Her keel was laid January 19, 1974 and she was launched on December 7th of the same year. Turned over to the Navy on Septem- ber 30, 1976, she was commissioned at Long Beach Naval Shipyard on October 30, 1976. In February of 1977, she participated in oold weather operations in the Bering Sea to test the ability of naval ships to conduct underway replenishments in such adverse conditions. This excercise earned ROANOKE her nickname of The Polar Express. ROANOKE was built with the latest developements in replenishment at sea equipment and some of the most techno- logically advanced weapons systems of the time. Since her commission, she has had some major technological additions, two Close in Weapons Systems mounts, the NATO Sea Sparrow Missile System, and the ANISLQ-32CVj3 Electronic Warfare Suite. 2 Ship's Mission , I N., . ,gig f 4 , -'9f,j-3191 ' ffffiif I 2 I ' ' fe45i'i ,, i .C The mission of an AOR is to provide operating forces with petroleum prod- ucts, refrigerated and dry provisions, consumables, and ammunitions, includ- ing missiles and bombs. Replenishment operations are conducted using the deck winches, transfer stations and fueling stations. These are connected to ships which manuever alongside while traveling through the water at about fif- teen miles per hour. The normal distance that ships stay during these evolutions is 150 to 200 feet. ln addition, transfers are also conducted using CH-46 Helicopters from the flight deck. Because of her immense capabilities, what was once a multi ship replenishment operation can now be performed solely by the Polar Express and at a rate as fast as the receiving ship can accomodate her. ROANOKE has been commanded by Captain Paul A Asmus, Captain Clifford M. Johm, Captain Riley D. Mixson, Captain William H. Reed, Captain Robert L. Toney, Captain Richard W. Holly, Captain Robert P. Hickey, Captain Robert L. Johnson J r., and is currently under the command of Captain John F. Junek. ROANOKE has been awarded the Battle E Award, the CN O Safety AwardfThird Awardj, the Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Award, the Meritorious Unit Commen- dation, and the First CNO Surface Ship Helicopter Safety Award.
