and hosts gathered in the reception room between 6:30 and 7:00 o'clock. It was a gay crowd, with all the girls dressed in formals and wearing lovely corsages. The lnvocation was given by Mr. Smith. Richard Zimmerman acted as toastmaster and announced each speaker in a humorous manner. Hostess Helen Hodel, welcomed the group and was followed by talks given by lst Mate Dorothy Martin, Admiral Cravens, and Commodore McCauley. After the main course, talks were given by 2!C Seaman Wilma Scherer, who spoke on Sincerityg 1fC Seaman Virginia Pril- ler, who discussed Honestyg 21C Seaman John Schirer gave a speech on Initiativeg 1fC Seaman Rosemary Wilson spoke on Perseverance, and 2!C Seaman Richard Rocke concluded with a talk on Success. Music was furnished all through the dinner by Nola McCauley and Anna Nofsinger, who player their marimbas. A short program given by Wayne West and his Deck Hands of WMBD, followed the last course. The acts were a tap dancing and singing duet, woman vocalist, 'and a girls' trio. The juniors also sponsored a few dances. Carl Wyss' orchestra and the Yordy Sisters' juke-box served as music. The banquet was scheduled for April 28, and proved to be a big success. The juniors also were very active in the inter-class contests. '1'he great amount of talent in this class brought us second place. Junior Play The junior play, Don't Keep Him Waiting, was presented October 22. The characters were as follows: Benjamin Fehr, Helen Hodel, Richard Zim- merman, Neta Fauber, James Leman, Geneva Ulrich, Richard Rocke, Wilma Scherer, Marvin Yordy, Annabelle Martin, Betty Hangartner, and Edwin Teuscher. Betty, the mainstay of the Ramble family has a difficult time to make both ends meet. Dave, who has been engaged to Betty, wants her to marry him and leave for South America and let the family look out for themselves for a change. But Betty refuses and Dave becomes interested in a South- ern charmer. Betty then changes her way of living as she goes on a spend- ing spree and charges everything to her family. In this, she gives her family a dose of their own medicine and also Dave, when she flirts with a Mr. Atkins. The family wake up to their shortcomings and make things right for Betty. The Southern charmer leaves with Mr. Atkins and Betty marries Dave and they leave for South America for their honeymoon. Music between Act I and Oct II was furnished by Marilyn DeWilde and Betty Hangartner. After the play, movies were made of sections of the play by Leroy Kempf. Sophomores The year 1943-1944 brought many happy experiences to the Sophomores. Among them, the winning of the Literary trophy in the interclass contests will always bring happy memories. The sophomores boast almost one-half the members of the band, and have a very large representation in the glee clubs. During the year 1943-1944 We had two class parties, one a pot luck and one a spaghetti supper. Another thing that stands out is the Junior-Senior banquet. The sopho- more girls and six of the boys served the banquet. We Wore white outfits and sailor hats. Although the Sophomore year is the least eventful, we did the best we could. 20 Freshman Class Picture 3 , . , . , . . .... . ,,., . .- ,. ... , ,M...,,--.i,.................................,.a.--....,....,. , ,,i.......J Top row, left to right: Herman Tjaden, Roy Thommen, Clarence Backer, John Pioletti, George Girardi, Gene Sauder, Mr. Wiles, class adviser. Freshman News When we freshmen entered school, the first thing the seniors thought of was initiation. Well, when initiation day came you should have seen us. We were really pretty sights, and on that afternoon we all had to do some funny stunt. Of course the next thing we thought about was the election of class officers. We elected Roger Elliott as presidentg Tim Bachman as vice presidentg Leo Bauman as secretary, and Roy Hangartner as treasurer. We chose Mr. Wiles as our clas superviser. We appreciate his cooperation and his willingness to help. In Mr. Wiles' science class, we Were studying the moon and on the night of the next full moon, we decided to have our class picnic. But as it rained we had it in the gym and we all had a grand time. Another outstanding event for the freshmen were the class contests. We 21 put on a one-act play, Paul Loses the Ration Books. The characters were Roy Hangartner, Roger Elliott, Gene Sauder, Mardell Leman, Mary Lou Blunier, Catherine Pisel, Mary Catherine Bradley, and Leslie Ratliffe. Our play received a B. Many students entered other events of the contests. The freshmen came in last, but next year we'll work harder. A Well, I really must say good-bye now and we'l1 let you know all about us when we are sophomores. Freshman Day On May 4, the student council sponsored a Freshman Day, to which all incoming students were invited. These guests of the present freshmen attended the freshman classes in the morning. In the afternoon an inter- esting assembly program was presented. This program consisted of several musical numbers and speeches about the numerous extra-curricular activities. After the program the freshmen and their guests received treats. Forty-one guests were present. Music News As a Whole the musical portion of our extra-curricular activities was very successful the past year. A large number of students took part in the interclass contest, both vocal and instrumental. All class choruses received high ratings and the specially selected mixed chorus which competed in the county contest held at R.V.H.S. received a rating of A, The judge called this one of the best high school mixed choruses he had ever heard. Wilma Scherer, who represented girls vocal for Roanoke, received a B, and Marvin Yordy, Who represented the boys, received an A. Anna Nof- singer received an A rating in piano. Early in the spring the Roanoke High school band participated in the Band Festival held in Eureka. Many favorable comments resulted from the excellent showing made in this festival. 23 l Student Council Picture Top row, left to right: Donna Schirer, Richard Zimmerman, secretary- treasurerg Charles Mangold, Jerry Sauder, president 3 John Sauder, Virginia Priller, vice president. It sponsored the annual Halloween party, Christmas party, all-school party, and Freshman Day. Besides these regular fea- tures, it sponsored a Homecoming and dance after the Metamora basket- ball game, Student Day twhich We hope will become traditionalb, a Red Cross Drive, and the traveling assemblies. Many improvements for our school were discussed and carried out. Everything was done in a democratic manner. F. B. I. Speaker Visits Many interesting assemblies were held for the students of R.V.H.S. the last six weeks. Perhaps the most outstanding was the visit made by Mr. Samuel Cotton, of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He related to a very attentive audience many experiences and accomp- llshments of the F. B. I. 24 Basketball Picture Standing: Wayne Pisel, Vincent Ekiss, Jimmy Hangartner, Harold De- Laval, Joe Aeschleman, Roy Thommen, Marvin Yordy, Jim Davis. Seated: Jack Sauder, Jerry Sauder, John Sauder, Richard Zimmerman, Jim Leman. Basketball The basketball season of 1943-44 came to a close on Feb. 24, with the Rockets Winning eight games and losing fourteen games. Coach Cravens comments on the team, I realize that this year's team probably lost more games in a season of regular play than any other team which I have coached. However, they deserve a lot of praise because they were the best of trainers and fought to the last whistle. When one remembers that the tallest boy on the first team was five feet ten inches tall this accounts for so many losses. Next year will find two players absent from the team. Those graduating are Jack and Jerry Sauder. Those receiving letters for basketball are Captain Jerry Sauder, Richard Zimmerman, Jim Leman, Jack Sauder, and John Sauder. The junior boys took the inter-class basketball tournament over the senior boys who received second place. The senior girls took the inter-class basketball game from the freshmen, who received second place honors. 25 Baseball 'l'he fall of '43 found the Roanoke Rockets' baseball team winning three and losing four games. 'i nose receiving letters for baseball are as follows: Robert lvlchildowney, J ack bauuer, Jerry bauder, Jim Leman, Lloyd DeJohn, John Sauder, Ricnard Zimmerman, George Girardi, Roy Thommen, Roy 1-iangartner, and possibly harold DeLaval. 'rhe track team this year nas been faced with many difficulties. Weather was the most prominent. 'llhe future track team looks very favorable be- cause of tne numerous underclassmen participating in this event. 'Iwo seniors, two juniors, and eight underclassmen composed the track team. it was impossible to play tennis this spring because of the rainy weather although last fall the tennis courts were always busy. buying the cold weather months when sports outside were impossible, the students staged an inter-class ping pong tournament. Kenny Bachman took first place forthe ooys with Marvin Xordy coming in second. Donna Lschirer took the girls' tournament with Dot Martin second. An unusual interest was developed in volley ball this spring. An inter- class tournament was played, with the freshman boys winning over the sophomore boys, who took second place. The freshman and senior girls won first and second respectively. Bond and Stamp Sales For 43-44 R.V.H.S. has proven its patriotism the past year by the many thousands of dollars in stamps and bonds sold. A glance at the class totals show the freshmen to have purchased S3,848.55g the sophomores, 34003475 the juniors, S6,540.75, and the seniors in the lead with the huge sum of 359,880.08 These purchases, with those of the faculty and staff, make a grand total of 328,774.10 for the year. A Minute Man flag was placed in the second floor corridor in January. This indicates that at least 90 per cent of the student body bought stamps and bonds.
