MR. RAY W. SPEAR e, the class of l957, dedicate this year's Skipper to Mr. Ray W. Spear, our beloved principal, whose patience, understanding, and wisdom, will be missed upon his retirement this year. And everyone that was in distress, and everyone that was in debt, and everyone that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him, and he became a captain over them. 6

DEDICATION M. Ray W. Spear, born on March 18, 1887, graduated from Brocton High School at the age of sixteen. He attended Fredonia Normal School for one year, and graduated from Syracuse Univer- sity in 1910 where he was a member of Kappa Sigma. At the start of World War l, he attended the Great Lakes Training Station, after which he served on the U.S.S. Flusser. ln 1918 he became an ensign, and in 1920 he earned the ranlc of lieutenant i.g. Later' in World War I, he was attached to the Bureau of Standards, Optics Depart- ment in Washington, D.C. under Nobel prize winner A. A. Michelson. Before becoming our principal, he was the head of the Science Departments of Bennett High School and South Park High School. Between 1930 and 1941 he was the assistant principal of Riverside High School under Mr. Charles Whitney. ln 1932 he earned his M.A. degree from the University of Buffalo. He left us in 1941 to become principal of Bennett High School. He taught in the Evening Session of Canisius College for one year and in a summer session at State Teach- er's College for three years. He returned to us in 1941. Mr. Spear has always been concerned with the personal as well as the intellectual develop- ment of the students at Riverside. The years of aid and advice given to us have helped us develop correct values and mature iudgement. With these values we strive with Mr. Spear to build River- side into the center of the community and its students into the good citizens of tomorrow. We hope to justify his pride in us by keeping always before us the ideals which he has upheld and worked toward. 7
