Many college represenTaTives visiTed Riverside To give sTudenTs inTormaTive glances inTo universiTy liTe and To help Them decide on The career and college besT suiTed To Their desires. While introducing his students to the basic fundamentals o mar, and research papers, Mr. Elmer Roberts takes time o helping hand with an assignment. Recounting the plot ot a recent novel, Cindy McCreery and English tAmerican literature. gram- teacher Miss Barbara Leitzell discuss the story's surprise ending. ut to give iunior Ed Miller a Literature Sparks Creativity in English Under the direction ot Mr. Elmer Rob- erts, the English Department again attempted to provide its students with a broader background in literature and Eng- Iish composition. Freshmen began their year ot English instruction with routine vocabulary tests and book reports. For their literature pro- iect, they read and discussed Charles Dick- ens' Great Expectations. Sophomores started the year with short stories and worked their way through two novels -- Brave New World and Lord of the Flies, which they later saw in the torm ot a tull-length tilm. Near the end ot the year, Shakespeare made his debut with the play Julius Caesar. To Kill a Mocking-bird, a powertul novel, headlined some iunior English classes while others concentrated on poetry and short stories. Many English lll students were required to research and write a term paper. Creative writing was experimented with in the English IV classes. They also did a lot ot literature work including reading Can- terbury Tales. Next year's outlook seemed brighter to some students with the addition ot River- side's new mini English courses. Students would have the opportunity to choose trom approximately 30 ditterent subiects, all rela- ted to English. Some courses would last tor only one semester while others would be year-long.
