Much has been written and said against our age; but throughout time the youth have weathered such criticism, And as each age has matured, the new has replaced the old — and no one has yet toppled the earth from its axis! Our generation has more of good than bad to offer, more of the genuine than of the cheap imitation. We are confidently certain that the solid principles of the majority of us will snow under the sick ideas of the noisy few. We are the younger generation — better informed, we hope, than any preceding younger generation, And we intend to prove it. ‘vag i i 7: “ th he . ae ee, ¥s Sepa esr amen PRE SE pce RENEE ASE yh eee EMRE PIECE EEE ee ee Mr. Bruce Miller, our Superintendent of Schools, is well known on the Poly cam- pus as a true friend of education, doing all that he can to help and improve not only the program at Poly but also throughout the school district. His gen- uine sincerity, priceless sense of humor and his fine ability and insight add up to make Mr.-Miller the strong adminis- trator that he is. Leaders of Our te Li eee a eee Shane epnrinncenvneonenae aged he te chan tenn acne Sen enema The members of the Riverside School Board were never ‘'bored' with their role as downtown administrators. They did their best, despite a tight budget, to make the schools of this city something to be proud of. Faced with situations from beards to extra classes for teachers, 12 the Board solved the daily problems. Our thanks go to, Row 1: Mrs. Evelyn Kendrick (clerk), Mr. Arthur L. Littleworth (president), Mrs. Margaret Heers. Row 2: Dr. Vernon Stern, Mr. B. Rae Sharp (vice-president), and Mr. Bruce Miller (superintendent of schools). Commonly known as 'Ge orge,'’ our Prin- cipal, Mr. George Wrentmore, managed the office with a steady hand. He braved and parried whatever unexpected turns of events came to him. Even when he had to say ''No! ' we all knew he was on our side. He made it his business to get to know as many students as possible and to help and encourage them in as many ways as he could. Here we see him on one of his daily tours of the campus as he makes sure that all is going smoothly. And all is going well, indeed, under the guidance of this Principal. Generation Our Vice-principal, Mr. B. F. Thorson, was always ready to lend a hand— whether it was to help a new student or to carry out his role as Poly's disciplinarian. His job was not always easy—what with senior marches on the library and such—but his friend- liness and understanding were the two dominant features that carried him to popularity in these hallowed halls. His hours spent in long and hard work were not in vain, for with men like him, Poly prospered and became known as THE school in Riverside. “AA PEP VE “LE trong tree The new Dean of Girls this year was Mrs. Anne Rush. Al- though most of us remember her as a counselor from last year, as Dean she has already found an affectionate place in many of our hearts. In the shortest period of time she had things going smoothly and she found her new niche at Poly. The juniors were advised by Mr. Charles Shewman. He informed them of necessary tests and did his very best to see that every- one was doing everything necessary to prepare for col- lege. Mrs. Pauline Whitfield, coun- selor for the ‘‘Zits,'' is here helping Jennie Sanchez look into a home economics major. It was Mrs. Whitfield's job to see that all the sopho- mores started off on the right foot for their next three years at Poly. Perhaps the hardest grade to counsel is the seniors, for they must be informed of tests, scholarships, visitations, and other college information. Mrs. Ruth Wheeler not only did this, but also helped those not going on to college select the best alternative. Setting the horizons for Poly students was Uncle Milty,'' Mr. Milton Tew. As head Dean of Guidance, he was responsible for making sure that everyone received all the information and counseling they re- quired. Norman Richert is checking the latest negatives while Thom Tucker trims pictures for their faculty section. These Faculty Editors also spent many hours working in the darkroom. Copy Editor Suzy Lewis and Business Manager Cindi Smith are going to a fire; they're taking an exciting break from counting money and writing copy. Taking a moment's rest are Juli Hobbs and Joyce Shettel, Ac- tivities Editors. They spent many hours taking pictures and making sure that every club, all award winners, and activities were included in their section. 33 Junior and Sophomore Class Editor Jeff Gaffney just told Karen Saunders, Senior Class Editor, that they have three days to finish their sections. Still, they managed a smile for the camera. The sound of frantic typewriters was commonly heard the night before the Spotlight was supposed to go to print. Somehow it always seemed that someone ended up having one too many stories to write, and one too few hours to do it in. Then there was the problem of getting ads to finance the paper... . Miles on the speedometer and hours spent after school attest to the fact that the going was not always easy. Surmounting it all, the Spotlight turned out a_ bi-weekly paper that informed and entertained us throughout the year. Giving a copy of the Spotlight the once over before its distribution are Bill Beyer, Assistant- Editor and Ed Wilkinson, Editor-in-Chief. With their able supervision they helped make the paper a welcome sight to Polyites. “You mean everything has to be finished today?!! groans Peter Bohr, News Editor. All reporters are concerned with the newspaperman’s ‘five W's'' (although the Spotlight reporters are sometimes inter- ested in things like ‘'Who is going steady with ''what'' and ‘'why.'')
