VHMQQMQK QA V e a J km Q at .fm :FH . . K 'Q fzsgmxmi Message From Salutatorian DOUGLASBAUER In the Musee de l'Orangerie in Paris is a mural by Claude Monet, Waferlilies, called by many the Sistine Chapel of Impressionism . At first it is an orgy of colors, mostly greens, and then before us take shape myriads of water-plants, afloat on the face ofa stagnant pond - still with little depth, little realism. But as we study parts of the can- vass instead of drinking in all at once, the water begins to wave, assuming the gorgeous colors of the flowers and the tall grass - now white gleams here, now blue shimmers there 1 . . .not any chameleon changes color as often as water does l -and the lilies begin to undulate with the rippling of the water. The pool becomes a mirror reflecting, not an outside world, but a universe of unfathomable inward life. Like Monet's mural, the significance of a high school graduation has two levels of interpretation also. It is customary at commencement exercises to hear graduation called the end of our best years or the finale of youth or the beginning of the great ad- venture. Ah, how romantic! But the cynics who look back on youth as the best years , who find adult life trying because they approached it as an adventure rather than being adequately prepared, are very few. And some think the acquisition of knowledge halts when we leave schoolg they are equally wrong, for as we meet new people, as we find new interests, as we acquire new skills, we shall always be learning. No, high school is only a point in the onward progression of our lives, not a turning-point , not the moment of truth in the bullfight of life as some graduation speaker might say, tongue in cheek.
