After twenty-three days at sea, there wasn't anyone aboard ROANOKE who wasn't ready to get to Sasebo. We had no way of knowing then that Sasebo would be our most-visited port. Crewmembers will most likely remember the first visit to Sasebo as one in which they were able to blow off some steam, sight-see, and wait in huge lines to use the phone. Because Sasebo was fairly small and the whole Battle Group pulled in during the first visit, crewmembers will also likely recall that there were sailors everywhere. The Navy base did its best to accommodate everyone by setting up beverage tents and playing music on the waterfront, which led to a festive atmosphere. That initial trip also included softball, volleyball, and soccer tournaments with both other ships and Japanese teams, and a Japanese Defense Force hosted reception for the Battle Group. Subsequent visits to Sasebo were primarily for the purpose of loading stores. Although these visits tended to make Sasebo a working port, being in port provided both a needed break from at-sea time, and an opportunity for the officers and chiefs Land some others lj to play each other in softball. With easy access to one of the world's biggest cities, there was much to see and do for everyone. Our visits there were also notable because for the first time since the Vietnam conflict, two carriers, the USS KITTY HAWK and USS INDEPENDENCE, were in port at the same time. To say the least, the base was very crowded. ROANOKE had two port calls to Yokosuka, one for pleasure and one strictly for business. During the initial visit, many personnel climbed Mt. Fuji, toured Tokyo, went to Tokyo Disney, or made the night time trek to Tokyo's Wippongi District- a very Westernized section of the city. One shipmate even made it to Nagano, the site of the l 998 Winter Olympics. Many were impressed by the area's efficient transportation system, and everyone was awed by the sheer number of people who lived in the metropolitan area between Yokosuka and Tokyo. ROANOKE's second visit was extended and lasted a total of twenty-three days. This was a working port as the ship was undergoing an availability period and making preparations for OPPE. To occupy our evenings, an extensive softball tournament was organized Cwith the chiefs being the final victorsb, and several divisions took the opportunity to have divisional parties. Base MVVR made bowling and the movie theaters free, gym facilities were made use of, and the ship's PRT was held - including the infamous l .5 kilometer Qvice 1.5 milej run. Aside from the amount of time spent there, crewmembers will most likely recall the Haunch fthe area immediately outside the base gateb, the Club Alliance and Seaside Club, base taxi service, and the free movies, which nearly every- one made use of at least once. Yokosuka was a base that all hands came to know well and enjoyed, but were ready to leave once the time to get underway finally arrived. Tokyo Disney was a very popular attraction for ROANOKE tourists. .Mfrs ,MfQ,, . An enormous metropolitan area that easily accom- modated the entire Battle Group during two separate port visits, the city had something for everyone. Gigantic shopping malls like the Pacific Place and Admiralty Centre reminded sailors ofhome, but the best bargains were to be found at the truly Capitalistic shops in Kowloon. Hong Kong fostered a buyer's market, with typical purchases including electronics, silks, jewelry, china, CDs, and the occassional Hard Rock Cafe T-shirt. Places crewmembers will most likely remember include the Fleet Arcade, Mad Dog's, the Bull and the Bear, the Prince of Wales Building, Wanchai, the Kangaroo Pub, Victoria Peak and the Star Ferry. With a McDonald's on every corner, good bargains and exotic nightlife, Hong Kong was a memorable port that won't soon be forgotten. l . 2 , .
