Trains piled high with circus equipment could be seen unloading wh1le children of all ages watched with awe Finally the great moment for the ralslng of the tent would arrive, and then the whole area would be bustling with the sound of music and animals and the smell of pop corn, candy, and hotdogs ln the Big Top people would gasp at the acts in the three great rings ln the main ring would be some death defying alrealist ln the other rings would be the acrobats and Jugglers and clowns People forgot their troubles for a while with the great attraction and excitement of the clrcus So, too, we may adopt the clrcus to school The school can be said to have three rings like the clrcus, ln which the center ring IS the main attraction It constitutes our mam course of study ln school The other two rings symbollze the frlendshlps and the activities we enjoy All these rings prepare us for the future , v 5 I' 4 U11 2? DEDICATION XX Mr Carl S Walz came to Rlverslde from Bennett Hlgh School in February of 1957 to replace Mr Ray W Spear our beloved retiring principal Raised here he is no stranger to our communlty and has a speclal understandlng of our needs and problems 'Vir Walz demonstrates a tremendous enthusiasm and love for young people He has promoted ernment at RlVCl'Sld6 Ably fitted for his work Mr Walz recelved his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Cornell Lniver sity and his 'Vlasters Degree at the University of Buffalo He IS a member of Phi Delta Kappa an educatlonal honor society As principal he is also a member of the National Prlncipal s Organx ZBIIOH Coupled with a dlsannmg sense of humor and understanding leadership he has already won our respect and frlendshlp and we are proud to have dedicated our 1958 Sklpper to him :ii X. Wittlief, one of our outstanding history teachers, has retired after dedicating 27 years of continued service to Riverside High School. As head of the history department at the start of our school in 1930, she organized this course. Dedicated to scholarship, she has graphicly recreated the people, occurrences,and ideas of his- tory. Miss Wittlief graduated from the University of Buffalo and received her masteris degree from Col- umbia University. Future Nurses' Club The Omega Phi Epsilon chapter of the llorizon Club has done its part in the promotion of student and community spirit. By Christmas caroling in many of the community hospitals and helping peo- ple who are in need this spirit is accomplished. Since its beginning in l953, the Future Nurses, Club has introduced many girls to a career in nurs- ing. With a young squad made up chiefly of freshmen and sophomores, Riverside had one of the largest l'nder the supervision of Coach Ronald Moody, squads in the city -- enough boys to put two full Riverside runners placed fifth in the All lligh Race teams in every meet. In the All High meet we won with a total of 120 points. first place in the 200 free style and in the freshmen relay, second in medley relay. Nlr. Downes is their coach.
