EARLY ADMINISTRATIVE SAILING DAYS For two years the 0 communlty of Rlver side watched the S S Rlverslde grow from skeleton Shlp to full masted schooner As It reached comple tlon lt stood rn dry dock overlooking the Nlagara Rlver walt 1ng to be launched On September 8 1930 Shlpmaster Whltney took aboard both offlcers and crew anchor was welghed and the Shlp was em barked on her 25 year CFUISE Experienced teachers acqulred from the other hlgh schools comprised the or1g1nal faculty of Rlverslde Lafayette gave us M1ss Duchesne Miss Dunne M1ss Lange and M1ss Mueller From Hutchlnson came Mr VV'h1tney MISS Altman Miss Bernhoft M1ss Dletrlch M1ss Ford Mr Helenbrook Mr Houck M1ss Kenney MISS Edlth Thomas MISS Wells Miss Wrxson and Mr OConnor the custodian Those Saul ' in from Fosdlck Masten were M1ss Bear Mr Costello Miss Culp M1ss Drullard M1ss Hoyler M1ss Klnsley M1ss O Rellly M1ss Snell Mrs Stapleton East sent us M1ss Coan Mrs Haynes Miss Wall and M1ss Wrttlref Mr Spear M1ss Elllott Mr Masson Miss Goetr M1ss Reltz and MISS Rlppey came to us from Bennett and Miss Alglre from South Park From Techmcal there were M1ss Cary Mr Hofmelster Mrs Holman Miss Mago MISS Carter and Mrs Mltchell M1ss Trachenburg came from School 60 Mr Ebllng and M1ss Payne from School 32 and Mr Gabel from School 8 M1ss Creagh arrlved from Nardln Academy MISS Loney from Olean Mr Hull from the Instrumental Department of the C1tyS schools M1ss CuH from the Buffalo Publlc Llbrary In the November 11 1930 ed1t1on of The Pllot we find this comment To the surprlse of many the school began to functlon smoothly from the very begmnmg Classes were orgamzed quickly work started and even home work was g1ven out promptly to the drsllluslonment of those who thought the first few weeks would be very easy We are now 1n full swmg with a total reglstratlon of 842 448 of which are glrls and 394 boys All have readily found their strlde and are working hard to do credit to them selves and thelr school On the first honor roll of the school were 36 stu dents wlth averages ranging from 94 7 to 90 per cent The five hlghest are these Sylvia Houck 94 7 Dor othy Schuppenhauer 938 Bennett Oelhelm 938 Ruth Archer 934 Carlton Krathwohl 932 The school llbrary when first opened contained about 2 000 volumes Accordmg to the librarian M1ss Ann Cuff Cnow Mrs O Rourkej about 270 pupils used the library dally Durmg the first two weeks of school 796 books had already been drawn from the llbrary By December of the first year of school the faculty had orgamzed several social groups to enjoy such pastimes as contract brldge auctlon bridge mmlature golf bowling and Swlmmlng Abasketball team com posed of Mr Eberle lVIr Helenbrook Mr Houck Mr Masson Mr Savage and Mr Spear challenged the Varsity Five In the first days of the school exhtblt cases ln the halls were devoted to the work of varlous departments such as SCISDCC sewmg mathematics and Engllsh For example Freshmen displayed anthologies and soap and wooden models of shlps Iunlors presented orlgxnal poems and plctures and storles from The Merchant of Venlce In the early part of the second semester H9311 'tn employment service was lnaugurated by Mr Spear then Asslstant Prmctpal to a1d puplls who wlshed to earn money whlle attendlng school By February 1931 38 had already applled for posxtlons through th1s agency Of these 27 had acqulred per manent pos1t1ons and others part tlme lobs News boys for the communlty were obtalned by th1s means were hosts to about 300 teachers and prlnczpals from the Buffalo hlgh schools Tours of the school were arranged coffee was served by the Home Economlcs Department music was furnlshed by the orchestra under the dlrectlon of Mr Hull In the second year of the school mne faculty members were added to the staff They were Miss Blanar Science Mrs Emerson and Mrs Cartwrlght Home Economlcs Mr Dombrowskl Mechanlcal Drawmg Mrs Logan Muslc M1ss Marshall Soclal Sclence Mr Meegan and M1ss Marlon Thomas Busl ness Mrs Macomb Office Secretary The Busmess Department Cthen known as the Commercial De partmentj was added to the currlculum at thls time The courses consisted of Elementary Busmess Com merclal Arithmetic and Typewrltlng Three hundred and fifty students were enrolled under the dlrectlon of two teachers At present of the orlgmal staff of the faculty the followmg celebrate the twenty fifth annlversary wlth us Prmczpal Mr Ray W Spear Art Mr Ray Helenbrook Englzsh Mxss Ruth Cary Miss Mary Connery Miss Mary Creagh Miss Sarah Ford Know Counselorj Home Economzcs Mrs Lois Ludlow Mathematzcs Miss Ida Elliott Miss Harrlette Mago Miss Mildred Mueller Miss Helen Reltz Miss Alene Snell Language Mlss Nan O Rellly Muszc Mr Harold Hull Physzcal Educatzon Mrs Helen Stapleton Scrence Miss Marian Carter Mrs Mane Haynes Mr Louis Masson Social Sczence Miss Evelyn Kmsley Miss Bertha Wlttllef Lzbranan Mrs Anne ORourke Engmeer Mr Frank Savage 9 .
