Mr. Harry l. Good Completes 34 Years Of Faithful Service In The Buffalo Schools This June Mr. Harry l. Good retires as Deputy Superintendent of Schools after six years of service in this position.This year will mark the completion of histhirty- fourth year as a member of the Buffalo School Department. He has worked hard and come a long way to success since his first days in Bellevue, Ohio, where he ob- tained his early public school education. After working briefly as a private se cretary in the Marion Steam Shovel Co. in Ohio, he began his long career as a peda- gog. In this way he acquired business ex- perience before he received formal busi- ness education. While preparing himself for his career, he received the bachelor of commercial science degree in 1920 from New York University, the Bachelor of Science degree in l927, and the Master of Arts degree in 1931 from the University of Buffalo. Mr. Good has the singular distinc- tion of being the first recipient of the Busi- ness Administration degree from the U. of B. in l927. He was also awarded the Beta Gamma Sigma scholarship key in commerce and the Delta Pi Epsilon graduate key for research in Business Education by New York University. Mr. Good successively headed the Busi- ness Department of the following schools: Rome Eree Academy, Schenectady High School, the Utica Eree Academy, and Hutchinson-Central High School in Buf- falo. He was Supervisor of Business Ed- ucation in Buffalo public schools from 1933 until 1936 when he became the Asso- ciate Superintendent of Schools for Sec- ondary Education, a position he held until 1949. When Dr. Robert T. Bapst retired in November 1949, Mr. Good, because of his fine reputation, was chosen to replace him as Acting Superintendent until September l95O. He has also been a member of the Board of Examiners, Board of Education. lt was in i950 that Mr. Good was appoint- ed as Deputy Superintendent of Schools in Mr. Good initiates Driver Education at R.H.S. High School teachers attending Yale University, as John Hay Fellows. Elementary School Principals' Dinner Buffalo. He was chosen for this job be- cause of his outstanding ability as a teacher and leader. Mr. Good attended the University of Buffalo in two capacities, as a student and as a teacher. As a teacher he lectured in accounting and business education in Millard Fillmore College, U.B., for 25 years, and in the University of Buffalo summer sessions. He was the Associate Professor of Education of the summer ses- sions at the Ohio State University, Colum- bus, Ohio. Under the State Education Department he served as a member of the Regents Question Committee in Business Educa- tion and as Chairman of the State Syllabus Committee in Business Education. Mr. Good is an outstanding member of many worthwhile organizations, among which are: the New York State Teachers Association, the Associated Academic Principals of New York State, the National Education Association, the American Association of School Administrators, and the Eastern Business Teachers Associa- tion of which he was secretary from T932 to i938 and President in i939. To his credit Mr. Good has the co- authorship of many well-known books on business subjects, among them, Busi- ness Record Keeping , Principles of Accounting , Visualized Business Law , and Today's Business Arithme- tic . Because of his ability and talent as a confident leader, many citations and a- wards have been bestowed upon him. The U. of B. awarded him the citation for out- standing service in the field of education. The New York University Alumni Club of Buffalo gave him an award in recognition of his outstandingwork in education. Delta Pi Epsilon elected him as the one honorary member to be chosen in 1947 in recogni- tion of his contributions to business edu- cation and leadership. Mr. Good has served the educational needs of our city with great sincerity and devotion since 1927. He will be missed greatly when he retires after 34 years of service to the Buffalo Education System. Mr. Franke, the driving instructor, took groups of four students out on the road once a week for driving lessons. ln the dual-control car, they put to use their classroom knowledge and learned how to operate a car with safety and de- pendability. These two organizations have produced outstanding singers and musicians. These two groups also have made our special assemblies more enioyable. One of these musical organizations is the band under the able and excellent guidance of Mr. Harold Hull. The band has again completed another successful year. Since the beginning of this school year, it has been playing for our assemblies and for our games. The band also plays our favorite football songs in the fall. In the spring, the band gives a performance in the form ofa concert, an event which everyone eagerly awaits.This year's concert holds the some expectations as the ones in the past. We again congratulate the band on another successful year and hope it continues in the same way in the future. The orchestra is an organization at Riverside which is not so well appreciated as it should be. Under the supervision of Mr. Harold Hull, the orchestra is a living part of the music department. Riverside is one of the few high schools in Buffalo which still has the services of an orchestra. Row 3-Pbul Megyes, James Picone, Norman Future Nurses Club Helps Determine Future Careers n existence three years, the Future Nurses Club has helped many girls decide upon nursing as their career. At our Wednesday afternoon meetings, our group discussed the various aspects of the nursing profes- sion. ln December we toured the medical center at the River Road Chevrolet plant and visited numerous Buffalo hospitals. Our other activities have included visiting Kenmore Senior High School to heard Navy nurse speak on the advantages of nursing in the Armed Forces and viewing a movie on first aid, in Jan- uary. Our Chaplain, Patricia Vence, appeared on the Helen Neville Show on WBEN-TV in November as the representative of our club. Our advisers have been Mrs. Kaminslci and Mrs. Wolin, who have helped us greatly with our club. Through the years we shall try to carry out our purposes, which are to explorevocations, develop our personalities, give community service, extend throughout the school and community a higher standard of Christian character and have good times together indoors and out. Omega was formed at the beginning of this year, therefore, our activities have been few. ln the fu- ture we plan to carry out some of the following activities: field trips, skating parties, hay rides, splash parties, ioint meetings, work at the Red Cross, Goodwill Industries and Community Chest Offices. The highlights of the year are: Annual Council Fire, Candlelight Ball and Regional Conference, which is to be held this year in Washington, D.C.. For the first time in its history, the club was certified with merit. Club membership maintained a steady level of 35 members. The financial status of the club was firm, and contributions were made to the Courier- Express Goodfellows, Buffalo Evening News Crippled Children's Fund, The Lincoln Methodist Church, YMCA Trinidad Building Fund and Riverside High School. The highlight of the year came when the club contracted a well-known Jazz group, The Al Belletto Sextet, which performed in a concert of modern iazz in the RHS auditorium. All profit derived from this con- cert was donated to the school to replace a badly needed sound system in the auditorium. The club participated in many school and community programs as well as in the YMCA-Hi-Y workshop, and Christmas song fest. Several roller skating parties and bus rides were held for both money raising programs and entertainment. Joint meetings were held with Lafayette Girls, Riverside Hi-Y and Hi-Y-ettes. Guest speakers during the year included Mr. Jacque Austin, Mr. Robert Rentz, Mr. Ray Spear, and Rev. Richard Baker. Several meetings were devoted to special programs with movies and o swim at the Y. Outside trips included two trips to Cinerama and Cinerama Holiday, and a tour through the Ford As- sembly Plant. They are the Hi-Y, l'li-Y-ettes, Y-Teen, and the Y-Teenettes. Their common purpose is: To create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community, high standards of Christian character. To achieve their goal, each club has worked on various charity projects. The Hi-Y, Hi-Y-ettes, and the Y-Teenettes sent food baskets to needy families at Christmas and entertained the patients at different hos- pitals. These clubs also contributed their time to community charity drives. A brotherhood choral reading was given by the Y-Teen Club. The Hi-Y Club sent Diane Devald as a representative to the Area Youth and Government Conference in Albany. For pleasure these clubs sponsored skating parties, splash parties, bowling parties, bus rides, dances, and ioint meetings. At other meetings there were movies, speakers, and discussions. Each club meets at a different time and place and has its own adviser. Mrs. David Wilson has given assistance and guidance to Hi-Y for three years. The Hi-Y-ettes wish to express their appreciation to their advisers, the Misses Ellen and Margaret Eagan, Mrs. Lydonia Wright has helped the Y-Teens have a suc- cessful and profitable year. Ot the 65 or more who tried out, these were the finalists: Judy Crispell, captain, Lil- lian Ocskay, co-captain, JoAnn Szalay, Karen Zacha- rias, Jeanne Lee, Patricia Palmeri, William Roth, Ronald Kordasiewicz, and John Miles. Through the enthusiastic and diligent work of these cheerleaders and the co-operative support of the student body, our school has had a successful year. The cheerleaders' skits added humor and enjoy- ment to our assemblies. Their vigor and pep boosted the morale of the team and enlivened the student body on, to many victories. Girls Strive To Win Their Sports Awards Every freshman girl interestedin sports f-5-L. looks forward to her senior year when she will earn the highest honor she can attain in girls' sports, her 500 point Gold Pin. This award symbolizes four years of good, clean, cooperative sportsmanship. X By participating in after-school sports, such as swimming, volleyball, bowling, badminton, and basketball, freshman girls may earn 150 points and are awarded a four inch letter in the Girls' Athletic As- sembly held in May. Sophomore girls can also earn l50 points toward their goal and receive a six inch letter. A iunior, working for her Gold Pin, is required to eam l00 points Because of the many activities ofa senior, it is very diffi- cult to earn the last 100 points The girls who do achieve this Gold Pm for a total of 500 points can be very proud of their achievement The girls sport season opened with volleyball The girls organized their own teams and played six practice games The two teams reaching the finals in the lnterclass competition were the Merrlettes and the Foss ettes The Foss ettes proved to be strong competitors, but the Merrlettes were victo nous and became the Volleyball Champions of 1956 During the mid winter season thrills of excitement have been experienced at Rung s Bowling Academy, where every Tuesday after school the crash of flying bowling pins can be heard Here the gurls learn the technique of bowling and the keeping of scores or lust go to enloy the sport to their arm s capacity Girls gaming a game total of l00 points or more are entitled to have their pictures In the yearbook The high scorers were Stasla Mallast 152 Jessie Grymewskl l44 Judy Hester l43 Carole Pyzynskl l39 and Judy Craspell, l37 During the winter months extra points were given to those who participated in ice skating or roller skating As spring arrived basketball became the popular sport The teams were very evenly matched thus mak ing the games close and exciting Girls developed their individual skills In the sport so that they could rival even the boys team Also during the spring points could be earned by going on hikes under the supervision of Miss Brettle and Mrs Collins The girls hiked to Delaware and Riverside Parks and along the Towpath All the girls who participated in the after school sports program this year would sincerely like to thank Miss Brettle Mrs Stapleton Mrs O Hern, and Mrs Collins for their guidance, leadership and understand ing in helping them achieve their sports awards -If A ,..4w Zfl f f WW, ,,-....,.,,g 'C l25 . . . a I u n u n n . - . . . . . .
