Sixty-N ine JJ57? lib June, 1969 Price: Class Dues Senior Trip After several boisterous class meetings, many con- ferences with school ad- ministration and a tearful plea to the Chattanooga City School Board, the Se- nior Class of Riverside made plans for a cross- country trip to California, with intermediate stops at points of scenic and his- torical interest along the way. Considerable debate pre- ceded the decision to char- ter a plane for the trip, but the consensus was that air travel provided the cheapest and most eco- nomical form of trans- portation for the cross- country jaunt. Once the preliminary decisions were made, a plane was char- ter and itinerary planned. The itinerary included an overflight of Memphis to the Midsouth Coli- view seum, the site of the 1968 Basketball Tourna- State ment. From Memphis a short flight to St. Louis to visit the Great Arch that crosses the Mississippi River and a tour of the Budweiser canning plant. Then on to Salt Lake City, Utah, to tour the magnificent Mormon Tab- ernacle and to watch the speed runs on the Bonne- ville Salt Flats. From Salt Lake City another flight was made to Los Angeles 'for 3 glorious days of visit- ing U.C.L.A., the Tar Pits, Movie Studios, and beauti- ful downtown Burbank. The final leg included an overflight of the LBJ Ranch and a stop in New Orleans to visit a French Quarter Hotel and boating down the Mississippi. 25 - 5 The group, many of them nervous and excited at the prospect of their first flight, boarded the plane in the waning moments of the dawn. The doors were closed, the engines warmed up and the plane with a slight wobble, taxied onto the runway for takeoff. As the plane taxied down the runway, the slight wobble became more noticeable and one passenger, in a sudden glance out the window, saw a wing slowly cracking and falling to the ground. Another passenger, looking out the op- posite window, saw, to his horror, the engine sputter to a stop and the propeller fall to the ground. With a sudden and agonized shudder, the plane lurched to a stop, with a wing and engine gone. After a convulsive few seconds, the entire plane collapsed into the nearby river, leaving the passengers, still neatly tucked in white seat belts, surveying the damage from a lofty perch stop the wreckage.
