'pcctuxe G ittiesKi ntettca Pride in achievements and the satisfaction that comes when a job is done well is manifested by the eighty-three members of the Riverton Chapter Future Farmers of America. The chapter won five County, ten District, seven State, one Tri-State and two National Awards the past year with three of its members winning top national awards to fully justify the feeling that exist among chapter members. Billy Joe Walker was the county speaking champion, Benny Lasseter was winner in the Quiz Contest, Morris Dean Patterson was the winner in the F.F.A. one acre division corn contest. Buddy Darwin showed the Grand Champion steer and the Quartet composed of Benny Lasseter, Laymon Blackburn. Fred Higginbotham and Charles Patterson, were again county champions. In district competition Merle Carter. Jimmy Mitchell and Buddy Darwin had calves to win their respective classes with Jimmy having the champion of the angus breed and Buddy the Grand Champion of the show. Charlie Joe Strong was selected as the top showman. In other district eliminations. Billy Mullins, Donald Sublett and W. D. Moon placed first in beef cattle judging; Michael Coleman. Charlie Joe Strong, and Merle Carter placed second in hog judging; Benny Lasseter placed second in the Quiz Contest; the radio team placed third; the quartet placed second in the quartet finals contest; Billy Joe Walker was awarded third place in a very close contest in public speaking, and the dairy judging team placed first. At the state convention in Auburn the chapter received the top chapter award for the fifth consecutive year. The chapter also placed first in Farm Safety while the hog judging team placed first and earned the right to represent Alabama in Livestock Judging in Kansas City. W. D. Moon, Jan White and Merle Carter received State Farmers degrees. The Dairy Judging team - Benny Lasseter, Jan White. Billy Mullins, and Donald Sublett, alternate - placed first in Dairy Judging at the Alabama State Fair and won an all expense trip to Chicago. The F.F.A. bull won first place at the Birmingham State Fair and the other F.F.A. bull won second place in the state breeding program. Martha Voekel was runner-up in the Tri-State Queen contest held in Chattanooga. At the National Convention in Kansas City the chapter was awarded the Gold Emblem for the fifth consecutive year and the Livestock Judging team composed of Michael Coleman. Charlie Joe Strong, Billy Mullins, and Buddy Darwin, alternate, received the Gold Emblem in Livestock Judging. Michael Coleman and Charlie Joe Strong received individual Gold Emblem ratings and Billy Mullins received the Silver Emblem rating on individual performance. The Chapter has done some splendid cooperative projects with the school and its members. The two Hereford bulls and the Duroc boar are but a few community services rendered the past year. Developement of leadership is one of the primary objectives of the organization. More than thirty members participated in the public speaking contest. Seven members attended the State Convention, four the National Convention, participating in calf shows; and three members received State Farmers degrees. Four joint parties and an education trip to Memphis was enjoyed by the members. The chapter was under the leadership of Benny Lasseter, president; Jan White, vice-president; Donald Sublett, secretary; Billy Mullins, treasurer; W. D. Moon, reporter; Charlie Joe Strong, sentinel; and J. D. Wigley, advisor. With the following officers: Martha Voekel, president; Frances Blair, vice-president; Babs Smithey, second vice-president; Jean Lamb, third vice-president; Lucy Ray, secretary; Jeanette Neeley, historian; Patsy Jones, assistant historian; Betty Lasscter, parliamentarian; Nancy Cole- man, reporter; Ruth Shields, song leader; Joyce Douglass, assistant song leader; and the cooperation of fifty-six active members and our advisor. Mrs. J. D. Wigley. we have had a successful year. Jeanette Neeley. Mary Elkins. Louise Wall Sherry Matter, Lucy Ray and our advisor, attended the state convention at Alabama College. Jeanette served as a hostess. Frances Blair, Nancy Coleman, Jeanette Neeley, and Babs Smithey received State Homemaker Degrees. Jeanette Neeley represented our chapter and was one of nine girls and three adults representing Alabama at the National Convention, July 1-6, in Columbus, Ohio where she served as recorder for one of the sessions. Our theme this year is Every Member A Growing Member. We have held weekly meetings with each member taking part at least twice. We have given several assembly programs. Sixty- four members were present at our spend-the-night party. We helped the P.T.A. with the Halloween Carnival and the Political Rally. We made contributions to the Mary Ling Hayley Gift Scholarship and to the Lending Library Fund. Nine girls - Mary Elkins, Peggy Fears. Patsy Jones, Frances Lamb, Sherry Matter, Doris Petty, Juanita Selby, and Margaret Woods are working toward their State Homemaker degrees. Several members are entering the Miss F.H. A. contest. We prepared and served supper for the F. F. A. initiation and had four parties with the F.F. A. the first semester. Plans are to have three or more parties. The chapters are most appreciative to Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Fulton for helping direct games at our parties. Martha Voekel and Jeanette Neeley are competing for F.F. A. Queen. Three members are entering four calves in the calf shows for F.H. A., F.F. A., and 4-H Club members. Members enjoyed the 2-day educational trip to Memphis so much that they have sold flavoring and rat poison and helped to get magazine subscriptions to raise money for another trip. Many improvements have been made in the department. The cabinets have been finished in the kitchen, new Frigidaire Automatic washing machine installed, rubber tile put on kitchen floor, living room floor refinished, new screens, and the department painted throughout. We bought the paint and washing machine, and three tables and twelve chairs have been ordered.
