The boys brought two basketball trophxes home They won the Southern Gage Tournament by defeatmg Odell They also won the district tournament but were defeated by Brock at Peru Davld Slsler and Loren Frantz We then settled down to work on our musxc progra.m sang in the boys quartet and recewed excellent ratmgs triple trlo Lavona and Davxd sang solos at the Mudecas Muszc Contest and both recewed an excellent rating The would be mus1c1ans then journeyed to Geneva for the dzstrxct contest There Loren Frantz also sang a solo Lavona and Loren both received an excel lent and David recelved a superlor rating Our Junior year was the flrst tune the school had Lavona Frernchs, Duane Howard and Davxd Sxsler gave contest Out of the entire school dramatic group Davld the Distnct Contest and recewed an excellent rating U1 the one act play, Andante, and received an honorable After the basketball season we had another great Junior Semor Banquet We had a Treasure lsland theme which many people considered one of the most orxgmal to be carried out at I-lolmesvxlle And so the days shd past and our Senxor year arrxved The fxrst bxg event of this year was the Semor sneak day We followed the footsteps of the prevlous class to Kansas City Lavona Frenchs sang mn the partnczpated mn the speech contests readlngs for our local dramatic was chosen to go to Tecumseh for on the readmg he gave I-Ie was also mention for his fme job of actlng task upon our shoulders gwmg the Mxssourl There we vlsxted the Ford car assembhng plant and the Kansas Clty Zoo We left very early on a Friday mornmg and returned the next Saturday evenmg Later in November we vlsxted Beatrice to have our pxctures taken at Gale s studio Though most of us were dissatisfied we decxded that our pxctures were as good as could be expected In their Semor year Duane David Gene and Loren played on the varsity basketball tearn Thomas Bear was dxsquallfled because of a mzsunderstandxng concerning the all star game Alfred Dorn was dlsquallfled because he had lived outside the dxstrlct durlng the SIXITUTIBI' Sxnce the number of girls m our class was small there was not much talent for girls sports commg from the Semor Class Anna Lxneweber played on the volleyball tearn during her Junlor and Semor years Lookmg forward now we see the music contests dramatxcs contests the finish of the basketball season the Junlor Senior Banquet Baccalaureate and Commencement stxll he ahead of us We are lookmg forward to each of these wxth a good deal of antxcxpatlon As we look back on the years we can thmk of many thlngs we w1sh we had done dxf ferently but on the whole these last four years have constituted a very happy and wholly satxsfactory experxence Anna Lxneweber Lavona Frerxchs Duane Howard David Slsler Clay Roll Charles Rxchards Loren Frantz Gene Crxpe Tho s Bear Class Flower Whlte Carnatlon Class Colors Purple and Whmte Class Motto Perseverance Overcomes Everything 8 , . . - 1 . . . . . , . ,, U . . . . . . . . ,, ,, . . . . . . GENE CRIPE He doesn t hurry he hasnt any cares he doeln t worry t nds to his o n affairs LOREN FRANTZ A little nonlenle no and then la relished by the best CHARLES RICHARDS Uh Huh 7 Clan .Hzstory We the Senxor Class of 1949, entered I-lolmesv111e as tradltlonal greenhorns lacklng only the usual turndlty of Fresh men 1n September of 1944 The seven boys and four g1r15 who made up the Class were Alfred Dorn Duane Howard Dale .Tantzen Loren Frantz Gene Crxpe Thornas Bear Dav1dSxsler Joan Humrlch Lavona Frerlchs Anna Lmeweber and Darlene Forke The fxrst great event of our hxgh school careers was the 1n1t1at1on party which turned out to be not quzte as frxghtemng as we had expected It to be Soon after that event we unfortunately lost Thomas Bear who moved to Cahforma The presence of Arlene Frantz, however, evened up our class agam We entered our Sophomore year full of experzence and knowledge The entrance of Sh1rley Tztus Charles Rmchards and Jeanette Meyers made up for the loss of Joan Hurnrxch Darlene Forke and Dale Jantzen Later 1n the same year Jeanette Wzth our promotion to the rank of Soph mores came the pr1v11ege of uutlatmg the Freshmen ln return for whxch they acted as the hosts for a hayrack rxde Duane Howard and Davrd Sxsler played as substrtutes on the hrst team and Alfred Dorn played on the flrst team squad during the1r Sophomore year In our Junior year we lost Arlene Frantz Dean Glerhart and Shirley Titus Thomas Bear came back to us from Call forma and later proved to be one of the star basketball players ln the Southern Gage Conference Before we knew at we had the task of puttxng on a class play After a good deal of confusion Bolts and Nuts the Junxor Play was presented to the pubhc The varsxty basketball team of 1947 48 mcluded Thomas Bear Alfred Dorn Gene Crxpe Davzd Sxsler and Duane Howard Thomas Bear was given the title as captaxn of the all star teaxn of the Southern Gage Conference Alfred Dorn was a substxtute for that team O , . G4 Cla!! pI'0p,leCy Let us turn ahead the wheels of tune for a few mmutes and gaze into the future of the class of 49 lt was a blnstermg day tn Malay for the flrst of December and the workrnen had to be almost forced to keep dxggmg Oh excuse me I forgot I Davtd Slsler axn an archaeolo gxst and the afore mentioned workmen were natxves employed to remove the first few feet of earth from the prtceless remains we were excavattng The expedxtton s head photographer Gene Crzpe had just gone to develop some plates of the mornxng s fmds when one of the workmen fatnted as a result of the terrlble hear I decxded to let the workmen off for the afternoon and told them to return early the next mornxng when the heat was not so great About that tune a messenger carne from town to tell us that a load of supplies had arrxved from the States and that there was also a cable gram from someone names Howard I sent Gene after them and stayed on the campstte myself It was necessary that someone stay at the carnp for Lf no one was there we often had vtsxtors from the hxlls who belxeved we were provokmg thexr Gods by molestmg the ancient graves These natxves often proceeded to wreck our caxnp and fill m the excava tnons and generally had a good job done before they were discovered It was about four o clock when Gene returned to carnp As he caxne tearmg across, I saw somethmng had excited hun In hls excitement he completely forgot about an open grave in the center of the camp and plop two bodies m one grave but one wasn t dead The cablegram was from Guess Who It was a Howard all right but tt wasn t Duane lt was Lavona She had wnred to mform us that our Senior Class was havmg a re umon somettme durmg Christmas vacation and wanted us to coxne Of course, we would We hadn t been away from our wok m Malay for a year and a half and a vacation tn the states was Just what we needed an excuse to take So after all necessary arrangements had been made and the workmen laxd off, we packed and headed back for the states We landed After a rest and a good bath we went to the Coffee Shop for lunch, and who should we meet there but Thomas Bear You can ixnagxne our surprlse when he told us that he was a cattle rancher tn western Nebraska and the owner of a one thousand acre ranch The after noon soon passed as we talked over old tunes and also learned that the reunion was to be the next evemng at the home of Howard s Duane and Lavona, that :sl Thomas mvxted Gene and me to rzde w1th hun 111 has new convertxble land a Cadxllac to boot J Of course we accepted He told us he would meet us in the lobby the followxng afternoon at sux o clock He then excused hunself because he was due at hxs aunt s home for dinner that evemng We had nothing to do that evenmg so we took m a movie Afterwards we stepped into the drug store for cokes and there szttmg at the counter was none other than Anna Lmeweber In a brief chat with her we learned that she was a nurse She was doing private nursmg for some wealthy banker and hxs wlfe in Beatrtce by the name of Scheve Why wasn t that the Harold Scheve s we knew? Of course it was Anna sald there really wasn t anythmg wrong wxth exther of them but xt was the style to have prwate nurses now and Mrs Scheve four old Englxsh and history teacher, couldn t bear to be out of style We took the hberty of lnvltxng Anna to go wxth us ln Tom s car and told her where to meet us She saxd she really must be gomg home now for xt was about tune to gtve Mrs Scheve her sleepxng tablets So we went back to the hotel and belzeve me we didn t need any sleepxng tablets to go to sleep The next day was spent ln walking about town and eating until tune for Tom to come and get us We then went to our rooms and after a quxck cleanup went down to the lobby where we found Anna already waxtmg She said she had just arrxved and had seen nothxng of Tom Tune passed and stxll no Tom Then about a half hour later one of the most comical looking old Fords wzth the top cut off and all sorts of undxgmfxed and ridiculous thmgs pamted on xt, drove up and out jurnped Tom Was he mad When l asked what happened to the Cadillac we ' 0.5 OI-- ' ' S I I , --IO il ' ' U , . , . . . . . . . 3 - in Omaha and took the bus for Beatrice where we got rooms in the Paddock Hotel. g l u - . , 4 . . . . . . , .
