Editor's Foreword STUDIES ARE THE FOOD OF YOUTH AND THE CONSOLATION OF AGE: THEY ADORN PROSPERITY AND ARE THE COMFORT AND REFUGE OF ADVERSITY. How many times in the last few years have we read Cicero's words on Riverside's edifice! And yet have we as often thought about their meaning? According to Socrates, men are born with a knowledge of all things, he used, as an example, geometry. At birth, systematic principles and propositions become confused in the mind, disordered, and seemingly forgotten. Questions must be put to the young - leading questions - to stimulate their memories, this is the Socratic method. With this stimulation, their inborn omniscience will be revived. Though science fshould I say current science?l may not wholly agree, still Socrates was right in at least one way. Perhaps man is not born with an infinite number of ideas in his mind, but he has nevertheless a unique capacity to learn quickly all that past ages have learned, he need not re-formulate, or re-invent, each concept in many fields of learning, by himself. Instead, in a relatively brief period he can READ the ideas and discoveries of generations. Yes, READING, and her sister art WRITING, may be called the greatest gifts God has bestowed on man, after life itself. It follows that all the knowledge we have today either is a direct inheritance from previous generations, centuries, or milleniums, or is based on a foundation of the moral, scientific, artistic, and religious concepts of our ancestors. In this book we have tried to show how a few particles of Classic Civilization, the Graeco-Roman culture, influ- ence our lives in high school. And in the years which lie ahead, we must never lose sight of the prime objective, the pursuit of knowledge. If we overemphasize the pursuit of material profit, which is not lasting, we might as well drink the cup of poison hemlock which silenced one of the wisest men in the world, who never ceased to ask, Why? Learning is a name superior to beauty, learning is better than hidden treasure. Learning is a companion on a journey to a strange country, learning is strength inex- haustible. A man in this world without learning is as a beast of the field. - From the Hitopadesa fSanskrit, about A.D. 5005
