ROANOKE went far beyond that with 83 consecutive days in the Indi- an Ocean. x Captain Bunky Johnson was born in Ottumwa, iowa on 2 October 4944 and grew up in Penacook. New Hampshire. After attending Bates College In Lewiston, Maine, he en- tered flight training in the Officer Candidate Airman COCANQ Program in 4964 and received his commission and Naval Flight Officer Wings in February 4966 after training in Pensacola, Florida and'Glynco, Georgia. ' During his initial sea duty assignment, Captain Johnson flew E-2A aircraft in VAW-44 at NAS North Island, California and later participated in the commissioning of VAW-4 42. He made two combat deployments to Southeast Asia aboard USS ENTERPRISE CCVN-651 during this assignment. After a brief tour as an instructor in Pensacola, he earned Bachelors and Masters degrees from the Naval Postgraduate School. In 4972, he re- turned to seags-Navigator of USS FARRAGUT Cthen DLG-65' for the UNITAS Xlllcircumnavi- gation of-South America, later serving as Combat information Center Officer. In 4974. Captain Johnson began an assignment at Grumman Aerospace Corporation in Bethpage. New York accepting new E-2C aircraft for the Navy and also flying in the EA- 6B and F-44. He commenced a two-year sea tour in 4976 on Commander Seventh Fleet Staff homported in Yokosuka, Japan and deploying throughout the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans. Following his return stateside in 4979, Captain Johnson deployed to the Mediterranean as Operations Officer with VAW- 425 aboard USS FORRESTAL CCV-593. He then taught Anti-Air and Electronic Warfare at Tactical Training Group Atlantic, Dam Neck, Virginia. , ' - ln'January 4982, Captain Johnson became Executive Officer of VAW-426 aboard USS JOHN F..KENNEDY CCV-673 and took command of the squadron in May 4983. During his tenure, VAW-426 deployed to the North Atlantic and participated in Lebanon contin- gency operations in the Eastern Mediterranean. The squadron won the COMNAVAIR- LANT Battle E , CINCLANTFLT Silver and Golden Anchor and Chief of Naval Operations Airborne Early Warning Excellence awards while he was Commanding Officer. Following a year of study at the Naval War College, Captain Johnson served in the Pentagon as Assistant for Aviation Plans for the deputy Chief of Naval Operations QAir Warfarey from December 4985 to October 4987.
