Bailey Future Farmers of America J. D. Wigley—Advisor The chapter won five county, four district, one state semi-final, four state and one national award to climax one of the most successful years in its history. Franklin Miller and Morris Dean Patterson showed the champion Hereford and Angus steers in the County Livestock Show. Franklin s steer was also the reserve champion. In the Corn Production Contest ten members produced better than 100 bushels of com per acre. Morris Dean Patterson, Billy Walker and Billy Ray Patterson were district winners in the Corn Contest—winning first in three out of the five districts in the county. In the district Elimination Contest the chapter placed first in Parliamentary Procedure, second in the Radio Program, second in Dairy Judging, and second in the District Dairy Show «ftidging Contest. WayIon Sad they placed second in the State Public Speaking Semi-Finals. In the State Contests the chapter placed first in the Chapter Contest, second in Parliamentary Procedure, second in Quartet and fourth in Forestry. At the National Convention our chapter was awarded the Gold Emblem, the highest award in the National Chapter Contest, for the second straight year. The members cooperated with all parts of the school and other existing agencies as well as doing some worthwhile cooperative work among its members. Some of the cooperative activities were: feeding and managing calves on grazing demonstration, started pig chain, put asphalt tile floor in chapter room and office, purchased combination radio and record player for chapter room, put door-check on front door, purchased chair for office and one for teacher s class room desk. Several good magazines have been subscribed to by the chapter. The chapter now has two pure bred bulls in the community to improve the livestock. Sears-Roebuck replaced the Hereford bull which died with another good animal. The Holstein bull is serving a good purpose in improving the dairy production of the conmainity. The telephone which was installed several years ago is being kept up by the chapter—thus assisting in service to the conmranity. Development of leadership is one of the primary aims of the organization and many activities have been planned and carried out with this in mind. Thirty-four members partici- pated in the ftiblic Speaking Contest. The quartet stimulated much interest in F.F.A. work by appearing before many groups. Ten members attended the State Convention and two the National Convention. Kenneth Compton attended the State Forestry Camp. The chapter gave three chapel, two radio, and thrwe Civic Club programs. Roy Cope and Billy Johnson were awarded State Farmer degrees. Much interest has been shown in the fat calf shows to be held in Huntsville, Decatur and Birmingham. Members have seventeen calves on feed for the show. A good recreational program has helped to keep the spirit high. We have had four parties with the F.H.A. and have three more planned. The chapter was under the leadership of Bobby Green, President; Billy Johnson, Vice- President; Robert Moon, Secretary; James Strong, Treasurer; L. C. Nash, Reporter; Earl Tate, Sentinel; Waylon Smithey, Executive Secretary; and J. D. Wigley, Adviser. 33 of the 31+ members who participated in the chapter public speaking contest. The winner was Waylon Smithey. Members show banners that they won in the district and state P. P. A. contest. Bobby Green, chapter president, and J. D. Future Homemakers of America Advisor—Mrs. J. D. Wigley Under the leadership of the following officersi Lucy Tipton, president; Joyce Naugher, vice-president; Mildred Ray, second vice-president; Vivian Selby, secretary; Doris Green, treasurer; Minnie Brown, parliamentarian; Ann Wallace, Historian; Jo Jones, reporter; Rachel Sanders, assistant report- er; and Mrs. J. D. Wigley, advisor; and with the co-operation of fifty seven active members we have had a very successful year. Iva Mae Robertson, Katie Tate, Lucy Tipton, Pauline Alverson, Ann Wallace, Doris Green and our advisor attended the ll|th annual convention at Alabama College. Iva Mae, Katie, and Lucy received their State Homemaker Degrees. Ann, as Miss F. H. A. of Madison County , beautifully represented us in the state Miss F. H. A. contest in which 61 girls competed. We have had weekly meetings with each member being on the program at least two or three times during the year. We had year books printed for each member. We are making a scrap book. We made a contribution to the stPte scholarship fund and to the White House Youth conference fund. We had two spend-the-night parties, and entertained the Home Demonstration Club. We prepared supper for the F. F. A. when they held the initiation and had six parties with the F. F. A. during the year. We are so proud of the improvements which have been made in our Homemaking Department. We paid the County Board of Education $127.00 on the rubber tile which they put on the clothing room floor; we bought seven machine stools, a chair for the teachers desk, and supplies for the third year Homemaking class to refinish four machines. We paid $100.00 to have the divan reupholstered and bought $1;.0.00 worth of books for the Homemaking Library. We bought a sink for the kitchen and exchanged the thirty gallon hot water heater for a forty gallon heater. The County Board of Education is building in cabinets in the kitchen and we plan to buy some tables and chairs for the kitchen, when we raise enough money. Miss F. H. A. will be selected to compete in the county contest. The county winner competes in the state contest. Ann Wallace, the F. F. A. Queen entered the Tri-State F. F. A. Queen contest sponsored by the Chattanooga Times. The last week in April we plan to have en F. F. A. and F. H. A. Parents Night program and Fashion Show. Our Motto is Toward New Horizons .
