Because of the ship's extensive operations in the Bering Sea early in her career. ROANOKE was nicknamed The Polar Express. The mottos Max Flex and You call, We haul, no job too small came later through experience and hard work. ROANOKE is 658 feet long, has a 96 foot beam and can steam at sustained speeds in excess of twenty knots. The ship has a full load displacement of nearly 40,000 tons, will accommodate two CH-46 helicopters. and during this deployment beithed Well over 500 crew members. Dedicated to service, ROANOKE is an all-capability replenishment oiler whose primary mission was to keep the KITTY HAWK Battle Group fueled and supplied. Replenishment operations were conducted using the deck Winches, transfer stations, and fuel stations during connected replenishment QCONREPB. and CH-46 helicopters during vertical replenishment CVERTREPJ. ln addition to carrying over 7 million gallons ofjet and diesel fuel. ROANOKE can carry more than 350 tons of ammunition, 260 tons of refrigerated food, and l00 tons ofdry provisions. ROANOKE handled ox er l0.000 pounds of Battle Group mail during WESTPAC, and transferred 650 tons ofgcncral stores cargo, nearly S million gallons ot JP-5 and over 20 million gallons of DEM to Battle Group ships, All in all, ROANOIQF proved that she truly xx as Dedicated to Service during deployment.
