F UREWORD his yearbook, a record of our past experience, is the introduction to our Book of Life. Here we chronicle all the events, the personalities, the activities, and the'circum- stances which have shaped our lives in the pattern yet to be revealed in the Book of Life. Books have been an integral part of our past exper- iences. Textbooks, references, anthologies, albums, scrap- books, notebooks, directories, all the myriad of fact and fiction, our record would be incomplete without them. They stand as symbols of our lives during these four years. Therefore we unify the experience of these four years in terms of books, a volume of past experiences made up of many chapters, the various facets of our high school career. And now, as seniors, we close this book of our youth with regret, but with anticipation take up the book of our future. As we turn the pages of the new volume, we hope to increase in breadth of understanding and intelligence. While drawing on the book of the past, we shall be forever indebted to those who have helped us fill its pages with truth and experience. Another book has opened, which is the Book of Life. 4 Table I I X Ded1Cat1On Faculty . . Semors Classes ACt1V1tl6S Sports Advertlsements Efxxx ff X,,,,,.. MR. RAY W. SPEAR e, the class of l957, dedicate this year's Skipper to Mr. Ray W. Spear, our beloved principal, whose patience, understanding, and wisdom, will be missed upon his retirement this year. And everyone that was in distress, and everyone that was in debt, and everyone that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him, and he became a captain over them. 6 DEDICATION M. Ray W. Spear, born on March 18, 1887, graduated from Brocton High School at the age of sixteen. He attended Fredonia Normal School for one year, and graduated from Syracuse Univer- sity in 1910 where he was a member of Kappa Sigma. At the start of World War l, he attended the Great Lakes Training Station, after which he served on the U.S.S. Flusser. ln 1918 he became an ensign, and in 1920 he earned the ranlc of lieutenant i.g. Later' in World War I, he was attached to the Bureau of Standards, Optics Depart- ment in Washington, D.C. under Nobel prize winner A. A. Michelson. Before becoming our principal, he was the head of the Science Departments of Bennett High School and South Park High School. Between 1930 and 1941 he was the assistant principal of Riverside High School under Mr. Charles Whitney. ln 1932 he earned his M.A. degree from the University of Buffalo. He left us in 1941 to become principal of Bennett High School. He taught in the Evening Session of Canisius College for one year and in a summer session at State Teach- er's College for three years. He returned to us in 1941. Mr. Spear has always been concerned with the personal as well as the intellectual develop- ment of the students at Riverside. The years of aid and advice given to us have helped us develop correct values and mature iudgement. With these values we strive with Mr. Spear to build River- side into the center of the community and its students into the good citizens of tomorrow. We hope to justify his pride in us by keeping always before us the ideals which he has upheld and worked toward. 7 ii Af W5 -, L xii f ,Q ' ,ifs In 21 .i i xii' A 4 f , + H 1 , A . For, on the breadth and vitality of our knowledge, depends our ability to under- stand and evaluate experiences deeply and truly. Our contact with the accumulation of knowl- edge has been through our teachers, to us, the personification of knowledge and the intermediar- ies of wisdom . Our teachers, then, each adding his knowl- edge to our cumulative experiience as each chapter adds its particular details to the total meaning of a book, have been, for us, a Book of Knowledge. - -f-4-'-uv-vo 1--1'--v' ,Z .,.A.f. w'vv -' Gil-- ' f -.fulfil dgmitv- Mr. Ray W. Masson has been promoted to Assistant Principal of Kensington High School. For two generations of students, his name comes spontaneously to mind when the name of River- side occurs. For Mr. Masson formed the science department and has been with the school through all its 27 years of existence. The impress of his personality, however, is felt most deeply in the minds of those students who have profited by his competent teaching and sagacious wit. 'Lv '- Mr. Louis T. Under her guidance the Office Practice course was introduced. A token ot her continuing loyalty to the school and her concern for its students was the bequest of a sum of money, to provide awards for outstanding Commercial students. Those who knew Miss Thor..as will remember her for her quiet charm, the warmth of her friendship, her sym- pathetic concern tor others, and her patientond courageous spirit. Iss Helen Remington taught for many years in the Buffalo School System. ln the short time she was at Riverside, however, she endeared herself to teachers and students alike. To her knowledge of her subject, she brought an artistic touch which enriched her teaching. But more than this, her influence upon her students stemmed from a deep interest in them as individuals. ln spite of being handicapped by poor health she gave of herself to such a degree that she was an inspira- tion to all who knew her. 21 'Q fo-...,,, MISS REMINGTON Honors Classes wth the opening of school last September came an especially important addition to the curriculums in all city high schools. Recognizing that the intellectually gifted high school student can and should follow a program which is ot a more substantial and enriched fibre than that which is ordinarily pursued by most high school students, Honors Classes were formed. Through the introduction of an Honors Program many stim- ulating and challenging courses are now avail- able for students of outstanding ability. At Riverside Honors Classes were established in English, History, and Mathematics. What is so vivid to us now will be recalled when we turn again these pages which record the roles played by each senior during our four years together. This chapter, then, is the lNho's Who of friendship and of achievement. ff if TI R c X wg. I' 4 Gus' Wes 1 Greetings to the Seniors n my book of golden memories, my association with you at Riverside will always be a bright page. This 1957 Yearbook has as its theme the appropriate subject of books. Books are keys to wisdom's treasure, Books are gates to land of pleasures, Books are paths that upward lead, Books are friends. Come, let us read. flnscription in Reading Room, New England Libraryzj Your textbooks have furnished you with materials of knowledge, but your teachers have helped you to realize that thinking about what you have read makes it yours. Reading makes a full man -- meditation a profound man - discourse a clear man. fffranklin - Poor Kicharcfs Almanaczj Although some of your required books may not appeal to you now, you will return to them and appreciate them as you grow older. One object of seeking an education is not to acquire all knowledge but to know the books where informa- tion may be found. The great ioy that I have found in teaching has been the opportunity to interpret the wisdom found in books to young people. The Bible is a book of faith, and a book of doctrine, and a book of morals, and a book of religion, of special revelation from God, but it is also a book which teaches man his own individual responsibility, his own dignity, and his equality with his fellow man. flliebster - Bunker Hill flddressj The faculty and l bid you Godspeed in going and may your future be crowned with happiness and success. With doubt and dismay you are smitten, You think there's no chance for you, son? Why the best books haven't been written, The best race hasn't been run. fBerLon Braleyj .if egos, 244 l Y Counter Clock Wise: MICHAEL GIDOS, President Class fficers C7 ARLENE PIEKARSKI, Vice-President KENNETH DEWALD, Treasurer RONALD FREDERICK, Boys' Marshall JO AN SZALAY, Girls' Marshall VERA BOEHLER, Secretary Hail and Farewell ln this, the solemn hour so long desired, Arrived so quickly in four fleeting years, Let's not lament the time that has expired But fill our cup brimful with hope, not tears. May we be forever faithful To our family, And fo you, our Alma Mater, As we hail thee. May we always, never ceasing, Loyal be and true, As we leave your treasured portals, Riverside, hail to you l - by Beverly Ann Borom 48 pf.-21 ZW CL SSE5 Register,' 7he Register presents the underclassmen of Riverside. Some of these underclassmen we know wellg others are to us only the faces seen in classes, in the halls, in the cafe- teria, and in assembly. But, as such, they form an essential part of the atmosphere of Riverside. Although we may be only acquaintances, as fellow citizens of the community of Riverside we feel united by a background of common inter- ests and loyalties. These pictures will be a memento of this atmosphere and these loyalties. Helen O I 1 LASS of 1958 o be a junior is indeed wonderful! We are now upper classmen, conscious of new rights and new obligations. This year the iunior class sponsored the Holly Hop on December 2lst, which proved to be a tremendous success. . Many of the talented members of our class participated in the school's annual revue, Happy Times. Our class was also represented on the honor roll and in various types of athletics. Everyone is looking forward to Junior Day and the Junior Prom. This will culminate our junior activities and studies. li it 1, Sltflng: Craig Johnson, Sharon Hardy Standing: Rosalind Bertschi, Jerome Fremont, John Robel, Marilynn Truty 50 Qjfvgfv , .. These students, realizing that music is an integral part of their education, have devoted much of their time to perfecting their natural capacity for music. Our band, under the excellent direction of Mr. Harold Hull, remains one of the best in the city. It adds a rousing note to all our assemblies, open house, and important football games. The annual concert in June gives its members an opportunity to demonstrate their great musical skill. 84 Q 'X .Xj N X Hull's Chorus Row I S. Row 2 M Row 3 S. Row 4 G Row 5 - M. Finley, C. Their purposes are similar in that each club strives to uphold high standards of conduct in their members' own lives and to extend this influence to conditions around them. These high ideals are achieved by the clubs by incorporating both social and service activities in their programs. This year they have collected for various charity drives and given donations to needy organizations and families. The boys and girls serve at dinners at the school and at the Y. M.C.A. Both Hi-Y's enter- tained at the Veterans' Hospital, and the Girls' Hi-Y and Hi-Y-Ettes sang Christmas carols at the Roswell Park Center. As social activities, these clubs have sponsored bus rides, skating parties, dances, and joint meet- ings. At other meetings discussions, speakers, and movies provided educational entertainment. The Boys' Hi-Y again featured two leading iazz groups in a concert for the benefit of the school. Boys' Hi-Y Row 1 - D. Winhie, Sergeant-at-arms, R. Gaye, Chaplain, J. Meday, Vice-President, M. Passage. Football his year Riverside's football team came under the helm of two new coaches. The new head coach was Mr. Turner, our former assistant, his new assistant was Mr. McPartland, both alumni of R.H.S. Mr. Turner and Mr. McPartland had the difficult task of rebuilding, after our fine team of the year before had graduated almost in a body. The team, although green and inexperienced, showed themselves admirably, a credit to their coaches and their school. Riverside lost a heartbreaker to Emerson in the opening game 7-6. The following week R.H.S. was crushed by a very good South Park team 2 'i7. Our third game was the night game at Civic Stadium for the P.A.L. benefit. Riverside came in on the trong end of an l8-6 score. Finally the Frontiers broke into the win column with a l2-6 victory over Lafayette. Ron Fisher scored both touchdowns for us. ln the lost two games Riverside gave two of the top teams in our league real battles only to lose to Grover l9-0 and to McKinley 6-O. Riverside players who received recognition from the Buffalo papers for their fine play were: Norm Kranz, Bob Gesl, Ron Fisher and Gene Adams. With a good part of the team returning next year, we are hoping to win the Harvard Cup for Riverside. Q 106 Let's go Norm! J Thaf's using your head FRONTIERS Crooning for a R A.L. ticket i Drive! Drive! Drive! Basketball iverside's basketball team turned out to be a surprise to its followers. The team lacking in outstanding height and exper- ience finished the season with 6 wins against 5 losses. Riverside was soundly whipped in its first two games but settled down to be a trouble maker for the top teams in the league. The R.H.S. cagers scored two of the biggest upsets of the year by defeating Kensington 70-6l and in the same week knocking off undefeated Seneca 54-45. This season was filled with many close, spine tingling games. The Frontiers lost to up Goes Holland! Grover by 2 points and to Tech by l. For the boys who work very hard at this grueling and little honored sport, it was a great victory. The highly spirited team, was led un- defeated to victory by Sophomore Al Szalay, who won for himself All High honors. ln the annual All High run over the 2.9 mile Delaware Park course, Riverside totaled 70 points to defeat all other schools and secure the Cup. This year under the coaching of Arthur Downes the team, composed almost entirely of lower classmen, gave Riverside rooters two fine victories and many thrill- ing races. Sophomore Ken Kramer won many races in the breastroke and scored our only point in the All High Race. Clelland Ward, John Marvin, Dave Winnie, and Ron Klusek did a grand iob, while a young freshman, Howie Moore, made quite a name for himself. Morale Boosters ne of the most difficult tasks at Riverside High School was to pick the cheerleaders of 1957from the more than 50 students who tried out. Those who were chosen have enlivened not only the games played at home, but also those played at other schools. We tip our hats to the cheerleaders who through their enthusiasm, hard work, and pep have greatly boosted the morale of the team and awakened an answering enthusiasm in the cheers of the students at assembly. Four inch and six inch letters are awarded to freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, respectively at the Girls' Athletic Assembly in May. Badminton, basketball, bowling, volleyball, swimming, ping pong, softball, tennis, and golf are among the sports in which the girls participate. However, the values of participation in this program are far greater than merely receiving an award. New friends are made. Character is developed, and the girls have an opportunity to practice the skills learned in physical education classes. They also have the opportunity to visit other schools and col- leges for play days. This year bowling was by far the most popular sport with over 300 members. Next year the aim is to have 300 girls or more in every sport. Basketball HOT SHOTS - S. Slocum, S. Kessler, B. Giel, J. Pooke, R. Buckinger, D. Ruller. CHAMPS '57 - G. Piccolo, T. Reimann, J.
