It is through the efforts of Miss Ford, Miss Syra- cuse and Mr. Downes that pupils are able to select courses which will help in their chosen professions. f- , 4 Bw Miss Ford's time is spent helping the soph- omore and senior girls. It is she who sees to it that seniors wishing to attend college sub- mit applications promptly and accurately. Miss Syracuse guides freshmen in planning their schedules and helps the juniors decide what to aim for after graduation. Mr. Downes is in charge of all boys and arranges for part time employment for upper classmen who wish experience in the business world. Not only do they aid present students in assessing their capabilities and limitationsg but through visits to neighboring grammar schools, they prepare future students for a smooth transi- tion to high school by advocating a wise selection of courses and an understanding of the added responsibilities which come with growing maturity. 1

Although new in this capacity, he is not a stranger to Riverside. He served here as teacher of social studies from 1934 until 1955 when he left to become assistant principal at school 72.

Retired Teachers Miss Helen Reitz came to Riverside High School as a teacher of mathematics in 1930. During her years at Riverside, Miss Reitz taught such subjects as elementary algebra, intermediate and advanced algebra, trigonom- etry and solid geometry. Students could al- ways count on her additional help with prob- lems not only of an academic but of a per- sonal nature. Miss Reitz left Riverside and the teaching profession in June 1959. Her retirement consists of gardening, travel and a general enjoyment of life. Miss Juvenilia Caseman taught business subjects at Riverside for many years. Among these subjects were typewriting, shorthand, transcription and business arithmetic. Miss Caseman received her Bachelor of Science degree at New York University and her Mas- ters at the University of Buffalo. Very active in her profession, she co-authored a text book with Brewer and Hurlbert. Because of her high standards in teaching, Miss Case- man was among the teachers who wrote the syllabus for the introduction to business course. 1 Miss Helen Tewksbury graduated from Cornell University and taught for many years at Kensington High School before she was appointed to Riverside in September of 1956. She put her broad background into practice in teaching French, Spanish and social studies. During her relatively short stay at Riverside, she gained the admiration of fs students for her ability to parler francais and habla: espa'i1'o1.
