Her Keel was laid January 19, 1974 and she was launched 'sp I December 7th of the same year. She was then tumed over to the United States Navy N Ca , + I September 30, 1976 and was commissioned October 30, 1976 at the Naval Shipyard C' B 33: :N in Long Beach, Califomia. After months of alterations and testing, including the I5 I gr' installation of the Nato Seasparrow Missile System, USS ROANOKE made her first E I E appearance in her homeport of San Diego, Califomia in January of 1977. Currently, IW ROANOKE Cans Long Beach, Califomia her home. I ROANOKE is taken from the county and city of Roanoke Vir inia as xi e I g 9 6001 I s0UTue z'tmanoke River, located in southwestem Virginia. The ship is the forth U.S. I Navy ship to bear the name ROANOKE . The first, a screw frigate later converted to : an ironclad, served the Union Navy with distinction during the Civil War. The second Q5 6 I was a World War l minelayer that participated in the planting of mines during the I 09' Q46 ' North Sea mine barrage. The third was a light cruiser, serving the fleet from 1949 44' 'ip : through 1970. Q? , The nickname Polar Express was given to ROANOKE following her first underway ' I operation at Adak, Alaska in February 1977. Although her crew was relatively 1 inexperienced in working with each other, they performed brilliantly, and were , ' commended for their actions. 1 ROANOKE is provided with two 26-foot motor whale boats, two 26-foot personnel I 1 I I I I I I I I boats, and two 40-foot utility boats. Its armament consists of a Dual-Channel NATO Seasparrow Missile System. The ship also has two 20mm guns, two Phalex Close-ln- Weapons-Systems ICIWSJ and a ANXSLQ-32 Nj 3 Electronic Warfare Suite. I
