Class History In the fall of 1949 Richard Krom, Bob Slee, Martha Schafer, David York, Penelope Fisher, Lee McCord, Glenn Coates, Priscilla Van Buskirk, and Judy Kendall entered the first grade at Roann High School. With Mrs. Deardorff as our example and our guide we learned to study and play together. We all remember the Christmas and Valentine decorations, the green sandbox that stood in the corner of the room, and our puzzle pages books. We remember the way she read Heidi , the picnic in Sloop ' s woods, and the day Mrs. Deardorff ' s chair collapsed with her. We remained in Mrs. Deardorff ' s room the second year. Having lost David York, Richard Krom, and Judy Kendall, we added to our class Becky Meyer, Jack Smith, and Richard Kilworth. It was this year that the girls stayed all night with Mrs. Deardorff, and her husband short -sheeted the bed and put a mousetrap in it. The third grade was spent in Mrs. White ' s room. Richard Kilworth left us and so did Glenn Coates; Dareld Randol and Sandra Penrod joined us. Here we discovered that you could some- times fool the teacher. We all took our chances by passing notes. Susan Martin and Elizabeth Joy joined us our fourth year. Lee McCord and Jack Smith moved. This was the year Priscilla got hit on the head with a pair of scissors by the frustrated art teacher. Mrs. Krom was our fifth grade teacher. We had one new member in our class - - Roberta Harrell. We elected class officers. Susan Martin, our president, spent most of class meetings sitting on a stool in front of the class giggling. Penelope, Susie, and Alice were sent to the office because they stayed outdoors after the bell had rung. The sixth grade holds cherished memories for us all. Mrs. Weimer, our teacher, helped us make clay tablets from mud and water as the early Romans did. We gained four new mem- bers: Bill, Alice, and Mack Murphy and Sheila Garner. Three of our classmates became band members. The girls discovered lipstick and the boys discovered the girls. At last we were upstairs - seventh graders - Junior High. Richard Krom returned and Bill James, Richard King, and Larry Davidson joined us. Sheila Garner, Susan Martin, and Alice, Bill, and Mack Murphy moved away. The eighth grade was spent quietly. Richard King moved. We studied hard and the next fall we all became Green Freshmen. Some of us were so enthralled with high school that we forgot to study and found ourselves in biology the next year too. We also had to outline all of Dickens ' Christmas Carol for Eng- lish class. Mrs. Wilson was our sponsor. Larry Davidson moved. The rest of the boys decided they were tired of shop and hid from the coach. As Sophomores Arden Gilmer and Dawn Graves joined us. Bill James left and Martha Schafer moved. This year we received our class sweaters - the first white Roann had. When we became Juniors we acquired Judy Delong as a member of the class. Dawn Graves moved. We got our class rings and were all busy with the concession and our candy sales. After eleven years of co-operation and companionship we entered the last of our high school career. We sold magazines and Christmas cards. We presented our Senior Play, Let Me Out of Here.l We left on our trip April 18. Now Commencement and Baccalaureate are over, and we are graduates of Roann High School. This is our past. That which lies before us is our future. Penelope Fisher
