It is our football and basketball teamsg it is our band and chorus: it is our class plays, our assemblies, the Rambler, and the Electron. It is also our reputation for good sportsmanship and fair play. For all of us who are graduating, it is the foundation for all our later education and living. Because our school is the strong and important force it is, we dedicate this book to every person in our community whose work and interest has made it possible. HODSON Treasurer The administration of the school has been Well planned and carried out by our school board. To them we extend our deepest thanks, and sincere appreciation for the many seemingly unpaid and thankless hours of work they have so gladly given to the job. To the seniors of 1947, memories of our school activities are very dear. Our four years at Riverton High School have been a most important factor in the development of our personality and character. We are glad that we have these men who continue year after year to give so much of their time and Work to the school. E t Page Eight SUPERINTENDENT LEO A. SANBORN Riverton High School tries to serve as many families as possible to the best of its ability. The administration of a school such as ours is a great responsi- bility. Classroom schedules, bus routes, extra bus trips, ball games, plays, assem- blies, contests, and budget planning are a few of the activities to which the superintendent must give of his time and energy. Mr. Leo A. Sanborn has been our superintendent for the past four years. He has contributed much to our school life through his tireless efforts by spend' ing so much of his time working for a better school. He has been always ready to cooperate with everyone for the benefit of the school. He has done his best to secure materials and equipment for the school during a year when material was scarce, and it took much of his' own time for this difficult task. He surely has done his share to give Riverton the kind of school we have. The school and the community have much for which to thank him. -Seniors of '47 Electron Page Nine BUSSES AND MAINTENANCE i H I l X1 lille ki i . Our three busses have made it possible for many students to attend high school who other- wise might have been deprived of the opportunity. The busses have made four high school routes each day, and in addition have brought the Lowell and Blackjack district grade students to school. They have taken the band on trips to participate in parades at Kansas City, Claremore. Miami, Joplin, Weir, and the Festival at Oswego: and the mixed chorus to sing at Coffeyville, District Teachers' Meeting. Our football and basketball teams have used them for their trips to other schools. Modern transportation facilities such as we have are safer than ever before and add a great deal to the enjoyment of our daily school life. . . ,e A Si g :'t' A 7 i ' 5 L- WMI, V lqqu PRICE KIRK FLOYD POTTER HUGH DoBK1Ns, JR. Our custodians and bus drivers have made possible our pride in a well kept school build- ing, grounds, and busses. They have the responsibility for the care and protection of the entire school plant and its equipment. We give them our thanks not only for their efficient service and their interest but also for their friendship. We know that they are always ready and willing to help us at any time. We take pleasure in dedicating this page to them as an expression of our appreciation. Iilcclmn Page Ten FACULTY WYATT LAUGHLIN Bachelor of Science AGNES C. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY On September 13, 1943, fifty-five freshmen enrolled in Riverton High School to start a course of training that would enable them to take their places as citizens of the community with confidence and ability. The class sponsors were Miss Marjorie Havens and Mr. Joel Livingston. The class officers were Wayne Messenger, President: Donald Mishler, Vice-President: and Scottie May, Secretary-Treasurer. Gladys Miller and James Earl Livingston added a touch of royalty to the class by being selected as Princess and Prince of the Electron. Two one-act plays were presented: The Pampered Darling, a comedy, and Who Murdered Whom? a mystery. A three months' vacation was granted to the students to practice what they had learned during their first year. Forty-nine sophomores came back on September 7, 1944, to resume the course of study. Miss Agnes C. Stairrett and Mr. Wyatt P. Laughlin sponsored the group through the second year. Presiding officers were Mary Hardy as President, Robert Card as Vice-President, and Scottie May as Secretary-Treas- urer. The class play was The Angell Brats. The sophomores were honored by having Jane Marie Williams and Donald Mishler be the first underclassmen to become King and Queen of the Electron. September 3, 1945, found thirty-three juniors ready for the third year of the courses they had undertaken. They selected Miss Agnes C. Stairrett and Mr. Gerald E. Barkley as their sponsors, Mary Jo Wilson, President: Mary Hardy, Vice-President: Wayne Messenger, Secretary: and Jane Marie Williams, Treasurer. The outstanding play of the year was The All American Family. Mary Hardy and Lloyd Bowers were class Princess and Prince. The juniors placed second in the Sweetheart Contest with Scottie May as the Class Sweet- heart. The junior's southern hospitality was shown at the Annual Junior- Senior Banquet in the Auditorium on May 3. Three more months of vacation were taken to prepare for the senior year at R. H. S. On September 2, 1946, thirty-eight seniors came back for their last year as students in Riverton High School. This time the sponsors were Miss Agnes C. Stairrett and Mr. Raymond A. King and the class oflicers were Calvin Win- frey, President: Jane Marie Williams, Vice-President: Mary Hardy, Secretary: and Robert Card, Treasurer. This year the class reflected the training of the previous three years and demonstrated their newly developed initiative and leadership qualities in all activities undertaken by them. Glenna Dell Barr and Bud Garber, their candidates for King and Queen of the Electron won first place. On October 25, Wanda Kuns was crowned Queen of the Grade School Carnival. On February 14, Mary Hardy was crowned Sweetheart Queen of '47. James Earl Livingston, Calvin Winfrey, Ray Anderson and Robert Card demonstrated ability in basketball of which the entire class was proud. Jane Marie Williams and Mary Hardy were the school cheerleaders. Class members feel that they are capable of assuming their places in society and accepting their responsibilities with confidence. The class has been given a good start during the four-year course here in school, and they shall continue to advance and do their best in all that they do. Electron Page Twenty SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY Through a modern device that enables us to look into the future by ear, rather than eye. we have collected these facts of our talented class of 1947. Brace your shoulders as you hear of our undesirable fates. Donald Allen just finished research on his next best seller, The Human Brain. Glenna Dell Barr is presently trying to crowd around Carmen Cavallaro. She passed Iturbi, but decided she liked the former's tempo better. Calvin Winfrey is now co-partner with Digger O-Dell, the friendly undertaker, in a huge undertaking business in Death Valley, California,-lots of business. Eugene Pulley, after hearing the song back in '47 about What Do They Do On a Rainy Night In Rio? decided to find out, and we hear he DID! Margarete Mann is now en route to Dallas in her new super-diesel engine-she is hauling crackers. Robert Watkins has suffered a nervous breakdown while finishing his Master's at Yale. Patsy Griggsby and James Coffman are dancing on Broadway. We hear the team will soon be Coffman 25 Coffman. Madge Roberts is living on a Stony Mountain in the cutest stony house with the nicest husband named Stony. Daniel Sears is head of the United States Federal Bureau of Bookkeeping and Accounting Statistician, Cesquirej, Washington, D. C. Earl Dean Lambert and Max McGuire are partners in a super-deluxe ranch in Wyoming. They specialize in pigs of the H'ammus Alabamus type. Wanda Kuns is scheduled for a lecture over station ICU..C.Me. The lecture will be on, Beasts-Including Men! Troy Coffman is attempting to teach the Capetown African Natives the painful art of roller skating. Bill Garber and his Swingaroos are playing at the Italian Casino in New York City. He has Tommy Dorsey, Harry James and Stan Kenton playing for him--Oh yes, Spike Jones. Gladys Marie Miller is designing clothes in Brooklyn, new fashion center, brief though they may be. Fred Dardenne is on the Boardwalk of Atlantic City, running the classiest little beach pool ever seen. Bud Garber finally ran Senator A. J. Cripe out of business in the Kansas State Senate. Inci- dentally, he is still trying to persuade Glenna Dell to marry him. Jane Marie Williams, now Professor Williams, is teaching speech at Notre Dame. It is purely coincidental UD , but their head coach's name is Ball. Robert Card, nationally known billiard champ will be number one judge to pick Miss America of 1960, and the little woman doesn't like it very well. Bunnie Hardiman's next fight is scheduled with Joe Louis. Bunnie is in very good condition and has Joe worried. Scottie May has a beauty salon in Riverton now and specializes in dying hair-by the way, she is now a dashing brunette! Alan Watson is a traveling salesman and he really gets around-selling helicopters! Wayne Messenger is having trouble with his small son, Rusty Jr., who will simply not behave in school. Maybe he got it from his mother?????? Helen Gibson is being tested by Warner Brothers for the star role in their forthcoming picture, The Class of '47, which is about us, of course! Donald Mishler is singing in the Metropolitan Opera in a quartet, with Fred Allen, Phil Harris and Jimmy Durante. Mish sings monotone, or rather baritone? Ray Anderson is research chemist for the Stunko, Stanko, and Stinko Synthetic Cheese Co. You know he always had a yen for chemistry? Lloyd Bowers, the new speed king of the Indianapolis Memorial Day Classic, set the pace at 130 miles per hour. Erma Myer, the only lady driver, was close at his heels. Mary Jo Wilson is following in the footsteps of Frances E. Willard and is on a tour, lecturing on prohibition! Robert Hite is a trapeze artist for Barnum and Bailey's new six-ring circus. Henry Watkins is chief engineer on the New Southern Belle, and can he roll it! James Southard is Naval Officer: next in rank to Admiral Nimitz! Ruby Jarvis is physical education teacher back at R.H.S. and also helps A'Coach on the line with the football squad! Howard Outt is America's new track star and will appear in the 1961 Olympics! Opal Sizemore and her husband, Harpo, are deep sea fishing in the Mississippi Ocean! Charles Crane and his wife, Irma Lea, will celebrate their 14th wedding anniversary-come Christmas. James Livingston, since his last divorce, which was his seventh, decided to enter Monkhood, next month to escape his natural fate????? Mary Hardy is preparing to go to Atlanta, Ga., to help pick Miss America of 1960. We wonder what she could be doing there????? Names of all characters UD whose names appear in this document are fictitious, and any re- semblance to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental!! !! !! Parsons and Mr. S. J. Neher. Class officers were Carl Hall, President: Norma Lathrop, Vice-Presi- dent, Jearldine Webb, Secretary: and Harold Dean Mishler, Treasurer. Evalee Potter and Bob Mitchell were the class princess and prince. f bThe class was very proud of the two freshmen boys who lettered in oot all. In the music department two girls and two boys played instruments. On April 26, 1946, the freshman class presented a three-act play, Wildcat Willie in the Doghouse. On September 2, 1946, thirty-four sophomores entered Riverton High School for their second year of study and adventure. Sponsors for the year, 1946-47, were Miss Martha Jane Hughes and Mr. Forrest D. Haines. The class officers were Lawerence Whitehead, President: Jearldine Webb, Vice-President: Evalee Potter, Secretary: and Jack. Watson, Treasurer. On September 30, 1946, the sophomores sponsored an all-school-skating party at the Galena Roller Rink. On November 21, 1946, the sophomores had a gymnasium party. Marian Pickering was class Princess and Richard Pennock was class Prince. The sophomores were very active in sports as they had several boys on the football and basketball teams. During the sophomore year three girls and three boys played instruments in the school band. On January 16, 1947, the sophomore class presented a very successful three-act comedy, Let Me Out of Here. Now with two years of training behind them, they hope to make their junior year at R. H. S. a happier and more successful one. Many of them were very confused in the beginning Through all this confusion came Mr. Gerald E. Barkley and Mr. Herbert S. Madaus, the class sponsors, to calm them. They started off on the right foot by electing capable officers: Clifford Hardy, Jr., President: Donald Barr, Vice- President: Bobby Joe Lyerla, Secretary: Chester Bilke, Treasurer. Cheer leaders were Marilyn Prather and Patsy Mast. ' The Electron Princess and Prince chosen for the year were Patricia Benton and Maurice Sears. The first party on the activity list was a Weiner roast held on October 3, 1946. The next event was the electing of candidates for the Carnival Queen. Patty Thatcher was chosen and the freshmen ranked third in the sale of tickets. A Christmas party was held on December 20, 1946. They had a gaily decorated Christmas tree. Presents were exchanged and treats were served by their sponsors. The freshmen nominated Patty Thatcher for the Sweetheart of their class, and they ranked fourth in the contest. The important event every freshman looked forward to was the freshmen play, Watch Out For Spooks, which was presented on March 26, 1947. They take approxi- mately iive weeks to prepare for it. Each student has an opportunity to try out for a part. The sponsors then pick out the cast and the supporting com- mittees such as the stage crew, makeup department, prompters, and ushers. These plays give the students a chance to learn to speak before audiences and help give them poise and balance when speaking before an audience. The money taken in goes into the class activity fund. l For outstanding work done in speech and dramatics during the past twelve years. we dedicate this page to Jane Marie, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo D. She won her iirst declamation contest as a first grade student in 1935, and has continued her line work in dramatics and speech through high school. , Jane has won nine first places, four second places, and three third place awards. While printing these papers all the students had experience typing stencils and some have learned to use the mimeograph machine. The RAMBLER is distributed to the students free of charge and the parents can see what is done inside the school and class room. There are more uses for the library than one can imagine at a moment's thought. They have on the library staff several of the former assistants, and have added several new ones to the staff. This organization is very well operated. All of the students depend upon the librarians for help in reference work.
