fr' IA SALLE AND THE GRIFFON AngeloC Sczbetta CMural in Front Hallj In the year of 1678 Rene Robert Cavalier de la Salle was com missioned by the Klng of France to build a ship with which to explore the western part of New France On Ianuary 26 l679 the keel of the Griffon the first ship to sail the Great Lakes above the Niagara Falls was laid ln the llttle arm of the Niagara River at La Salle In the sprlng the Grlffon was launched and under the command of Henry de Tonty La Salles lieutenant was brought up the Niagara River and anchored in the quiet water under the shelter of Squaw Island Soon after the arrlvalof La Salle and Father Hennepin, the GrifIon was ready to sail. On August 7, 1678 the sails were set and the little vessel passed up the Llttle Rapid into the open water beyond Lack of any further records suggests that the ship was probably destroyed 1n a storm 4
