RAM SPIRIT IS DEAD Who cares about Riverside High? Apparently only a very few did, because in a poll taken by the Stu- dent Government which asked whether or not Spirit Week should remain, the majority voted uno. The problem rested in the fact that not enough people cared and only wanted to participate in the few major events such as Home- coming, Sports Night and of course, football, wrestling and basketball, with the end result of a very few people working on the less impor- tant things. The kids that cared were the va- rious officers, their friends, and maybe a few who had alittle bit of spirit. And in that small group, the number of guys could be counted on one hand. For such sports as girls' hockey and basketball, bowling, soccer, tennis, cross country, track, and golf, the attendance was very poor -another example of the lack of the spirit in Riverside. Pep Rallies, held before most major events, seemed to be the only time that the entire student body stood together and showed their school spirit. But was it really SCHOOL spirit or was it CLASS spirit? And after the pep rally, when a class won the spirit stick, did they show their true loyalty to the school by faithfully supporting Riverside activities? Maybe if Spirit Week and Simi- liar activities were given as much publicity as some of the other events in the school, more kids would take part or, just making a lot more students aware that River- side High School doesn't belong to a chosen few, but it belongs to ev- eryone, for it is up to the students toe bring spirit back. RAM SPIRIT IS IILIVE Since 1930 the students of Riverside High School have been known for their enthusiastic sup- port of all school and community activities. Now, as in the past, spirit at RHS was in continuous motion. The student body showed their Christmas spirit by contributing 32,275 to the BURLINGTON COUNTY TIMES Christmas Fund. Sponsored by RAMPAGE, collec- tions were taken up in homerooms. Through the generosity of RHS, many children had a pleasant holi- day. Another instance when Riverside emptied their pockets for a needy person was for a Burlington Town- ship football player, Sam Murphy, who suffered a severe spinal injury. The money raised helped him de- fray hospital expenses. Although Riverside does not of- fer a girls' softball or lacrosse pro- gram in the spring, females were very much involved in Sports Night. Under advisers Mrs. Barbara jordan and Ms. Chris Thomas, the team members practiced long hours per- fecting their activities. Despite the practices, the sore muscles, and the lost voices, both teams had a substantial number of girls turn out. ln 1975 Sports Night had a ban- ner year. Both teams created fan- tastic themes to the topic History of Movies . Maroon and White completed two evenings of com- petition showing great pride and spirit for their teams. lf spirit was dead, would girls give up their time for Sports Night? Even with the end of Spirit Week, The Student Government and the classes remained active. With Homecoming, fund arsers, prom, and graduation, ther: was never a dull moment aroulwi the school. 1 Sure, the demise of Spirit Week was important. Spirit should not be a one week happening. Spirit should begin in September and con- tinue until june. And isn't that what spirit is all about? 20 Adventures
