This experience also de- velops self-coniidence and poise in the individual. The preparation of a class play for presentation requires many hours of the students' and teachers' time in addition to the regular school duties. Students look back with pride upon the pleas- ant memories which grew out of participation in a class play. Electron Page Twenty-four GANGWAY FOR GHOSTS first Row-fleft to right? Othell Moore, Senior Play Cast Gangway for Ghosts was presented on April 22. 1949. The central action of the play took place in a house of mystery. How to cure his foolish young half sister, of her aspiration to become a detective was Hal Charteris' CLyle Ballardj, major headache. To Storm Heights, a rambling old mansion on the crest of a cliff overlooking the Hudson, came Sally, CJoyce Harveyj. accompanied by her admirer, String Beane, CHarold Dean Mishlerj, a nervous lad who believed in giving ghosts plenty of gangway. She was pursuing a charming actress, Gayla Grande, Clna Rae McGuireD, to demand of her, why she had broken her engagement to Brother Hal. But Gayla could only plead a mysterious tragedy in her life, because of which she was on the verge of a nervous breakdown and fled for refuge to Storm Heights with her colored maid. Posy May, fPatricia Mishler3, who had de gallopin' creeps on account ob spooksf' Sally. who had taken a detective correspondence course, soon had her hands full of detecting. Storm Heights was occupied by an eccentric spinster. Hester Storm, fWanda Williamsj, her neurotic housekeeper, Minnie Brill, fBetty Stricklandj, and her appalling butler, the one-eyed Peters, CJoseph Reaj. It proved to be haunted by a couple of blood-chilling phantoms: Ethan Storm. a violin maker, and his gypsy bride, whom he murdered in order to cntomb her golden voice in a master-violin. Some of the ghostly effects achieved were a tinkling tambourine, the weird strains of a haunted violin. mysterious whisperings in the walls, a dancing headless body. and the floating head of the gypsy bride-all of which did delightfully freeze the spines of the spectators: while the hysterical antics of Posy May and String Beane Sent them into gales of merriment. Much excitement was created by the search for a priceless Burma ruby, which was finally discovered in-of all places!-Peterfs empty eye socket. In the end, Sally was effectively cured of her passion for sleuthing. Junior Play Cast The 'junior class presented We shook the Family Tree on December 9, 1948. The action of the play centered around Hildegarde CMarilyn Pratherj, a dramatic wallflower. She pined for a super date for the prom. With the help of Mother CBetty Williamsj, Hildegarde managed to get a blind date that baffled her two mischievous brothers, Bob CBobby Joe Lyerlaj and Jimmy flsloyd Hockettj. The situation was not helped when Bob's catty girl friend, Ellie May lPatty Thatcherj, and her friend Jill CMary Ann Hodsonj found that her secret admirer was Freddie Shermer CKenneth Rogersb, who wore knickers because his fussy mother, Mrs. Shermer fRita Gipsonj did not want to look too old. Due to a scandal, started when little Paige Mason fPatsy Mastj delivered his old love letters to the neighbors, Father CDavid AuBuchonj was in trouble with his boss, Mr. Shermer CClifTord Hardy, Jr.J, who was somewhat of a stuffed shirt. Between the love letters and a speech Hildegarde made, Father came to the conclusion that she was starting all the trouble and forced her to go to the prom with Freddie. But with the help of Sally CJeanell Merrillj and Freddie's new-found determination to wear long pants, the play came to a hilarious and happy ending. The play was directed by Mr. Gerald E. Barkley. Freshman Play Cast 'iYoung, Willing and Able was presented by the freshman class on March 18, 1949. The action of the entire play took place in a private office at the manu- facturing plant of the Beasley Musical Instrument Company, located in the small mid-western town of Corn Center. J. Beethoven Beasley CGerald Gar- rettj, the owner, was about to go into bankruptcy. He had old-fashioned ways of doing business in these days of modern, high pressure methods. Beasley's son, Jimmy CPaul Derfeltj, returned from prep school in the east. Dottie Stone CFaye Bilkeb, his father's young secretary, told Jimmy that Beasley instruments were the best made. All the business needed was a little pep in its management, a few ideas in the realm of advertising and promotion--in a word: youth. Mr. Beasley agreed to give the younger generation a chance if they could persuade Ophelia Pringle Clva Jo Hallj, the town's richest, to extend the note she held against the company. Jimmie and Dottie succeeded in doing this: then with the aid of their young friends, they launched their campaign to put the company back on its feet. They organized the 'Beasley Boogie-Woogie Band. Their advertising proved that Beasley instruments had fewer sour notes in them than any other make. But, just when things were beginning to look brighter, Ophelia Pringle called in the note for personal rea- sons, and the youngsters were apparently headed for disaster. In a succession of richly comic scenes, this disaster is averted, and youth marched forward in its inevitable triumph. Other members of the cast included: Stormy Weather CHarold Paulj, an Indian Chief who wanted to play the piccolo: Betsy Beasley CBetty Ryonj, Jimmy's nine year old sister: Abbey Pringle CPatricia Rogersb, who put on airs and considered herself very superior: Gertrude Grump fPeggy Stringerj, who was musically inclined: Corky Powers CJack Dale Inmanj, a young promoter: Willie Wilson fJames Colej, who had a sales personality: Tiny Betts CPatricia Plilerj, a girl who liked to eat: Hilda Hope fJohanna Hcwelll and Selena Mayer CBertha Wadej , who were friends of Dottie: Rick Carter fRaymond Luleyj, a trouble-maker, and Lita Francis CBonnie Hanerj, a friend of Jimmy's and a little snob. The Royal Ramblers carried the colors of Riverton High School into battle in a manner of which RHS may justly be proud, Always a spirited, hard playing team, the 1948 Ramblers won three games and lost six. An inexperienced group of boys, under the coaching of Wyatt P. Laughlin, gained valuable experience and learned a lot about football that no doubt will make them a team hard to beat next year. Bobby Gene Mitchell, the 120 pound captain of the team, and Maurice Sears, a junior, were chosen on the Neosho Valley League All-Star Team. Bobby Gene Mitchell, Jack Watson, Lyle Ballard, Clarence Watson, William Hall, Harold Dean Mishler, and Bobby Howard will be lost by grad- uation. Realizing that there is a thrill that comes only from playing on a team in interscholastic competition, and that.in this way much can be learned about playing football that will build stronger boys and better teams in the years to come, Riverton High School scheduled four football games this year for the second string, coached by Herbert S. Madaus and Jack Rockefeller. Q It is expected that some of these boys may be on the first team next year. The following boys played in the B team games: Rex Baumann. BAND One of the best known music organizations in Riverton High School is our band. It has contributed greatly to the music students' knowledge of fine art in music. The members are perfecting their rhythm and intonation, and have learned much of sight reading. The band, this year, had forty-eight students with officers as follows: Max Livingston, president: Lloyd Dean Williams, vice-president: Marilyn Prather, secretary-treasurer. The band has marched at five football games: Weir Homecoming, Baxter Lions' Carnival Parade, the Pittsburg K.S.T.C. Homecoming, the Fort Scott Armistice Day Parade, and the Galena Santa Claus Parade. The band entered the festivals at Oswego, March 11, and the Pittsburg festival, April 1, 1949. They presented their talent at three assembly programs during the season, gave their annual spring concert March 27, 1949, and played at the commencement exercises. Our music department is under the direction of Mr. Raymond A. King. whom the band students wish to thank for his cooperation and effort to make our band a great success. Students publishing the Rambler practice the art of expressing themselves in writing and in transcribing accurately the events of the school year. By means of this paper the parents and patrons of the school are informed of the past and future activities of the school. Copies of the Rambler are kept by the school for reference purposes. Students of the commercial classes write the articles for the Rambler: they are proofread by the English teacher: then the stencil typing and mimeograph- ing is done by the students of the commercial classes. Mr, Herbert S. Madaus. commercial instructor, supervises and instructs the students in the writing and mimeographing of the Rambler.
